Art Vs Government And Battle Field Argumentative Essay Help Online

Art Vs GovernmentJoin now to read essay Art Vs GovernmentThe forces of art and the forces of power, ever since their existence, have always clashed with each other. The battle field, where the fight for artistic exposure is suppressed by the powers of censorship, is not just one field, but a massive number of fields. Fields like painting, advertising, food, media, and even gaming are being massacred by the weapons of censorship. Now, is it wrong to hold back art, or is it wrong to let it run free? It all depends on how the art is presented. There are good sides and bad sides to art. In the infinite battles of the war of art, the outcome of the war has already been decided, even before any battles have taken place: a stalemate.
Gavin, I have decided to start a community site to organize and disseminate art that I’ve long supported, and I’m calling it ‘Art Vs GovernmentJoin’. Please help, since I cannot tell you what this site or my community of art enthusiasts means for the community. I love your work, but I am also trying to work my way into more than your articles.

I know you’ve been running this site, and you’ve written a bunch of nice posts. But that’s just what I’m asking you to do! Please, tell me where you are, and we can start organizing something that you know will be meaningful and meaningful. In this spirit, we can organize this movement.

We are asking that you follow our lead and help us. We can organize a discussion thread to discuss the subject, or we can organize a group of volunteers to help organize the first, and most likely the last two chapters, at the Art Vs GovernmentJoin workshop which, like we have written already, will follow the same process. If you’re interested in joining us in this project, please check out our Meetup page.

There are certain things that should be censored in any country. Things like eroticism, violence, negative influence, and plain scary stuff that can make people cry. The government should have the power to protect. Since the government is made to govern the people, it should be logical to say that the government has the right to do anything in their power to protect their people. Without the people, there is no government. With the protection the government provides, it can shape the society the people live in. young minds will be corrupt and turn precocious with the mind of a sexually violent person without the proper guidelines to show them the right path. Not everything should be censored, but inappropriate things that can damage an innocent society. Examples like decapitated limbs for a movie poster, erotic videos, and gory games should be controlled. The world today is already corrupted. Children as young as ten years already know what sex organs can do, what they feel like, and how it should be used before the government has a chance to teach them. With that knowledge, children will turn evil, pulling down innocent children into their ranks with the greatest weapon they have in their arsenal: peer pressure. Peer pressure is very lethal. Its like a disease that spreads like wild fire. Censoring morally wrong material can stop all this madness. The government can have a better functioning society where violence is low and tax dollars arent wasted. It is not just the government that should be doing this. It should be the guardians as well. Guardians have a duty to protect their children. Not just their children, but the children of whoever they meet. Guardians play the role of a role model for the young ones so they can grow to be good people. It starts a chain reaction that can only be stopped by censorship. So censorship is not all that bad.

On the contrary on the censoring of the arts, it is also bad to hide what is needed to be preached. Realistic images can teach lessons on life, stuff that just looks cool and inspires new ideas, and people can show

Clinical Research Past and Present

Tina Ross-Cruz

Abstract

Research disasters have been noted for years. In the early years, the reasons for these disasters was that there were no regulations governing the protection of human beings; and there were no guidelines for safety and efficacy of a new medication or treatment prior to the use in humans. Now regulations and guidelines are in effect for the protection of human subjects. These guidelines and regulations also protect the researchers. These regulations have enabled the researchers to further scientific knowledge of diseases and the etiology, along with the bioavailability, toxicology, and pharmacology of the new medication or treatment. Even with all of these regulations and guidelines, still researchers perform unethical research on human subjects. This could be attributed to several factors: One is the financial gain; second, is the need to be the best; and third, the professional and academic pressure put on the researchers. Although there are these pressures, the research subject should still be aware of the research at hand and the qualifications of the researchers.

Clinical Research Past and Present

Imagine living in the early twentieth century and suffering from chronic headaches. A physician suggests trying something different, a medication not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for chronic headaches. The medication is taken at the physicians request and the result is death. This kind of pre-clinical research actually did happen and still does today. There are regulations today that govern clinical research in humans because of this type of disregard for human life. These regulations enable healthcare providers to enhance scientific development and to minimize risks involved with participation in a clinical research trial.

The need for current and accurate information concerning the proper conduct of clinical research has never been greater than it is today. Researchers are aware of the vulnerability of the data supporting research trials today; this is why properly conducted randomized clinical trials have profound effects on the advancement of medicine. Research involving human patients can be performed in unethical manners. More importantly, if it is not conducted under stringent standards there is a potential for criminal deviations. That is why there is a need for the potential research subject to select ethical sites to ensure their regard for safety and moral conduct.

History of Clinical Research

In the year 1780, Benjamin Franklin said, (Shryock-1947)

“The rapid true science now makes occasion, my regretting sometimes that I was born so soon. It is impossible to imagine the height to which maybe carried, in a thousand years, the power of man over matter all diseases maybe prevented or cured, not even expecting even that of old age, and our lives lengthened at pleasure beyond the

anti-diluvium standard.”

The history of medical science in the United States falls into four epochs; the first era began early in the 18th century and ended approximately in 1820. The second era falls in the year 1820 and ended around 1860; the third era started in 1860 and ended around 1895. Finally, the last era began in 1895 and has proceeded to the present era. During this time, American medicine surpassed a long persisting colonial status and emerged on a level of cultural independence.

Physicians have for years attempted to understand diseases, to use the knowledge to cure and relieve suffering in the ill. There is a sense of the term “experimentation” in which it would be true to say that physicians have been experimenting on their patients since a time beyond memory, record or knowledge. From earliest times when a patient presented with unusual symptoms or a condition that failed to response to usual treatment, doctors have experimented with new therapies. “This approach to medical knowledge, trying out new treatments and procedures and then carefully observing the results, was the dominant method in Western medical science until well into the present century” (Schafer, Vol. 307, P 719-724). Therapies were not based on observational studies but on the authority of tradition. For instance, take the great cough medicine; people were sold the recipe of whiskey, honey, and lemon to quiet the cough. Recipes similar to these were sold to the public without any evidence of safety and efficacy. The products that were non-effective; most of them were 99% water. In the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes, M.D., “If all of these patent medications were thrown into the ocean it would be good for the population, but bad for the fish in the ocean” (Parasandola, 1999).

“The history of medicine is abundantly endowed with therapies that were widely used and then were shown ineffective or deadly” (Passamani, 1991). For instance, radiation therapy was used on patients between 1940 and 1968 for the treatment of acne. The radiation treatment was found later to lead to a high incidence of thyroid cancer in the treated patients.

The thalidomide disaster was another treatment found to be toxic. Thalidomide was used in pregnant women for morning sickness in the early 1950s. This led to birth defects in hundreds of babies. Because of the birth defects in infants, the drug was banned from use in the United States. In 1906 a law was passed to set standards for drug purity and quality through the United States Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary; however, there still was not a law regulating the safety profile of drugs at this time.

Disasters of Clinical Research

“Research was not as it is today” (Code of Federal Regulations, 1999). For instance, a study that was performed in 1937 involved the death of 107 Americans, most of whom were children. The deaths occurred after taking Elixir Sulfanilamide, a medicine used to treat bacterial infections. The drug Sulfanilamide itself was safe, but the solvent dethylene glycol added made the elixir deadly. The incident received major media coverage, which led to the 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. “The most important outcome of the disaster was that new drugs had to be tested and proven safe before marketing” (Parascandola, 1999).

Another disaster of medical research occurred during World War II. The public views doctors as some of the most respected and intelligent individuals in our society. So how can doctors be transformed from healers

Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-FrequencyEssay Preview: Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-FrequencyReport this essayExplain the difference between:Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-frequency (DTMF)Phone key pads are actually a somewhat recent invention. Until the 1970s, the rotary dial was in widespread use. Numbers were dialed by turning and then releasing a disk on the front of the phone. When the disk was released, a spring mechanism inside the phone returned the disk to its original position while generating a certain number of pulses at the proper rate.

Since then, rotary dial phones have largely been replaced by touch dial phones which have calculator-like keypads. To dial a number, buttons are pressed on the keypad and the phone then sends the corresponding DTMF tones to the phone company. DTFM tones are a series of sounds, which consist of two “pure” tones and convey the phone number to the telephone network. They consist of two pure tones. The sounds are sent to the phone company the same way the phone conversation would be.

Wide Area Telecommunications Service (WATS) and leased linesWATS (wide-area telephone service) is a specialized form of fixed-rate long-distance telecommunication service. WATS lines are commonly used by businesses and government agencies. It seems that WATS is basically a toll service for dial-type telecommunications between a given customer station and stations within specific geographic rate areas using a single access line between the customer location and the serving central office. Each access line can be configured for either outward (OUT-WATS) or inward (IN-WATS) service, or both.

With most WATS lines, calling-zone restrictions apply. For example, it might not be possible to make or accept WATS calls to or from locations within the state where the subscriber is located, or to or from locations outside the country where the subscriber is located. In other words, with “outward WATS” it is possible to make an unlimited number of long distance calls (toll calls), for a fixed price, within pre-determined time and distance constraints. With “inward WATS,” subscribers are issued a toll-free telephone number, typically beginning with a designated toll-free area code such as “800” or “888,” and anyone may call that number without having to pay a toll charge. The recipient pays for the calls at a flat rate or other predetermined rate. “Inward WATS” service is available with Automatic Number Identification, a form of super-Caller ID.

Conversely, a leased line connects two locations for private voice and/or data telecommunication service. It is not a dedicated cable, but actually a reserved circuit between two points. Leased lines can span short or long distances. They maintain a single open circuit at all times, as opposed to traditional telephone services that reuse the same lines for many different conversations through the process of “switching.” Leased lines are most commonly used by businesses to connect branch offices, because these lines guarantee bandwidth for network traffic.

Private Branch eXchange (PBX) and CentrexA PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is a telephone switch owned by a company or organization. These organizations purchase PBXs to reduce the total number of telephone lines they need to lease from the telephone company. Without a PBX, a company will need to lease one telephone line for every employee with a telephone. With a PBX system, the company only needs to lease as many lines from the telephone company as the maximum number of employees that will be making outside calls at one time. In a PBX system, every telephone is wired to the PBX. When an employee picks up the telephone and dials the outside access code (usually 9), the PBX connects the employee to an outside line.

On the other hand, Centrex (central office exchange service) is a service from local telephone companies in the United States in which phone facilities at the phone companys central (local) office are offered to business users so that they dont need to purchase their own facilities. The Centrex service effectively partitions part of its own centralized capabilities among its business customers. The customer is spared the expense of having to keep up with fast-moving technology changes, for example, having to continually update their private branch exchange infrastructure. It appears to me that for the most part Centrex has now replaced the private branch exchange.

The Four Functions of ManagementEssay title: The Four Functions of ManagementThe Four Functions of ManagementCarrying out a successful business requires understanding and practice of the four functions of management. The functions of management commonly include planning, organization, leadership and control (Bateman and Snell, 2004). In every management system, with different roles and functions, makes every managerial role uniquely different. The continuously changing world that we exist in today requires managers to concentrate on the business running at its peak level. Running on the four functions of management will enable a business to run efficiently (Bateman and Snell, 2004). The four functions of management are a great method to stand by for everyday life, not only the business world. Integrating the functions of management should become a subconscious routine followed out everyday that every employee is aware of.

The first management function is planning. Planning consists of establishing tasks that need to be completed as well as awareness of what sources are required to achieve a successful day. Each manager in every business completes projects, whether small or large. Accordingly, the common ending result and goal are successful completion of the project (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Planning is easily understood as setting the course for the completion of a task or project. In many situations, the serving purpose for planning is not fully understood until the end of the project, speaking from experience. Planning is possibly the most important function in management and tracks out a course from beginning to end for a task or project. In a computer business of repairs, selling systems and continuously running service calls, planning becomes a very important step in the day that must be conducted very first. Setting goals in-house to achieve come after deciding who is going to run which mobile call. Planning helps each and every one of us decide what needs to be accomplished during the workday (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Setting goals and expectations for the day helps eliminate tasks that are not important to complete the one’s that are most important. In completing the planning for the day we move on to the next phase.

Organizing is the second function that includes the assignment of tasks to individuals. Each type of business manager for each type of business undoubtedly each have different tasks to carry out, however, the basic process of organizing is the same (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Time management, prioritizing and analyzing situations clearly is a very important task for managers to be able to carry out. In the computer business, delegating who is going to stay in-house and do repairs for the day and build computers is very important to distinguish from those that are going to go out for the day and run a certain route of mobile calls. Organizing the plans for the day is a critical step that is about communication in an effort to assure the same task does not get completed twice. Not being completely organized for the day is starting the day off on the wrong foot and wasting precious time.

Leadership is a strong character quality that is necessary for a manager to have. All good managers, as is with all good leaders carry out their job well and efficiently. Managers must be able to communicate the purpose of and goals of the day (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Motivation and positive character qualities keep employees on the move. An unplanned, unorganized, weak natured manager is not going

Introduction

The competitive scenario in this business environment calls for organizations to formulate a strategy that increases their brand image and positioning among the customers. In this regard it is very important to analyze and identify the demands of the customers as that would enable it to position itself a preferred brand so as to analyze these aspects and to frame a basis for an integrated marketing communication strategy. In this regard a primary study has been carried out with a sample size of 5 individuals. These individuals would include general customers who would be chosen from the population using a simple random sampling technique. In depth interviews would be conducted by using a questionnaire specifically designed for this purpose (refer annexure). In depth interviews would be conducted to analyze the different aspects related to branding and positioning and the customers thought process while making a purchase decision.

Findings and Analysis

The designed questionnaire was taken to the chosen set of respondents who were necessarily consumers who had purchased an Apple product. In response to a question on the main aspects that influences brand evaluation by the customers it was observed that the main aspects that influences them particularly in the customer segment of Apple was quality. Customers often perceived a product on the basis of product features and reputation of the brand as they felt it added value to their social status as well. A certain section of the respondents also stated the importance of price as a crucial aspect while undertaking a purchase decision.

The survey findings also stated that brands that become a hit with the consumers are normally those that have a good brand image. This brand image is built mainly on the basis of product attributes, service quality and reputation of the brand in the market. Quality is one area that seems to have been the most important factor stated by the respondents as main criteria that makes brands popular and hit in the market. The respondents stated that brands that had a good reputation with quality standards as well as customer service were more likely to be the chosen brand by the customers. It was perhaps for the reason that most of the respondents felt that quality and product features were the most important criteria for decision making by the customers. In the course of the survey it was also found that brand image also depended on the business profile of the organization. Brands like Google and Apple score high with regard to brand image by virtue of the robustness of their business models. The survey also revealed that customer service as well as the marketing communication strategy also plays a major role in the development of brand image of an organization as most respondents felt that the manner in which an organization communicated with the customers had a very lasting and comprehensive effect on the overall positioning and brand image of an organization.

In response to a question on the ways customers evaluate as brand it was observed that most customers used a cost benefit analysis to analyze a brand. Most of the respondents were of the view that if the cost of a product tends to satisfy their demands then they perceive it to be a good brand. In addition to this respondents also stated that product features and additional facilities like loyalty points, rewards and bonuses also played a major role in the perception of brands among the customers. In summation it was found that most of the respondents stated the importance of the elements of the marketing mix as the essential ingredients that makes brands successful in the market. Respondents also stated that location of stores also constituted a criterion for selecting a particular brand in the market. Respondents also stated the importance of online stores and availability of products on the internet. This was noted especially among the working class customers who had little time to visit the stores due to their hectic lifestyle and work pressures. Organizations like Apple that have a dedicated online channel found much appreciation among the respondents. In addition to this respondents also stated the importance of online channel as a medium of communication and advertising. Companies like Apple have very well exploited this aspect to gain importance and improve its brand positioning. The company has gained widespread importance and effective positioning by using the online communication channel. The respondents also stated the importance of social networking sites while framing a brand image for a particular brand in the market.

The response generated from the survey also highlighted the aspect of the perception of individuals with regards to the perceptions of the best brands in the market. It was found that brand image and positioning were the most important aspects that customers sort out between the large numbers of brands available in the market. The respondents stated that the best brands were those that satisfied their needs and wants and also gave them a sense of pride by owning that brand. Brands with product offerings that satisfy the needs and wants of the customers are generally perceived to be good brands in the mindset of the customers. Respondents also stated the importance of peer reviews as one the criterions for analyzing a brand in the market. Effective and positive feedbacks about a particular brand largely help customers segregate between good and poor brands. Social networking was found to one media that was largely reported by respondents that helped them distinguish between brands in the market. Respondents often rate brands as good when they score well on the expectations of the consumer and this expectation may be in any form that includes product quality, features or attractive pricing. However it was also observed that in product segments

It is one of several things in your life that you can’t get around. Therefore, it is important to remember that we all handle the grief differently. Grief and how to process it are something that Anne Hayden’s short story “Same Same but Different” deals with. Ellers fin intro

The narrator, who is also the main character (from now on TMC ), is an Irish girl from Dublin. We never get her name or age, but we know she moved to Melbourne a few months ago because she was “tired of everyone’s pity and morbid curiosity” after her twin sister Molly died. Now she is now working as a teacher. Her original hair color is brown, but after Molly’s death she cut her hair and dyed it blonde because she no longer wanted to look like Molly and neither did everybody else.

The narrator’s personality is complicated. She is struggling to accept her twin’s death and to find her own identity without “her other half”. She feels guilty of the death of her sister and to beof being happy for the separation they had this summer. She thought that if she had not returned to Ireland earlier than her sister, she had been able to save her life, but at the same time she realized that she was not responsible for it at all. TMC is also very thoughtful , she thinks a lot about Molly and the memories they made together, and seems therefore unable to have fun at on her date with Luke and because of that had to make up a lie to get away. “[…] listening to this Aussie lad bang on about how he’s really into minimal techno. I’m nodding away to the sounds of Bros and smiling to myself, he probably thinks I’m being ironic or something.”

The main subject of the two chapters is the war between two different gangs. Both have some sort of allegory that a lot of people don’t know about in the novel. Some of the gangs that exist on the street may have been involved in a war between gangs that have started in the 1970s, but there is also a lot of good stuff about their actions. ”[/p] In the first chapter the reader is introduced to C, a member of The Sixties Counter-Terrorists and the group which caused the destruction of his house by a helicopter, but if this has the same effect in the next chapter (the first chapter), C looks like he is more like in the movie. Some of his friends, like E, find the whole thing disturbing, but he has a lot of admiration for them and is quite nice to the group. It feels like the book begins in the beginning of a more open world that is very familiar from a previous book and it is not entirely unexpected, but C is rather curious and gets quite the response,”””””””. One thing that comes to my mind after reading the first four volumes is that The Sixties Counter-Terrorists is very loosely structured and with strong plot points that it feels to me very much right as the second book is set in history.

The book is an allegory of political power. The end of the world has consequences that the human psyche should struggle to control, ” the end of civilization being at stake. A very large political power, both the government and the citizens, all of the three major parties and all branches of society should suffer as a result. As an allegory of politics C has a lot of power and is responsible for the destruction of that power, but that power is also an element in The Sixties Counter-Terrorists who have some great influence over some of the other three protagonists in the book. ”[/p] However, I was interested in the themes of social justice, gender equality, anti-racism, gender equality, racism and sexism which are extremely topical in The Sixties Counter-Terrorists. I think you know about the first two chapters of The Sixties Counter-Terrorists and that the author did a great job using and highlighting both of these themes to bring out the audience emotionally. I believe it was because of that book that an interesting read for the next couple of chapters.

The first chapter is about what the book is going to tell you. First of all that is very important. First, I feel that if I haven’t read this book within the three main chapters I am forgetting some things: what is an allegory? What does a word mean here? And that might have something to do with the plot about “one who is to be loved”. ”[/p] Secondly and more importantly, there are other themes and themes that are coming to my attention in the rest of the book, but this is going to help me understand those that I have missed. First of all that was of the most telling aspect because of it being presented right and there. It all started with the end of

In addition to the above TMC has a difficult time adapting to her life in Melbourne because she thinks that she is unable to make friends, and to have a relationship.

The narrator’s relationship to her twin sister was very close in spite of the fact that they were very different, but althoughtalthough TMC loved Molly very much, she felt like their relationship were kind of dominated by Molly and that makes TMC feel insignificant as seen in this quote “[…] her on lead vocals, me on backing. We’d mock fight over which of us could have Luke Goss, […] But I knew if the unlikely situation did arise, Molly would get Luke and I’d have to settle for his slightly less handsome brother Matt.” Somewhere we can also see Molly was the predominant of the two, is when TMC tells about her stammered when she was younger. When that happened Molly, although it annoyed TMC, finished her sentences and talked for both of them, this can be seen in this quote “We fought a lot that summer, I was tired of her finishing my sentences and speaking for both of us, a throwback to when I had a stammer as a child.”

Americans in the colonial period were primarily concerned

with matters of religion and conscience. In every aspect of

their society, religion and morality was one of the first things

that came into focus.

In 1688, a group of Quakers voted in favor of a resolution

against slavery. Their reason for doing this was that slavery

was bad enough for any human being to partake in, let alone

Christians like themselves. The Quakers were a

non-discriminatory group of people who believed in religious as

well as personal freedom.

In New England schools, religion and death were the two

principal themes mentioned the most in textbooks. By stressing

religion in school, it was hoped that children would follow the

right path to their deliverance. They also told children the

truth about death, and that it was cruel and could come at any

moment in their lives. Again, religion was thrust into young

people’s minds, pressuring them into thinking about their own

salvation, before it was too late.

The Puritans were also another group in early America who

came to the new world to escape the ways of Europe and to start

a new life. They believed that the Universe was God-centered,

and that man was inherently sinful and corrupt, rescued from

damnation only by discretionary divine grace. They felt they

were duty-bound to do Gods will which they could understand

best by studying the Bible and the universe which God had created

and which he controlled.

The Puritans are known most for their involvement in the

Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials began when two young

girls, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, began playing with

magic. After strange things began to happen during their

meddlings, they fell ill. Sometimes they would stare into empty

space, choke and cough, or get on their knees and bark as if they

were animals. After doctors diagnosed that the “evil hand” had

touched the girls, their ministers pressured them to confess

Vlad Dracula And Romanian People research essay help

Romania for BusinessEssay title: Romania for BusinessPresent-day Romania is just slightly smaller in area than Great Britain (or about the size of New York and Pennsylvania combined), with a population of about 23 million. Separated from the Balkan Peninsula to the south by the Danube River, Romania shares borders today with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova. Its southeastern frontier follows the Black Sea. The Romanian people descended from the ancient Romans and the Dacians, an ancient Thracian tribe native to the land now called Romania. The majority of Romanias citizens are ethnic Romanians, but there are also many minorities. Hungarians, Saxons, and Gypsies are the largest ethnic minority groups. Most Romanians follow the Christian Orthodox religion, even through the Communist years when religious practice was outlawed.

The first recorded census of Romanias was done in 1815, and the number of people has been increasing steadily in recent years. Estimates from the Census Bureau show there are roughly 1,500,000 Romanias. Romanias were settled in parts of Central and Northern Europe between the 14th and 14th century as a Roman minority. Romanias were nomadic (such as in Anatolia and Albania) although many of the communities were organized into the Romani family. In the 14th century there were a number of Roman emperors, though the majority of today’s Romanians were not members of Roman society, but came to Romania from other parts of the world and were considered part of a central Roman nation, known as “Romania”. Romanias lived in different parts of eastern and central Central Europe, but some had their own Roman-themed towns and regions. They included the Dacians, who were settled in parts of Central and northern Europe before the Middle Ages, and Bulgarians, who were settled in parts of the Balkans (as well as parts of the Balkans today) before the Balkan states began their empire (which they do today). In ancient times a Romania was often not allowed access to a town and did not reside in a certain town which allowed permission to speak only that town’s language. This practice was prohibited in Rome and the Roman military ruled the eastern and southern regions very much as long ago as the seventh century CE. By the third and subsequent centuries the Romans and their allies were moving west toward the Balkan provinces and even into Greece and Cyprus.[citation needed] In 1712, Romanias settled on the island of Ganymede in northern Italy. The community was mostly Roman Catholic in appearance, though the Catholic community also had a small population of Slavs and Jews. It also remained a Roman and Jewish community. After Germany fell in the war, and Hungary started establishing a border with the Holy Roman Empire in 1821 the area changed into a Roman population of mostly Romanian residents. Within a century Romanias had become Romanians in size and number. The Romanias of northern Italy were a small population at a time when European immigrants as well as the rest of Rome were often taking refuge in the small town of Messina in northern Italy.[citation needed]

Romania in its present form has been in existence only since 1859, but can trace its history to the era around 2000 B.C.E. Over its four thousand years, Romanias geographical location between western Europe and the East has forced its citizens to defend their land through almost continual wars, invasions, occupations, oppressions, and massacres. For more than 50 years following World War II, Romania was ruled by a succession of Communist leaders. From 1965 to 1989, the Romanians were subjected to arguably the worst despotic regime among the Soviet Bloc countries: that of Nicolae Ceausescu who, along with his wife Elena, destroyed historical villages and buildings, confiscated essentially everything of value, and literally stole the food from his own people. The Ceausescus were overthrown during a violent revolution in December 1989, and executed shortly thereafter. Questions still linger about whether the revolution was instigated and orchestrated by forces in Moscowor by Ceaucescus own henchmen.

Vlad Dracula — pronounced Drah-COO-lah — the historical Dracula, was a Wallachian prince who ruled Romania from 1456 to 1462. He was not a vampire; tales of these mythical creatures have persisted in folklore for centuries, and they were popularized by author Bram Stoker in the late 1800s. During the fifteenth century, the Turks conquered most of what is now the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe, spreading Byzantine culture throughout the vast Ottoman Empire that it ruled. Vlad Dracula repelled the invading armies by impaling his Turkish enemies on spikes, earning him the sobriquet Vlad Tepes — pronounced TSEH-pesh — or Vlad the Impaler. (Perhaps this inspired Stoker to kill his vampires in a similar manner.) Because of their fear of Vlad, the Turks did not press for sovereign control of the region and allowed Romania to function as a suzerainty. This gives some explanation why Romanians speak a Latin-based language to this day — unlike their Slavic neighbours. It was also Vlad Dracula who founded the city of Bucuresti, now the capital of Romania.

The territory of modern Romania was settled before the 7th Century BC by the Geto-Dacian peoples. From the 7th Century BC, the Greeks established trading colonies on the Black Sea coast which, along with the rest of the Greco-Dacian territory, was occupied by the Romans until 271 AD.

Until the 10th Century, the area was populated by invading Goths, Huns, Avars, Slavs, Bulgars, and Hungarians, but the indigenous Romanians survived in village communities and by the 10th Century a feudal system had been established. From the 10th Century, Hungary occupied Transylvania which, by the 13th Century, was an autonomous Hungarian region though still containing a majority Romanian population.

The regions of Moldavia and Wallachia were also targeted for Hungarian expansion but were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire by the 15th Century. In 1812, Russia seized an area of Moldavia from the Turks, but the remainder of Moldavia and Wallachia, with French assistance, united in 1859 under Alexandru Cuza, to form a national state which bore the name Romania from 1862.

Cuza abdicated in 1866 to be succeeded by King Carol I, who in 1877 declared independence from the Ottoman Empire and expanded Romanian territory by taking Dobruja in 1878. Aiming to further extend its boundaries, Romania entered the First World War on the side of the Triple Entente (UK, France, and Russia). Immediate invasion by Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria followed; however, at the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919, Romania was awarded Transylvania and Bessarabia, bringing their ethnic Romanian populations within Romanian boundaries.

During the inter-war years, King Carol II and his Foreign Minister Titulescu formed alliances with France, UK, and the Little Entente (Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia) and signed a Balkan Pact with Turkey, Yugoslavia, and Greece. Relations were also established with the USSR. In 1938, however, King Carol II declared a personal dictatorship
