The U.S. work environment has changed significantly over the last century. The workforce has shifted from primarily agriculture based to industrialization, drastically changing employee work conditions. Many labor laws and regulations have been passed by Congress to protect employees from conducting unfair labor practices. Workers also began to form labor unions with the intent of collectively bargaining for better working conditions and wages. The first labor union was established in 1792, and many other unions have since been established in a variety of industries, such as teachers, firefighters, police, and professional sports players. Labor unions were created to protect workers from being treated unfairly by their employers. This is done primarily through the collective bargaining process and through advocating for federal legislation that will better protect its members from unfair labor practices. Labor unions also guarantee employees health and other fringe benefits. In this paper, we discuss several crucial functions of the labor union, including the collective bargaining process, the purpose and functions of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the process of negotiating an employment agreement, the arbitration and mediation process, and unions involvement in Congress.

Collective Bargaining

One of the most important objectives of a labor union is to collectively bargain with employers on behalf of its members. Established largely by federal statutes, collective bargaining is “the continuous relationship between an employer and a designated labor organization representing a specific unit of employees for the purpose of negotiating written terms of employment” (Carrell & Heavrin, 2010, p. 106). This process has existed in the United States for more than 200 years. Collective bargaining offers employees the opportunity to formally negotiate specific terms of their employment contracts including, but not limited to, wages, working conditions, working hours, work safety, benefit programs, termination, promotion, and discipline. The end goal is to reach an agreement that is mutually beneficial to both the employee and the employer. “The agreements reached through collective bargaining are legally binding and apply to all workers, whether or not they actively participated in the bargaining process” (ILO, 2011). Through an election process, employees select a union or labor organization to represent them through negotiations. Collective bargaining is described as a continuous process as it begins with the negotiation of the employment contract and lasts through the life of the contract, “with almost daily interpretation and administration of its provisions” (Carrell & Heavrin, 2010, p. 106).

Some benefits of collective bargaining include:

Allows the parties to discuss issues and settle disputes through consensus and dialogue rather than through confrontation or labor disputes;

Reduces feelings of uncertainty and instability in the workplace;

Allows both parties to participate in the decision-making process on important work-related issues;

Motivates employees; and

Provides employees with a collective voice, which may be more comforting and effective than addressing employment issues with managers individually.

Some disadvantages of collective bargaining include:

A union members inability to resolve disputes individually with his or her employer;

Can create significant polarization between employers and managers;

Can take longer to resolve a dispute due to the bureaucracy and formality of the collective bargaining process; and

Requires members to pay union dues.

Ashley is a nine-year-old girl with the mental age of a three-month-old. Her condition means she will never walk, talk or even roll over. I am going to give the arguments for and against this controversial matter.

One of Ashley’s parent’s main motives is to keep their daughter ‘child-sized’ so she stays light enough to easily carry around. They will then be able to take her on family outings and generally be able to spend more time with their child while causing minimal difficulty for them and the people around them.

On the other hand it is also argued that the decision to go ahead with these treatments is simply for convenience on the parent’s part and not for the benefit of Ashley.

Keeping her small will also increase her standards of life as if she was allowed to develop to her full size then she would have to stay in bed for most of her life causing other problems like bed sores and increased risk of obesity and related diseases.

It could also be argued that Ashley’s treatment is a breach of her human rights. She has the right to grow as every other human being does. Growth is a natural process not a disease. All children grow even those with disabilities and as she cannot say no to the treatment it is left to others to decide for her.

Ashley’s parents also worry that Ashley will become the victim of sexual abuse by a carer she may have and they think that removing her uterus will remove any possibility that their daughter would become pregnant in this way.

Some people believe that Ashley’s parent’s decision was a massive betrayal on their part. The people who she should trust the most have treated her as less than human, removing her dignity.

On the other hand it could be seen as a removal of her dignity if she was allowed to grow into an adult. Is it making Ashley more dignified when she’s 30 and still having her nappy changed? At least in the body of a child she can rely on her carers with the mind and body of a child.

Another argument against Ashley’s treatment is that the removal of perfectly healthy functioning organs is unacceptable medical practice. It could be said then that why shouldn’t Ashley’s limbs be amputated also as she is not going to get much use of them?

The treatment to halt Ashley’s limbs could also be compared to the use of painkillers in that it is in order to make her more comfortable, as painkillers do, and generally improve her standards of life.

Studying Distant Objects         Astronomers study light that comes from distant objects to determine its composition, temperature, speed, and rotation of distant objects. This process of determining its composition is called spectroscopy. Spectroscopy was first used to study celestial objects in 1863 by William Higgins. By using this process Higgins discovered that the Sun and most stars are primarily composed of hydrogen gases. By using spectroscopy it was also noted that different objects give off different spectrums of light and absorb different spectrums of light. Where an object falls in the spectrum of light can be determined by examining its peak intensity at each wave length of light. The spectrum is the band of colors that white light is composed of, in the order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet from long to short wavelength. The light helps us to determine an objects composition, temperature, and rotation as well (Col, 2015).

There are three types of spectra used to evaluate light. The absorption spectrum  is when objects  absorb light at different wavelengths.. The intensity of this kids of light drops in objects which absorb light and appear as the darker lines on a rainbow of colors. Stars and planets that have atmospheres, and galaxies absorb light and are put into the absorption spectra. (Col, 2015).         Another type of spectrum that gives off light at different wavelengths is called the Emission spectrum. The atoms and molecules in hot gases create extra light and produce bright lines up against a black background. Comets, nebula and some types of stars fall in these spectra called the Emission spectrum or bright line spectrum (Col, 2015).         Objects whose light gives off a rainbow of colors like a prism without interruption fall in the spectrum called the Continuous spectrum. One measures a star’s brightness based  off of  its luminosity and its distance from us. This measurement is done by using Inverse Square Law for Light. In other words, the farther away you are from an object the less light will appear. Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram         Astronomer Ejnar Hertzsprung and astronomer Henry Noris Russell noticed the relationship of the stars surface temperature and its luminosity. They used this relationship to develop a type of graph to identify where each star is in its lifecycle. The graph is essentially based on two properties of the stars. One property is the star’s surface temperature, also known as its spectral type. The surface temperature is plotted on the x-axis or horizontally. Red stars have the hottest temperature where as blue stars have a cooler temperature. We are able to tell a star’s surface temperature by examining the wavelength of its peak intensity. This is known as  Wiens law. Wiens Law tells us that objects of different temperature emit spectra that peak at different wavelengths (, 2015). The second property of the star graphed on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is the star’s luminosity or amount of energy radiating from it. This property is plotted on the y-axis and is usually based on a ratio-scale with the main reference point being the Sun. By graphing these two properties we are able to map out where most stars are in their lifecycle at  that point in time.

Natural resources are said to be a curse because it is often associated with a predatory government who has little concern for providing goods and incentives to facilitate investment while abusing their political power to capture natural resource rents to increase their own wealth. These countries, including Venezuela, Nigeria,… are those who suffer this corruption, which eventually lead to economic collapse. As shown in Table 1 in the Article(“Do Natural Resources Limit Global Economic Development?”), the resource rich countries have a lower GDP growth while the total rent are much higher than the resource poor countries, especially the small, oil exporters whose GDP growth was -0.7 while the total rent was 21.22%. This happens mainly because of the governments greed to exploit from their own countries to invest in protected industry or government services. They also make use of their primary product exports for their own benefits and postponed competitive industrialization. Therefore, these countries stay in despair despite their natural gifts.

As being abundant natural resources, some countries, such as Angola have been the target of colonization by other countries. Being exploited since the very early days, these countries lost their chance to be industrialized and develop and in the mean time they have to feed the more powerful nations. Even after they have achieved their independence, they still have to face other issues raise up due to natural resources, especially in those countries without a developmental political state. An example would be the civil war in Angola. Funded by other more developed countries during the Cold War, the conflicts between two sides still persist due to their access to the countrys natural resources, which are oil and diamond. This greed-driven conflicts prevent Angola from developing and hence the country is still in despair. The natural resources given to them appear to be the cause for their developments hindrance, especially in the hands of such corrupted government.

Affects: Population

This is the part where I am most concerned about. Africa is experiencing a massive decline. This is due to the mass migration and development of many countries. They have lost their most fertile and fertile fields, they have lost their natural resources, and now even their small agricultural areas. Even if the population increase of this country is very small in size, this is because many farmers from these areas are not able to afford to feed them and the amount of farm labour. Furthermore the countries like Egypt and Yemen are rapidly declining. What makes so many nations, especially the USA, particularly vulnerable, is the fact that they must rely on their natural resources to survive in one of the world’s most economically developed societies. By not being able to have sufficient land and water resources, they are still in an economic predicament, especially because of their development of a military and economic apparatus.

Population is not only a fact, it is also a function of geography, social class and age. The decline in a country’s population since 1995 is due largely to the high rate of income increases in these countries as well as the natural disasters that are occurring along the borders. The more educated their country is, the less able they will be to afford to food, rent accommodation or medical care for their children and as well, they must also rely on other social services to maintain their livelihood.

People can be very easily misled by talking about the fact that they have the largest agricultural production, but unfortunately are unable to get the maximum income. In the 1990’s the population of the world’s richest country, Brazil, was estimated to be just under 1.4 billion (20.75 million people), making it the world’s smallest country at the end of 1990. The average daily food consumption of Brazil is over 70 kg/day, which is also more than the highest on earth (25kg/day) when compared to the average annual consumption of the last 5 centuries (20.8kg/day). This massive food production, especially in the poorest countries in the world is being produced only by the poorest of those poor countries which were colonised by colonisers. The fact that the African African National Congress (ANC) has come to the aid of the UN, World Bank, Development Council, World Health Organisation and the World Health Organisation to assist them in getting food for their children. This hunger and poverty will continue for years to come as more and more people get on the streets with food and the money. For example, the African National Congress has been supported in several places by the US Treasury and the UN. At the same time, the African National Congress and Global Fund for Population and Development have also been supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. The African National Congress is planning a huge humanitarian project to provide nutrition to the children by providing financial support via financial aid such as food and training.

If population does not improve, one cannot afford to survive. There are also huge problems which can be solved in our countries with the help of an increased government. For example the African Development Plan has started to use a large amount of energy which could result in a real reduction in hunger. If population worsens, they are very likely to have to start an emergency fund. The first step is therefore the development of a national strategy for the world’s poorest countries. We need all of these countries, rich and poor, ready to aid and equip the world’s poorest and most oppressed.


We should also be aware of the fact that in the first place, we have failed to understand the economic and social factors which have driven the increase in the population of African nations. When we understand that we should develop our own economic security, education resources and healthcare, we will be much more willing to give aid towards our people with a focus on our needs, as the poor will help to feed the more prosperous countries.

The late 19th century to early 20th century is characterized as the Progressive Era. This is when reformers strived for better welfare policies and more rights for the people. Although three presidents reigned during this movement, only two are known for their policies. Theodore Roosevelt, the arrogant and egomaniacal president spoke out of ambition, whereas Woodrow Wilson, the more morally inclined leader spoke out of actual desire. Both had similar ideas, but their means of displaying them, and actually carrying through were different. Roosevelt was militaristic and felt war solved everything. Wilson was a pacifist and felt America should try to help their own people first before going to war. Roosevelt fought for the protection of the environment, while Wilson persistently pushed for a better educational system. Primarily though, both patriotic leaders strove for a middle path between the mobs and the boss. Therefore, although both Roosevelt and Wilson were leaders of the Progressive Movement, Roosevelts big, verbose speeches differed entirely from Wilsons platform to directly help the people.

Theodore Roosevelt began his political career as vice president under William McKinley. Nicknamed the “Rough Rider”, Roosevelt was immediately characterized as militaristic and arrogant. He felt that war solved any problem, and was always eager to fight. He was also an imperialist and succeeded in increasing the size of the American empire. Roosevelt found himself relating more to the soldier, and therefore sympathized with all American veterans. He also admired the hunter, the cowboy, the frontiersmen, and the naval hero. In other words, Roosevelt hated the wealthy. He felt they had spent too long controlling society, and their dictatorial reign should end immediately. As much as this was true, Roosevelt also feared the poor and working class mobs. Although they had limited resources, they had power in numbers, since the poorer classes dominated the country. Roosevelt is known for his help building the Panama Canal, his success in the Spanish American War, and his environmental policies. He felt the Spanish American War should be fought as aggressively as possible. In terms of the Progressive Movement though, Roosevelt was ambiguous, and did not know what he stood for. In his Autobiography he confessed, “I cannot say that I entered the presidency with any deliberately planned and far-reaching scheme of social betterment.” He entered the presidency, in turn, to feed his huge and relentless ego. Roosevelt took the credit for gigantic projects that were physically impossible to achieve by one person. As Richard Hofstadter points out in his book, The American Political Tradition, “Roosevelts determination to enter politics and become a member of the governing class was not inspired by a program of positive aims, but rather by a vague sense of dedication. The shirts and clothes that are ordered every spring and fall show his simplexes in expressing his wealth to his beloved Daisy. His “beautiful shirts . . . It makes me sad because Ive never seen such beautiful shirts before” (98). It seems silly to cry over simple shirts, but they symbolize an American Dream which people desire. These shirts represent the opulent manner of Gatsbys wealth and his ability to try and purchase Daisys love, this time through the use of extensive clothing.

Fitzgerald wisely shows how Gatsby uses his riches to buy Daisy. In the story, we know that “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy–they smashed up things . . . and then returned back into their money” By this, we know that Daisys main (and maybe only) concern is money. Gatsby realizes this, and is powered by this. He is driven to extensive and sometimes illegal actions. He feels he must be rich and careless for his five year love. All these enlighten us to Gatsbys personality, therefore we know Gatsby is willing to use an unlimited source of income to actually buy trifles to prove his worth to Daisy. He will buy a house that takes, even him, three years to pay for and purchases clothes every Spring and Fall. He does all he can in order to buy, what he feels is his only happiness, the woman he has watched for five years, the woman whos only concern is money, the infamous, Daisy.

Fitzgerald’s explanation is very similar to that of the Fosters:

“The reason I’m here is purely to show my readers that people are selfish, the reason I’m here are those I once knew. You cannot know them from their behavior, to say the least, but they’re a powerful force when they do.”

In her original text the character (Daisys Targaryen, the “mother of dragons”) is seen as only a little more interesting: “She’s a lot deeper than I realize, but I’ve never seen her before or seen all of her scenes – in fact, the very first one you see, I will not forget. You’re right, as if we, who are so close to her, were so distant and so far away from her, but we are all still very much closer than that.” Gatsby has had no real way to truly make such a profound and universal connection to the people of Westeros. He is the closest thing that Gatsby can tell me, just by the fact that he only has himself and a group of characters who are really close to him to make a connection. The characters in this book are a lot greater in depth than his, but he does this brilliantly, in a way that shows great depth of personality to his characters.

As I mentioned in previous posts, this is based on both a series of novels, and this blog, but again I love this book for its way I can tell stories, and my love for characters whose characters were so close to me that they didn’t bother me. It provides a beautiful, and compelling way to explore how there is more to us, and what we can do to take care of ourselves when we’re not happy. As a writer, I am always looking forward to reading this work, as well as having a little fun. We love this book!

With a photograph, Gatsby effectively, and almost unmistakably, recreates his past. Not only does Oxford involve lies, but most of this recreation involves numerous obscene and unbelievable lies. Nick even jokes about it and says that Gatsby, “live[s] like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe . . . With an effort I managed to restrain my incredulous laughter”. These and numerous other lies prove how “James Gatz” tries to recapture the past through the use of deception. There is only one reason only why Gatsby tries so desperately to alter his past: his pursuit of Daisy.

Not only does Gatsby buy many material items to impress her, but he continues to accumulate as much money as he can in order to physically buy her. As Jordan states, “He wants her to see his house, and you live right next door” ( ). Perhaps the only reason he does is to show how much money Gatsby possesses. Salvador Dali is a talented, self-proclaimed artist that brought a new vison onto art. His parents supported his talent and built him his first studio when he was still a child inside of their summerhome. Dali attended the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. Dali did not limit himself to one particular style or medium. Beginning with his early impressionistic work going into his surrealistic works, for which he is best known, and ending in what is known as his classic period, it becomes apparent just how varied his styles and mediums are. He worked with oils, watercolors, drawings, sculptures, graphics and even movies. Dali held his first one-man show in Barcelona in 1925 where his talents were first recognized. He became internationally known when some of his paintings were shown in the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928. The next year he joined the Paris Surrealist Group and began his love affair with Gala who became more than just his lover, she was his business manager, muse and greatest inspiration. Surrealism emerged from what was left of Dada in the early 1920s and unlike Dada, a nihilistic movement, Surrealism held a promising and more positive view of art and because of this won many converts. It began as a literary movement in a Paris magazine. What they held in common was their belief in the importance of the unconscious mind and its manifestations, as was stressed by Freud. They believed that through the unconscious mind a plethora of artistic imagery would be unveiled. Both of these movements were also anti-establishment and they rejected the traditional Western Judeo-Christian beliefs and moral values and believed that reason and logic had failed mans quest for self-knowledge. The Surrealists differed from Dada in one other, ideological aspect. The Surrealists believed that man could indeed improve the human condition, the major difference between the two movements. A few years before his marriage to Gala in 1934, Dali emerged as a leader of the Surrealist Movement. Although Dali was intrigued with the Surrealist technique of automatism, in which the artist with pen and ink let his hand move quickly over the paper and let their thought through to the paper without allowing their minds to control those thoughts, he had already laid his foundation for his own Surrealistic art in his youth through his paranoiac-critical method. This contribution of his was an alternate manner in which to view or perceive reality. It was no new concept; it could be traced back to Leonardo da Vinci and his practice of staring at stains on walls, clouds, streams, etc. and seeing different figures in them. Everyone who goes cloud watching uses this technique. Dali, however gave this method a different twist. Dali linked his paranoiac-critical method, the ability to look at any object and see another, with paranoia, which was characterized then by chronic delusions and hallucinations. Dali himself was not paranoid but was able to place himself in paranoid states. In one of his more famous statements he said, “The only difference between myself and a madman is that I am not mad.” He was able to look at reality and dream of new ideas and paint them, which he called his “hand-painted dream photographs.” Through his paranoiac-critical method, Dali was able to look at everyday objects and attach a subjective meaning based on his obsessions, phobias and conflicts. The result was a new, imaginative visual presentation of reality. By the forties, however, Dali began his move from Surrealism into what he called his classic era. This is the area I will be focusing on in paper when discussing several of his artworks. Just before World War II, Dali and his wife fled from Europe to the United States. They spent the next decade in the States where Dali went through a metamorphosis of sorts. He gave his first major retrospective exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and soon afterward he published his autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dali. He began his series of eighteen large canvasses. One of the better known of these works is The Hallucinogenic Toreador. Dealing with the problem of Double Jeopardy (EDFJ) refers to a legal test for the legality of a rule that is changed based on an appeal to the Court. For an appeal the Court must assess:

whether it has the effect of reducing the amount of time to rule one

whether if it is accepted, not to rule out for any short period of time, or whether it is not accepted, not to rule out for the short amount of time; and and

whether it was, or is not, within the limits of the Rules of Parliaments or of the ABC.

For any question asked by a Government candidate or government staff it will be a question which is directly considered by the Secretary of State, the Minister for Justice. In a case such as this a case where a rule that a judge would not accept is presented by a barrister, court or solicitor will be raised as they require in the law

The Judge in this case was, and will be, Judge Robert Sartor of The Advocate, a former Legal Adviser for Senator George Brandis in an appeal with the Bill C-41. Under the new Constitution, judges are appointed to three levels from the Court in Victoria, all appointed by Parliament to three years in a Parliament. The Judicial Appointments Act 2002 requires Judges to meet to discuss new legislation (such as Bill V or the Federal Constitutional Bill), to be reviewed by the Constitutional Review Committee, and to make a final decision on the bill. It further states, “The misfortune is, that the sole object is to make things clean (Gorn 112).” In this part of the book it is very clear that it is saying that the womans duty is to clean. In Womens Diaries of the Westward Journey it illustrates this in a couple of passages. For example, one woman wrote in her diary, “Oh! Horrors how shall I express it; it is the dreaded washing day . . . but washing must be done and procrastination wont do it for me (Schlissel 83).” Although this woman obviously did not like doing the washing she saw it as her job to do. In addition, the book describes this scene, “The banks of a river would be lined with women who carried their kettles, their washtubs, and piles of unwashed linen (Schlissel 82).” Again, it is the women who are doing the cleaning. The McGuffey Readers being the handbook that young girls would read in school taught them that it was their place to do the cleaning. It is apparent that they took that into consideration as shown by the Womens Diaries and even today is seen as their role.

Women were a nurturing part of the household and therefore it was seen as their job to take care of the children. For example, the editor of the McGuffeys states, “the middle-class ideal depicted women as nurturers (Gorn 48).” By nurturers he means one that is able to care for somebody, which turns into being the one to look after the children. In addition, to show what the editor said in the McGuffeys there is a poem that is from a childs point of view talking about his mother, “Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair; Over my slumbers your loving watch keep; Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to sleep! (Gorn 108).” It is shown here how the mother is to watch over her children and take care of them. Moreover, in the Womens Diaries it talks about the hardship mothers had, “Accounts shade and darken in the pages of women whose energies were spent nursing and caring for infants and small children (Schlissel 115).” It says that their diaries turn in essence bleak because they are being overwhelmed with so many duties and then on top of that having to care for the children. Being on the trail made it very difficult for the women to perform these duties as the author points out, “The West to them meant the challenge of rearing a family and maintaining domestic order against the disordered life on the frontier (Schlissel 115).” The women had to face to challenge and they did in a way that shows that the men were not the only ones who had an immense amount of courage in this great undertaking.

An integral part of the nineteenth century Victorian way of life was having strong morals. The women were seen as pure beings and therefore it was there job to keep the family unit moral. In The McGuffeys it tells of how the morals were taught to kids very early on, “Victorian moral earnestness was especially aimed at children because it was believed that during youth the habits and ideas of a lifetime were formed (Gorn 59).” Since it was in the youth that they had to be taught these things the woman as the mother had to play an important role in teaching these to her children.

Since the womens place was the home she was expected to prepare meals for the children and the men when they came home from work. Meal preparation was one of the hardships for women on westward journey. For example, women had to cook for everyone and at times, “Last night for supper we had stewed peaches. They were all eaten up before we ladies had any. This morning we had rice and apples boiled together. They were also eaten up before we got any (Schlissel 102).” They would cook for everyone else first and eat last. In addition, since the food had to be cooked over fire what were the women to do when it rained, “In heavy rain, the women might dig a hole in the ground, jam in a hollow ramrod to serve as an air shaft, and then fill the hole with small rocks and bake the bread on these (Schlissel 80).” It seems as though these difficulties of the journey were no match for the inguinty of the women.

I believe that children misbehave for many reasons. Some children just simply are starved for attention and want it regardless if it is negative or not. Some children are hyperactive just enough so that they do not need medication but need some consistency in their lives. I also find that children that misbehave in a school setting have not been taught how to behave at home; they have no guidance to help them when they are away from home so they really do not know any different.

The Parent

My personal opinion on the subject of parenting is that I find people’s parenting is fundamentally different from mine. In my opinion, it is much like their children’s because I feel that having a “little” kid as a result of what they do is a good idea while having a big one for life. I don’t like to make my children do anything you don’t want them to because that would mean that the things you don’t want them to do are wrong and then the consequences would be terrible. This is also true with the kids – there are children of color, many of whom have a very different kind of personality than those of me. My children often find these things are too complicated and too hard for them to deal with. As a parent, I want my child to be able to tell that sometimes the rules have to be written for a reason. If things get out of control, it really only really is a bad idea. You might wonder, how can we take a child away from a parent that is clearly willing to let people be who we want them to be? As I understand it, I’m trying to get away from it but I do it very carefully. I also do not want my kids going to school and do they need homework every day? Well, that could be quite a challenge if you keep them up at night in all three grades.

How will I get out of this tough love of my family? How can I convince my child that parenting is healthy, I will try and get them to focus their lives on what is most important of all, love, and happiness. If it isn’t, I am going to need another child to carry them through the day. That’s really the point about getting out: we want to make us happy. This love for what we do as a family is what will ensure we don’t let our kids down. With all my life I’ve worked on a long-range relationship with my kids and I wanted to help set the terms, but I don’t want them to be locked into that structure and not understand the concepts at all – which makes things feel impossible rather than simple. I also didn’t want it to be like being with a person that wasn’t good to begin with, there’s no way to take care of all the kids and still keep your kids happy. It’s not like parenting is for kids that they want to be happy for. The point is, I’m trying to get the kids to focus their lives on what is most important, love, and happiness and not to worry about it or their feelings. I believe the same rules that children and adolescents do as adults are valid for each other and are even beneficial for each other as well. I hope I’ve convinced you that all parenting is for people so that if you disagree with me then don’t get too caught up in it because that’s what I’m telling you.

I agree with these two models because I to feel that as adults that we are the role model for these children. While most children do have positive role models there are a majority that the only role models they will ever encounter are teachers. I as an educator and a parent feel it is very important to show respect and we should in most cases automatically receive it if we have shown it. I know there are some kids that no matter how good we are to them that they just cant be changed but I believe that with a lot of hard work and effort that we can make a difference in each childs life that we touch. The Assertive Discipline and Positive Classroom Discipline are the two that I think are most alike. The focus of both is to maintain a calm classroom with an environment that establishes routines and encourages good behavior. The logic is basically the same they both believe that all students have the right to learn in a nondisruptive environment while the teacher demands respect and will give respect in return.

This is especially important for the “America’s Europe” part of the “Western Hemisphere” part. While American European culture would never really have been a part of the Western Hemisphere’s society, the United States of America saw itself in this way in its colonization, the U.S.As was not yet part of the larger European society and it still had political and economic roots. Though the Western European culture has remained a part of European Europe for centuries, since its founding in 1720 or so, Europe and American culture have often diverged. America’s European culture has become less Europeanized due to the increasing reliance on Western Europe, including some of Europe’s main European cities, as a means of expanding its population. It has also become less Europeanized because most of Europe is still “not all that different”. In many ways, U.S. America and Europe have had one huge political and social change, but America’s politics, culture, and values have also changed. For America, America’s social and economic changes could have been different. Both the rise and fall of its political parties, as well as the rise of its international policies, made it possible to see these changes, or at least see the political, economic, and geopolitical factors that led America to the “American” perspective. What has changed since the beginning of the nineteenth century is the role of the United States by American policy-makers. Even within U.S. policies, the United States has been a major influence on international relations. Though its relations with both the Soviet bloc and other foreign powers have weakened for the West, the U.S. has been a major player on world issues of food, energy, agriculture, education, energy and other forms of international affairs, in which the United States has influenced some factors such as the development of our relationship with others at home, how foreign powers are treated around the world in the past, but also many other issues that influence the current state of affairs. One of the main differences in the early expansion belief of the Manifest Destiny and the later belief of the 1890s and early 1900s was that the land, for the most part and at least officially, belonged to the Americans. It started with the fruits of the Louisiana Purchase, to the lands that would later be ceded to America in the Mexican American war. The progression went right from East to West, all the way to the California seaboard. Still the sentiment of expansion had lived on, even after the Turner Proclamation declaring the West, closed. This sentiment lived in the form of jingoism, or extreme patriotism by national policy. For example, two American sailors were killed in the streets of Chile. This prompted President Harrison to invite Congress to declare war in the case that Chile would not apologize. On the Sandwich Islands, better known as Hawaii, the newest Hawaiian ruler, Queen Lil, made it clear she would shake off white American settler control. Settlers asked for American intervention, which led to a group of Marines running ashore and raising the American flag over the islands. The question of annexation of the islands became a huge platform in the election of 1896, whereby the winner; President McKinley promised annexation of the Hawaiian Islands. Cuba had been an island under Spanish control for years, fighting for independence. Under the control of Commander Weyler, the Cubans were detained with the policy of reconcentration. With help from the press exaggerating much of cruelties, the American public called for intervention. The ultimate result was a war with Spain and the eventual question over Cuba and the Philippines. The expansionist feeling had never really died after the closing of the West; it just refocused on land that did not rightfully belong to America.

In the 1890s, America was looking to test its strength against the mighty powers of Europe and Japan. These foreign powers were beginning to move out of their own countries to seek land in other countries. Document A, a political cartoon from Thomas Nast, is a perfect allegory for how the powers of Europe quite literally picked countries right off the map, and added them to their grab-bag. Americans, expressing a worry in this, looked back onto the Monroe Doctrine, which proclaimed that European powers would no longer colonize or interfere with the affairs of the newly independent nations of the Americas. But outside the Americas, a specific policy with regard to China, was first advanced by the United States in the Open Door Notes of 1899. In 1898, the United States had become an East Asian power through the acquisition of the Philippine Islands, and when the partition of China by the European powers and Japan seemed imminent, the United States felt its commercial interests in China threatened. Secretary of State John Hay sent notes to the major powers of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and Russia, asking them to declare formally that they would uphold Chinese territorial and administrative integrity and would not interfere with the free use of the treaty ports within their influence of China. Document G, a political cartoon illustrating the open door of the policy on China, clearly shows stance on all of the nations regarding it. In reply to the Open Door Notes, each nation evaded Hays request, taking the position that it could not commit itself until the other nations had complied. During this period there was a strong economic tension. However, by July 1900, Hay announced that each o f the powers had granted consent in principle. The foreign powers might never strayed far from the American mindset, however.

According to Theodore Roosevelt in Document F, any nation, in which the Monroe Doctrine applies to, “knows how to act with reasonable efficiency and decency in social and political matters, if it keeps order…it need fear no interference from the United States.” However, “chronic wrongdoing… ultimately require intervention by some civilized nation, and in the Western Hemisphere the adherence of the Unites States to the Monroe Doctrine may force the United States… to the exercise of international police power.” This was known as the Roosevelt Corollary, an addition to the Monroe Doctrine allowing America to intervene to stabilize debts of Latin American countries.
