PICOT) is an acronym that helps researchers and practitioners define aspects of best college essay helpPICOT) is an acronym that helps researchers and practitioners define aspects of a potential study or
investigation.
It stands for:
P- Patient/population/problem.
I – Intervention.
C – Comparison (of potential interventions, typically).
O – Outcome(s).
T- Time frame (if time frame is relevant).
The end goal of applying PIC(T) is to develop a question that can help guide the search for evidence
(Boswell & Cannon, 2015). From this perspective, a PIC(T) question can be a valuable starting point for
nurses who are starting to apply an evidence-based model or EBPs. By taking the time to precisely define
the areas in which the nurse will be looking for evidence, searches become more efficient and effective.
Essentially, by precisely defining the types of evidence within specific areas, the nurse will be more likely
to discover relevant and useful evidence during their search. When applying the PIC(T) approach, the
nurse can isolate the interventions of interest and compare to other existing interventions for the
evidenced impact on the outcome of the concern.
You are encouraged to complete the Vila Health PIC(T) Process activity before you develop the plan
proposal. This activity offers an opportunity to practice working through creating a PIC(T) question
within the context of an issue at a Vila Health facility. These skills will be necessary to complete
Assessment 3 successfully. This is for your own practice and self-assessment and demonstrates your
engagement in the course.

This assignment is worth 350 points (35%) of your final course grade.
Earning the maximum possible score on this assignment will require students to:
Step 1: complete all assigned components, use and cite eight sources, and answer reflection questions (earning up to 100% of the possible points)
Please note that there is no “step 2” (revise and resubmit option) for this assignment. Completion of the “initial submission” using and citing eight sources will earn you up to 100% of the possible points. The Research Paper Revisions and Expanded Reflection is to be submitted and graded as a separate assignment.
To see required components and associated points in the assignment rubric, please view this assignment through the Assignments area of the classroom and scroll to the bottom.
Due Dates
The deadline for submission of this assignment is the end of Week 6 (Tuesday, 11:59 PM Eastern). The Research Paper Revisions and Expanded Reflection is to be submitted and graded as a separate assignment.
Connection to other Course Assignments
The Issue Exploration assignment helped you develop a topic for the Research Paper First Draft.
The Annotated Bibliography assignment helped you identify sources and plan how to use them.
In the Revised Research Paper and Expanded Reflection, you will incorporate feedback on this first draft and reflect on the experience of completing the research paper.
As you complete the tasks required for this assignment, you will be working toward several of the course outcomes:
Use research to write a paper that will inform or persuade an audience (Course outcomes 3 and 4)
Form unified, coherent, and well-supported paragraphs in support of the thesis statement (Course outcome 4)
Select sources, use them to inform and support your writing, and document them in APA style (Course outcomes 2 and 5)
Demonstrate accurate grammar and mechanics in writing (Course outcome 5)
Participate in the process of receiving feedback and revising your writing (Course outcome 3)
Step 1: Submission (earn up to 100% of the possible points for the assignment)
Your submission should include all of the following components:
Sources
To earn the maximum possible points on this assignment, use and cite at least eight sources.
At least three of these must be from scholarly journals, and all sources should be selected based on reliability, currency, and level of information/analysis. The UMGC library will be very useful in helping you find appropriate sources. You can, but do not have to, include all of the sources from your annotated bibliography.
Note that it is possible to earn a B on this assignment by using only six sources, including three scholarly journal articles. To earn an A will require an additional two sources.
Consider the following in incorporating your sources:
Sources are meant to help you build your argument, not to define the paper’s organization. Therefore, it is usually not helpful to have an entire paragraph focused on a single source or to focus on a source in a paragraph’s topic sentence.
To weave sources into your own writing, avoid dropping quotes into your paper without an introduction or transition in your own words. An example of a transition into a quote is underlined in the following: This idea is corroborated by Snyder (2019) who explains that “community-based interventions have to be adequately funded” (p. 10).
It may also be helpful to follow a quote with a comment on its significance to the paper’s ideas.
Content and Organization
This paper is the culmination of your research project, in which you are examining a current issue or event in the news from the perspective of your field of study. Before drafting your paper, you will have chosen a topic, developed a research question, and identified several potential sources in an annotated bibliography. You should write on the same topic for this paper, unless your professor has asked you to make changes to your topic.
As you write your paper, be sure to include the following:
an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement. The introduction is meant to engage your readers and orient them to the topic, and the thesis statement should clearly state your position or central claim to be supported in the body of your paper.
any definition of terms or background information that your reader is likely to need to understand your paper
focused body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences and use transitions as needed. This is where you will support the thesis using arguments and evidence. Use the sentence outline you developed in class to guide you.
a concluding paragraph that reiterates the thesis, summarizes key points of the paper, and leaves the reader with the “So what?”
an APA reference list that includes all of the sources cited in the text of the paper, in alphabetical order
Research is a key element of this paper. Take care to support your claims with research throughout the paper. Include APA in-text citations whenever you use sources, whether through quote, paraphrase, or summary.
Language Choices
As a writer, you are free to decide how you use language, keeping the following in mind:
style: your language choices should result in a consistent writing style that is purposeful and aligned with your goals
readability: your language choices should ensure that your ideas are clear and easy to follow
When composing your assignment, think about the conventions for academic writing, including:
punctuation: this includes things such as recommended use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
Take time to review your language choices after you’ve drafted your assignment. Think about your goals for the style of this writing and your own writing habits (like using “text-speak,” omitting capitalization, or writing sentence fragments). Revise as necessary to accomplish your style and readability goals.
Reading your writing aloud is a helpful technique when reviewing your language choices for style and readability.
This paper calls for an academic style, which most frequently involves third person point of view. Second person “you” is seldom used in academic writing. First person “I” is best restricted to discussions of your personal experience or involvement with the research topic or your role of as the researcher. Not all research papers will will include these discussions. First person statements of opinion (“I believe,” “I would say,” etc.) may weaken your claims. Instead, state your position without these phrases, and provide evidence.
Length and Format
This paper should be at least 2000 words, including references.
Incorporate these elements of APA style:
Use one-inch margins.
Double space.
Use a consistent, easy-to-read font between 10-point and 12-point.
Include a title page with the title of your paper, your name, and the name of your school.
Reflection Questions
The reflection questions are to be answered separately. Post these in the “comments” box when submitting your assignment. Be sure to address all four questions.
Aside from simply meeting the requirements, what were your personal goals for this assignment? State at least two goals and answer in a short paragraph of at least three sentences. Goals may be of any sort: specific areas of writing, organization, time management, etc.
When reviewing your language choices, what choices did you make to approach your goals for staying within or moving beyond conventions for academic writing? Please be specific and answer in a short paragraph of at least three sentences. Examples of specific language choices are writing only in third person, using discipline-specific vocabulary, writing to reflect one’s own dialect, etc.

when homeless.
Introduction
Nurses in all professional roles work to
effect positive patient outcomes and improve organizational
processes.
Professional nurses are leaders in problem identification, planning, and
strategy
implementation—skills that directly affect patient care or
organizational effectiveness.
Too often, change agents jump to a conclusion
that an intervention will promote the envisioned
improvement. Instead, the
ideal approach is to determine which interventions are appropriate, based on an
assessment and review of credible evidence. Interventions could be
patient-facing or involve a change in policy and process. In this assessment,
you’ll identify and make the case for your practicum focus area, then explore
it in depth from a leadership, collaboration, communication, change
management,
and policy perspective.
This assessment lays the foundation for the
work that will carry you through your capstone
experience and guide the
practicum hours needed to complete the work in this course. In addition, it
will enable you to do the following:
Develop a problem statement
for a patient, family, or population that’s relevant to your practice.
Begin building a body of
evidence that will inform your approach to your practicum.
Focus on the influence of
leadership, collaboration, communication, change management, and policy on
the problem.
Preparation
In this assessment, you’ll assess the patient,
family, or population health problem that will be the
focus of your capstone
project. Plan to spend approximately 2 hours working with a patient, family, or
group of your choice to explore the problem from a leadership, collaboration,
communication, change management, and policy perspective. During this time, you
may also choose to consult with subject
matter and industry experts about the
problem (for example, directors of quality or patient safety,
nurse
managers/directors, physicians, and epidemiologists).
To prepare for the assessment, complete the
following:
Identify the patient,
family, or group you want to work with during your practicum The patient you select can be a friend or a family member. You’ll work with this
patient, family, or group throughout your capstone project, focusing on a
specific health care problem.
Begin surveying the
scholarly and professional literature to establish your evidence and research base, inform your assessment, and meet scholarly expectations for
supporting evidence.
In addition, you may wish to complete the
following:
Review the assessment
instructions and scoring guide to ensure that you understand the work
you’ll be asked to complete and how it will be assessed.
Review the Practicum Focus Sheet: Assessment 1 [PDF], which
provides guidance for conducting this portion of your practicum.
Instructions
Complete this assessment in two parts.
Part 1
Define the patient, family, or population
health problem that will be the focus of your capstone project. Assess the

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 9 in your textbook.
In this paper, you get to demonstrate the skills you have learned in this class as you strive to manifest the ability to arrive at conclusions based upon a fair-minded analysis of the best reasoning on both sides of issues. This includes presenting and evaluating the best arguments on each side, followed by a presentation of your own argument for your thesis. You will go on to support this argument using evidence from scholarly sources and addressing the strongest objection to it. Integrate the work you did in the Week 3 Scholarly Arguments on Both Sides assignment.
For an example of how to complete this paper, take a look at the Week Five Example Paper
Download Week Five Example Paper
.
Your paper should include the following elements:
Introduction (approximately 150 words)
Introduce readers to your topic.
Include a brief preview of what you will accomplish in this paper.
First Argument (approximately 200 words)
Present the best argument on one side of the issue.
Put your argument in standard form, with the premises listed one by one above the conclusion.
You may put the premises into your own words, or you may quote a source. If you use words directly from a source, then they must occur within quotation marks (in addition to the citation).
This argument can be based on the scholarly sources you analyzed in Week 3, but it can also include evidence from other sources you have found (in addition to your own improvements). It is to represent what you take to be the best argument you have found for this side of the issue.
Cite sources that support your premises. Refer to the Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper
(Links to an external site.)
resource to structure the citations.
Opposing Argument (approximately 200 words)
Present the best argument on the other side of the issue (same as above, but on the opposite side).
Develop your argument in standard form, with sources cited to support your statements (as above).
Analysis of the Arguments (approximately 300 words)
Evaluate the quality of the two arguments given above.
This can include addressing whether key premises are true (or well supported) and how strongly the conclusion logically follows from them.
Explain any fallacies, biases, or rhetorical tricks committed by any of them.
Analyze why one is stronger than the other.
Justify your position not with opinion but with your analysis of the quality of the arguments.
Presentation of your own argument on the topic (approximately 200 words)
Construct your own argument on the topic.
Present your argument in standard form.
Of course, this argument will be influenced and supported by the research you have done, but this is to be your own argument in your own words supporting your thesis.
For any premises that are based on research, include a citation of the relevant source (even though the premise is in your own words).
Addressing an objection to your argument (approximately 300 words)
Present what you would consider to be the best possible objection to your argument (you may address more than one if you prefer).
Present what you would take to be the best reply to this objection and defense of your argument.
Cite a scholarly source in this section as well (either in your presentation of the objection or in your response to it).
Conclusion (approximately 150 words)
Summarize the evidence for all points of view.
Evaluate how controversial topics should be addressed by critical thinkers

Article Critiques
by Susan Katz and Jennie Skerl
When college professors ask you to write a critique of a text, they usually expect you to analyze
and evaluate, not just summarize. A summary merely reports what the text said; that is, it
answers only the question, What did the author say? A critique, on the other hand, analyzes,
interprets, and evaluates the text, answering the questions how? why? and how well? A critique
does not necessarily have to criticize the piece in a negative sense. Your reaction to the text may
be largely positive, negative, or a combination of the two. It is important to explain why you
respond to the text in a certain way.

Step 1. Analyze the text
As you read the book or article you plan to critique, the following questions will help you
analyze the text:
 What is the author’s main point?
 What is the author’s purpose?
 Who is the author’s intended audience?
 What arguments does the author present to support the arguments?
 What are the author’s underlying assumptions or biases?
You may find it useful to make notes about the text based on these questions as you read.
Step 2. Evaluate the text
After you have read the text, you can begin to evaluate the author’s ideas. The following
questions provide some ideas to help you evaluate the text:
 Is the argument logical?
 Is the text well-organized, clear, and easy to read?
 Are the author’s facts accurate?
 Have important terms been clearly defined?
 Is there sufficient evidence for the arguments?
 Do the arguments support the main point?
 Is the text appropriate for the intended audience?
 Does the text present and refute opposing points of view?
 Are there any words or sentences that evoke a strong response from you? What are those
words or sentences? What is your reaction?
 What is the origin of your reaction to this topic? When or where did you first learn about
it? Can you think of people, articles, or discussions that have influenced your views?
How might these be compared or contrasted to this text?
 What questions or observations does this article suggest? That is, what does the article
make you think about?
Step 3. Plan and write your critique
Write your critique in standard APA form. It is generally best not to follow the author’s
organization when organizing your analysis, since this approach lends itself to summary rather
than analysis. Begin with an introduction that defines the subject of your critique and your point
of view. Defend your point of view by raising specific issues or aspects of the argument.
Conclude your critique by summarizing your argument and re-emphasizing your opinion.
 You will first need to identify and explain the author’s ideas. Include specific passages
that support your description of the author’s point of view.
 Offer your own opinion. Explain what you think about the argument. Describe several
points with which you agree or disagree.
 For each of the points you mention, include specific passages from the text (you may
summarize, quote, or paraphrase) that provide evidence for your point of view.
 Explain how the passages support your opinion.

Paper is based on aspects of Medieval Spain’s histo argumentative essay helpPlease read before bidding.
Paper is based on aspects of Medieval Spain’s history of interfaith cooperation and conflict, with a specific focus on what we can learn about pluralism, ethics and leadership that is applicable to life today. Parts of Spain to be included are: Toledo, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, and Madrid only.
Increasingly, polarization is acknowledged as a significant and dangerous problem in the United States and around the world. In an age of filter bubbles and echo chambers, how can we move towards a more pluralistic society where there is a greater focus on mutual understanding, respect and the common good? During the medieval era, part of what is now Spain was ruled by an Islamic civilization called Al-Andalus. Muslims, Christians and Jews collaborated and lived together relatively peacefully for hundreds of years. However, this history is also contested. What can today’s students learn from the history of this region of Spain? Using an interdisciplinary approach, this faculty-led study abroad course will help prepare students to be more effective, ethical leaders by introducing them to historical examples of conflict, cooperation and collaboration across difference in Spain. We will examine the history of this region with a specific focus on what we can learn about ethics and leadership across difference that is applicable to students and life today. There will be a large focus on pluralism and the psychology of human behavior. This is a highly interactive learning community that requires students to reflect on their own worldview, and to actively participate. This traveling learning community will connect formal knowledge with real world experiences. Participants will return better prepared to unite communities across difference and have a positive and powerful impact on the Mason community, and beyond.
Ethics and leadership across difference will be explored from a wide range of disciplines and contexts. Students and the course facilitator(s) will work together to explore questions such as: How are values and ethics established in individuals, groups and organizations with different backgrounds and worldviews? What are the responsibilities of leaders to establish ethical climates in their organizations and communities? What are the responsibilities of followers and bystanders? Are there, or should there be, universal values and ethical principles in leadership? How does culture influence ethics and leadership? What are some helpful approaches to leading across difference in an ethical manner?
Please note: This is designed to help you better understand the factors that affect ethics and leadership across difference and to promote reflection and dialogue in order to help you think about ethics, leadership and pluralism in even deeper, more complex ways. We will not come to consensus on how to act in all situations. The focus is on pluralism and “ethical fitness” that we each can develop over time. As we develop this ethical fitness, and consistently focus on it over time, we can be more prepared to lead across differences. Learning to lead ethically across difference is a lifelong process.

A physician adopts a problem-solving strategy to concentrate on the patient’s flaw or malfunction. The medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing provide the basis for identifying and treating a particular condition. The medical model focuses on the physical and biological characteristics of specific illnesses and ailments (Leng, 2013). The way doctors think is typically referred to as the “medical model.”
A problem in nursing practice examines the clinical judgment of a patient, a family, or a community, as well as how they react to real or imagined health issues they are exposed to. Therefore, a nursing practice problem gives nurses a starting point to choose suitable nursing treatments to accomplish a specific goal and for which a nurse is responsible (Leeand Mills, 2010). Acute discomfort, nausea, constipation, a lack of self-care, risk harm, and other issues fall under this category. For instance, a broad and more comprehensive awareness of the effects of a condition on a specific patient or family is provided by the complementary nursing practice problems of reduced verbal communication, disrupted family processes, the risk for falls, & helplessness. Additionally, they support directing nursing treatments to
Doctors in the West used the conventional method of disease diagnosis and treatment since the time of Pasteur and Koch. An illness or medical condition is the focus of a medical model. The doctor adopts a problem-solving methodology to concentrate on the patient’s flaw or malfunction. Although the nursing model is not defined, specific practice models and theories highlight the more comprehensive approach to disease that nursing takes. A nursing model focuses on how people react to current or projected health issues and life events. It examines a patient’s behavior in response to actual or possible health issues they are exposed to and the clinical judgment about the patient as a person, family, or community. For instance, the patient’s foot was broken. The doctor may prescribe painkillers, but the nurse may also recommend more ace wraps, a visiting nurse, a decent babysitter, etc. Although the medical paradigm would classify this as “soft science,” who will improve your actual quality of life, not simply your foot

Discussion topic: Whites swim in racial preference
Given recent civil unrest and protests relating to the Black Lives Matter movement, and the on-going racial reckoning in our society, discussions of white privilege seem all the more important. Before answering the questions below, please read the short article by anti-racism advocate Tim Wise: Whites swim in racial preference
http://www.math.buffalo.edu/~sww/circle/racial.preference.html.
Although this was published some years ago, it is still relevant today.
Wise presents many pieces of evidence to support his claim that whites are — and always have been — the major recipients of racial preferences. Name 2 of them and briefly state how this provided whites with a leg-up.
Wise also suggests whites are often unaware of white privilege in our culture. He uses the analogy of fish in water. What does he mean by this analogy?
Finally, do you think most white people in the U.S. are able or unable to see the unearned privilege that is tied to their skin color? Why or why not, and what evidence (or example) is your reasoning based on?
NOTE: Some students find the short essay “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” by Peggy McIntosh, useful in getting their heads around the notion of “white privilege.” Feel free to engage this as well if you would like to.
Finally, the following is just for your information, not necessarily for use in answering the above question: The U. of M. system of admissions that is described in this article was altered as a result of a Supreme Court case (Gratz v Bollinger). For details see this site. It was further affected in 2006 when voters in the state of Michigan passed a ballot initiative that changed the state constitution to ban affirmative action on the basis of race or gender in the areas of public education, employment or government contracting.
