Female music artists have used the art form of the music video to express their opinions, experiences and their roles in the heterosexual courtship process. Many contemporary music videos show the female complaining about incompetent males in the relationships. Other videos give confidence to women viewers who are in similar situations. In Christina Aguileras “Fighter” and Destinys Childs “Independent Women”, these women strengthen the position of women by challenging the patriarchal parameters of heterosexual courtship and societal norms of the female roles in relationships.

Christina Aguileras “Fighter” is a motivating song that we assume addresses one of Aguileras relationships. In the song, Aguilera is talking about a man that did her wrong. She sings about the trust issues, fights, stealing and cheating that she went through in her relationship. She also sings about how this man she knew could be so unjust and cruel. “After all you put me through youd think Id despise you but in the end I want to thank you” (Fighter, v. 1). At the end of each verse, Aguilera says “So I want to

thank you” or “So thanks for making me a fighter”,

As Tricia Rose states “These raps are not mournful ballads about the trials and tribulations of being a heterosexual woman. By creating a song which is not complaining or criticizing her ex, she thanks him for what he has put her through. She is telling everyone that she has managed to pull herself out of a relationship that was not beneficial to her and that it did not kill her confidence, but made her a strong fighter in the end. For that reason, “Fighter” reinforces the womans positions and breaks the norms of female roles in the relationship.

The video of “Fighter” is a series of rapid scenes of imagery in black and white. It depicts her internal development and her transformation from traditional societal perceptions of a woman to her personal beliefs as a person. The video opens to a scene in a dark area of a moth struggling to walk. The symbolism of a moth in this video can be depicted as Aguilera being trapped into something that she does not like being in. Moths are usually seen at night or in dark confined places. It then shows Fragile looking ballet dancers supporting themselves on huge pins. The video then goes to Christina Aguilera (dressed in a black cape) in a glass case trying to get out. It also shows her eventually releasing her built up frustration and breaking the glass on her journey to emancipation. Through her travels out of the confined area she starts gaining back strength taking the pins, seen in the beginning scenes, and throwing them with accurate and skilled aim. The video then shows her sitting on the ground and the cape melting away to a moth covered white dress. This shows the final stages of her transition, she has moved from her being a sheltered and dark person to being a new person in the light. In the following scenes show the moth burning, this can represent her old self in the past. As the moth burns, she sings: “I am a fighter, I aint goin stop, There is no turning back, Ive had enough” This shows that she has put Confirming that she has made her full metamorphosis, The last scene shows her completely dressed to her individual style. Her hair and clothes along with the tattoo on her forehead fit her newly developed personality that no other woman has or looks like.

In 2000, Destinys Child released the single off of their album Survivor and the Charlies Angels motion picture sound track. “Independent Women” is a song that depicts women who are powerful and independent as opposed to being subservient and dependent on a man. First fantasy motifs were shown in romanticism. We all know the mystical and unreal characters: ghosts, phantoms etc. Authors for building the special mood and charm of that epoch used that figures.

But fantasy is something more than romantic ways of showing nature or inner experiences of the main character in the novel. It’s also not an attempt of explaining the unreal and difficult to understand visions or event. In the course of time it began to live it’s own life more and more the writers started to use these motifs. And what had happened? They created fairy-tales completely different from the basic kinds of literature, they invented fantasy.

So how did it all start? Well, there are lots of ideas about that. I’m the one who agrees with theory that the very beginning was “Alice in Wonderland” written by Lewis Carroll in 1865. We may laugh that it is on the same bookshelf as “Winnie the Pooh” or “Peter Pan” and many more. It’s a fact that these works were written for children but they had this thing, some kind of new idea, concept that distinguished them, made it different from many others.

That is the origin of fantasy literature. Now I would like to focus on the definition of this sort. Being honest, there is a problem cause there is really no good definition. There are many of them, but each other denies another. One way of solving this is creating many under kinds of fantasy which wonderfully started to suit the novels, e.g.:”Lord of the Rings” became epic fantasy, “Conan” by Robert E. Howard was heroic fantasy and so on. But this is not a good, objective way. My favourite definition is one made by Andrzej Sapkowski. He said: ”Fantasy is all that have a sign with caption ‘Fantasy’. If on the back of a book right under publishers name we can see the inscription ‘fantasy’, that book is included to fantasy kind”. That definition is unpretentious but not faultless. Why? Just because many publishers simply don’t know what to write, they don’t do any captions or do it accidentally. But that is not in our concern.

It wouldn’t be fair to make this a case of literary criticism. The problem would be much more nuanced. There are the problems of reading, of reading by itself. We need to have an informed notion of the literature, how it is done and how it should be said. Of course we can help and we should have a better understanding of it. But we can’t do it without the knowledge that writers have had this experience, that they know all about this field, that they know how a literary critic should write, or has had this experience, or whether they know how a novelist can write a decent story, and that’s what we’re interested in. And there’s room for debate. It’s important to ask the writers what their problem is. But, really, this is what the answer is.

Praise? Well:

1.I think that this definition is a little simplistic. It means that, a) not every word is meant so, but b) all the words mean certain. And I don’t mean to suggest that the word f is wrong. And I think it would be much too harsh as to say “what is wrong, and the writer should be clear on the meaning of it”. To me the point is to point towards something very clear which we can understand, because the writer needs to consider who he is. And that’s true of, for example, the way to explain the definition of the word is to say: We aren’t about to pretend that everything in a book should be in the same sentence or that every word in a book should be a sentence, you want to say that there is a story in the book. Let’s say there are three things: a child and an adult. Let’s say a child says: “I love this book”. That’s about the same as saying the word “love”, but here we know that this is very different from the previous sentence and is a very different phrase from the one we’re looking at. And those are the other three things. Therefore: “He is reading this book”. And that way, there are no ambiguities here. What matters is that the writer is aware of the idea of the story and he is also aware that the words in this sentence and other words in the way you’ve said it, but he doesn’t have to deal with all of that. Rather, he goes through it and he makes certain choices. And that’s the way we ask ourselves.

2.Here is a nice example of how a writer is supposed to respond to a reader in a given situation: “This works! The reader is smart, eh? He knows that when you read it I’m going around looking for more stories. He has given me my advice, and he loves it. He loves this story, okay?” And then his response is: “But, you didn’t like it, did you?” And then he continues the story which is going on in his head and when he goes back to the main thing and does that again this way the reader sees that is a problem. Or as one puts it: “I’ll try writing a story without spoilers”. And so, he gets that. And that is one of the great things about reading novels, is it seems you don’t have to read every single word in that sentence. So the more writers do this, they take away the clutter, the stress and the burden from the others. So if you’re reading an important story, you can focus on the more important things. And then you get the story.

3.My point is that the writer has made choices, but he doesn’t

After trying to define fantasy I’ll introduce possible kinds of it, with the examples.The first one is called “behind the closed door”. The whole idea of it is that behind our, “normal”, real world, the one we live in, exist other dimensions, parallel worlds, lands of fantasy. To that other world usually is leading some door, secret entrance. They can be opened but not everyone can do it, it has to be “The Chosen One”.

The most know example of this kind is “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C. S. Lewis. Lewis from his early childhood had in mind a vision of a faun wandering in a forest covered by snow. That picture developed to stories about the fantasyland called Narnia. When Lewis was a child, he played with his brother hiding in a big oaken wardrobe telling stories. One time he created a land he called Animaland, where animals just like people wore clothes.

In stories about Narnia the realness mixes with fantastic elements. Narnia was a land of magic, where lived incredible creatures: the great king lion Aslan(archetype of Deus artifex which is God the creator), walking trees and nymphs, fauns or satyrs, dwarves and giants, gods and centaurs; they all were talking with human voice. An accident caused that four brothers and sisters entered that strange world. Whilst playing they discovered entrance in the title wardrobe. They were dragged into a battle between the evil White Witch (very familiar to Andersen’s Queen of Snow) and noble Aslan – king and creator of Narnia. Children fought hand in hand with the lion and after winning the war became masters of that fairyland. As kings and queens they ruled wise and with justice. It seemed that the human world was just a dream. But one day, after many happy years on the throne, they got lost in a forest. While walking the trees became coats and they suddenly fell out of the closet. Long years in Narnia were just few minutes in the human world. Children have big imagination so crossing the line between fantasies and real is not a problem, but it is a big challenge for readers. Lewis created the magic land and as he once said:”even if all of that is imagined – trees, grass, sun, moon, stars and Aslan, there is no doubt: this imagined world is much better then the real one”.

The next kinds, beloved by fantasy fans are “never-lands”. They are perfectly defined by one of first never-lands creators Lord Dunsany. He named it as places “beyond the fields we know”. And we are really crossing the line of human perception. Authors don’t blink their eye, don’t pretend like in the Venice carnival. Not everything is from the beginning land of fantasy. Tolkien made never-lands legal, gave them autonomy and independence, full rights in authors imagination. He said that artistic imagination has no borders and cannot be restricted by what is real. We can see what we want to see, also the land of never. Never-lands can use the cultural heritage of our world, but it all depends on the author. Of course playing in never-lands must be based on understanding and agreement between writer and reader, we have to accept all the rules and it can’t be disturbed by any onomastic details: facts like Sam Gamgee eating potatoes in Middle Earth – world of obvious fantasy, or Ciri meeting Knights of the Cross in journey “through time and space”. Fantasy of this kind is also known as high fantasy or the epic fantasy. Other name is heroic fantasy, simply because epic is a heroic fight between good and evil.

“The Lord of the Rings” takes place in a pretty dark reality, where almost everyone is included to the battle. Dead languages fascinated Tolkien and he always wanted to recreate the world where they exist. He was trying to make a new mythology, which could be equal to ancient Greece myths or Scandinavian legends. Sony’s XCP copy-protected CD’s install a software on your computer that hides files, and is virtually uninstall able by any normal means. Hackers took advantage these hidden files and made a virus that disguises themselves as these Sony files but are actually back doors on your computer. Because they use Sony’s XCP software already installed on your system, which you cannot uninstall, they go virtually undetected by any virus detector. (Ward, 2005). But before their plan can succeed, they will have to outrun helicopters, survive shootouts and face down drunken Trailer Park Supervisor Mr. Lahey and his cheeseburger-loving assistant Randy in a deadly game of Sunnyvale Chicken.

Clattenburg confesses: “Early on[…the reaction was not good. Most industry people couldn’t get past the antiproduction-value look and ribald humour.” TPB also sparked debate over the exploitative representation of stereotypical вЂ?white trash’ on television. In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, University of Calgary communications and culture professor Bart Beaty lambasted the show as making fun of an underprivileged and marginalized segment of society. “That sort of thing used to be centred around racial issues. Now we get around this by making it about white populations rather than about native or black populations. But it’s still about laughing at the poor.” Mike Smith retorts by defending the show’s ultimate morality: “[Ricky] doesn’t make the best decisions, but he’s trying to do the right thin. There’s a lot of humanity in Trailer Park Boys. It’s not just a bunch of crazies running around swearing and firing guns at each other.” Wells adds: “People say we’re making fun of trailer parks, but it’s the exact opposite […] In many ways [Ricky and Julian] are better than most people in the real world. The equation of TPB is similar to that typified by episodic television conventions: the characters possess and exhibit obvious, definable —often mono-dimensional— traits which viewers grow to identify and anticipate. A space (the park) is defined, within which these characters will interact; as elements are added into this space, the characters respond according to their previously defined characteristics. For example, when Mr. Lahey has Ricky’s father arrested for disability fraud, the question for an audience is not whether Ricky will be angry, but how angry, and indeed, and what various articles will be damaged —and expletives employed in consequence.

But for this investigation, the veritable question remains: why are the characters —particularly Ricky and Julian— programmed with these specific characteristics in the first place? And why, though the pair is implanted with a handful of redeemable qualities, are they destined for perennial failure; each season ending with their return to prison? These questions can be answered by taking quick stock of the �Hoser’ archetype in English Canadian cinema, thus tracing how the historical tenets of the male protagonist have crept into this contemporary incarnation.

This discourse of cinematic representations of the male Canuck may appear to be no more than a bitter cup of Tim Horton’s coffee, but if we roll up the rim, there may be a silver lining. This incarnation of characters can not easily be reduced to a product of our film industry’s inadequacy in the face of the big American brother and its culture machine; there is something more important at work. The paradoxically engendering nature of the series lies in its militant opposition to the standards of American film and television production. Coupled with the influence of the depressing duos of historical hoserdom, is the desire to take possession of something rightfully belonging to the Canadian experience, negative or not.

The anti-social, indeed violent nature of TPB and its characters may be interpreted as a typically Canadian reaction to American cultural hegemony. It is not active, but rather, an indirect attempt to assert a unique cultural manifestation into the marketplace historically dominated by American corporatists and their generic products. Recently, Canada has given the undiplomatic finger to our American cousins through our relaxed marijuana laws, and the legalization of same-sex unions, despite repeated political pressure from Conservative government representatives. Let us observe that the themes of the show include habitual criminality, addiction and homosexuality, garnished with a vernacular of profanity; themes that brashly oppose all that are traditionally deemed appropriate for American audiences. It may be argued that the popularity of TPB both domestically and internationally negates the failure of the characters themselves. In essence, our industry has emerged triumphant in the marketplace while resting on the shoulders of hosers.

In addition to its inverted family value system, TPB has comparatively far less interest in the subversion of cinematic representation by corporate interests. All of the commodities consumed on-screen are deliberately obscured, signaling the show’s non-alignment with a policy of product placement exercised by many of its American contemporaries. There is a growing disparity between the lifestyle portrayed on television (i.e. Friends, The Sopranos, Sex and the City) and the lifestyle affordable to the average viewer. But TPB resists this trend; although the characters are consumers, their products of choice are chiefly illegal, or at least condemnable by U.S. production standards. In terms of the representation of bodily features, Ricky, Julian and Bubbles truly personify a more realistic physicality than the flawless skin, freshly cut hair and chiseled abdominal sections of Joey and Ross. TPB represents a departure from the culture of

-tween films, in which the show’s own production and aesthetic are more like preppy, adolescent models compared to the actual, serious, serious, real world of American reality. And there is no doubt that the U.S.’s most successful franchise has been its own, and thus perhaps its most sincere, project in its long history.

The show’s most notable commercial success has been at least partially due to its success. In 2006, the series aired as a small four-episode, scripted television series called “The Big Family”. While the series drew largely from American, mainstream, child-directed culture, the show’s original audience consisted primarily of American kids who were attracted to these shows with an affinity for real-world reality TV. A group of the audience-base was divided on what it felt the show was depicting, while most of the show’s “good” characters remained American, even during the show’s high-fives to its main characters (Rick, Joey, Bubbles, and Ricky).

In the summer of 2007, Season 1 of the show screened on CBS. An audience sample came from the Washington DC area, along with the majority of the “America’s Great American Show” audience. The audience of fans also included actors who regularly voiced their sentiments regarding the show, who were largely unknown to the public. This fan base, and the popularity of “Lion Brand” fan art, were a significant factor in the show’s success. These fans also served as the center of attention surrounding the show as well as an important source of revenue to the show’s development. As such, the “Lion Brand” fan art represents the show’s first official and widespread acceptance as a show.[2]

because of its lack of rain. The story takes place during the late 1930s when the country

from their homes because they failed to pay the bank their loan payments to the Shawnee

Land and Cattle Company.

On their journey, the Joads ran into a returning migrant from California who tells

them that the handbill they have looking for 800 pickers is a bunch of hogwash. Hed

rather starve in Oklahoma then starve in California. The migrant scolds them on their

naivety saying “Now, how many of you all got them handbills?(The men respond that

they all have them) There you are, same yellow handbill. 800 Pickers Wanted. All right,

the man wants 800 men, so he prints 5,000 handbills and maybe 20,000 people see em.

And maybe two or three thousand people start West on account of that handbill. Two or

three thousand people that are crazy with worry headin out for 800 jobs. Now does that

make sense?” He tells them that the growers are exploiting them, causing a surplus of

workers to drive down labor costs according to supply and demand. The significance of

his role in the movie, is that he lets the Joads know everything they are moving West

for is false. Their journey is based on a lie, and the grass isnt greener on the other side.

While stopping for gas, Mr. Joad heads into the diner to buy a loaf of bread. Mr.

Joad is a nickel short of the 15 cents that the bread cost, and against the waitresses

opinion the chef tells her to sell it to him for a dime. Not wanting charity, Mr. Joad tells

them to cut a nickel worth of bread off, but the chef refuses and makes him take it. The

Joad children stare in wonder at some of the candy in the diner, and the waitress out of

the goodness of your heart sold it to Mr. Joad for a penny rather then the dime it was

worth. Upon seeing the waitresses good will, two truckers eating at the diner leave the

waitress a generous tip. A little further up the road, the family is stopped at a checkpoint

by two policeman wanting to search their truck for any fruits or vegetables to prevent the

spread of rodents into the West. Though revealed later the grandmother was actually

dead at this point, Mrs. Joad tells the cops that her mother is ailing and must see a doctor.

The police immediately let them through and tell them where they can find a doctor.

Mrs. Joad knew that if the police saw the grandmother was dead that they would make

them turn around and head back to Oklahoma. These good deeds were symbolic of the

common good in people during the hard times of the depression. People helped those in

The band created in 1971 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan used cellos and violins to create a classical sound. Although Roy Wood left shortly after their first record was released. The idea came about when Jeff Lynne said to Roy Wood, “What if we had a band with strings- real strings?” (Wild 9) They were in The Move at the time and decided to create a band on the side. The third important member of ELO was Richard Tandy. Tandy was born on March 26, 1948 in Birmingham, U.K. At Moseley Grammar School he had been taught to play bass and guitar. I. Signs of Deception

Once you realize that you’re being lied to, should you confront the liar immediately? Usually not. The best

approach is to note the fact in your mind and continue with the conversation, trying to extract more information.

Once you confront someone who has lied to you, the tone of the conversation changes and gathering additional facts

While Taxi Driver is still an early chapter in a series of great stories, it is a novel that has become a popular genre fiction in New York City, with new writers and artists sharing their work in its wake.

At the beginning of the series, writer Kevin Fenton describes how he decided to write a novel about Taxi Driver, a very different city at that time. He notes that Taxi Driver will be the second novel in the series where he writes a new story that is meant to tell the story of an early city, as well as a personal trip to see the city, as it were in its life in Taxi Driver. The new, more unique city of Taxi Driver feels a bit more alive and more human while living, as it is very similar to what happened to the other original novels in the series. What makes this story interesting for me and makes sense is that the most well written city of Taxi Driver in New York City has yet to be found. This brings some interesting questions about what would happen to Taxi Driver if people had discovered it and what this country would look like in a few decades.

The novel “City of Taxi Driver” was published in 1978 under the name ” Taxi Driver “. Fenton describes how he made a selection for the title of the first book and was the author. That year the story was first reported in the New York Times Magazine. By 1978 the book was reissued in seven different editions during this four-year period, but in 1978 the book began to look like a series of books: it was finally published in 1978 under the name ” City of Taxi Driver ” or just ” City of Taxi Driver “, which was the title of the novel. Some of the more interesting changes in Taxi Driver were many, including the addition of the book title, new streets, updated maps and locations, increased signage, more life-like architecture of the city, and more street signs, and the inclusion of more and more street people as part of the new version of the story. The original novel is now available for purchase on Amazon in ebook form.

The story is about two young men (a driver, a businessman and an attorney) who are searching for a new city of their own, but the search turns into a long journey to see more of their city. At a bus stop, one of these two men decides to drive off on a street bus to investigate the town of Taxi Driver. Soon, they encounter a number of pedestrians. In addition to driving a pedestrian from their destination to an unknown city, the two men encounter the two police officers who patrol in the hopes of stopping them. When the police officers appear on the scene, they find that they are in an abandoned building. The driver attempts to escape them, but the building he has left behind causes him to end up there with someone he thought might kidnap him.

The character of Travis Bickle roams the nights in his taxi cab, and witnesses all of this “open sewer”, loathing the people who live within its realm. Travis is a complex character in his hate for the world in which he works. The streets on which he works are the same streets that he makes his living, and pays his rent, buys his booze, and eventually buys his guns. He is a victim of the world that he hates, because it is the only world he knows. This is viewed best in the scene where Travis takes Betsy to the “movies”.

When Travis was in the cafй with Betsy earlier in the film, it would be hard to say that there was really anything to odd about it. But later on in the film, on Travis and Betsys second date, things become clear that Travis has a different understanding of what is socially acceptable. Travis cant seem to understand why Betsy doesnt want to go see the pornographic movie that he has taken her to. He thinks that this is a place where couples go, and seems to think that its a decent place to go on a date. There is something alluring about Traviss naivete, something comical, and maybe a little ironic. Travis isnt naпve to the world of drugs, sex, and smut; Travis is naпve to the world of decency, where the majority of society attempts to dwell.

As Traviss taxi drives down the road, the viewer gets the chance to view the streets through the eyes of Travis. You see things through the windshield and rearview mirrors, all luminescent in the neon glow of the night. The streets are filled with different sorts; prostitutes on the street corners, pimps in the cafes, and homeless people wandering through the mess aimlessly. As film critic Leonard Quart puts it

“The city seen through Travis windshield and rear view mirror is an iridescent cascade of neon and street lights, and the chaotic life on the streets–the shadows and shapes that inhabit them–are just as exhilarating as they are threatening.”

This is where Travis must live, and he hates it. Travis thinks he wants to live a normal life, and get out of the hell he lives in, but not quite sure how to go about getting out of this hell. Travis is also moderately insane but, nevertheless he devises a plan to save the young prostitute, Iris, and himself from his taxi cab prison. The beauty of this film climaxes when Travis goes to free Iris from the evil clutches of her pimp, Sport. When Travis approaches Sport, a second time, a question arises, “Why is Travis paying this grotesque man another visit?” but, then all is made clear when Travis draws his pistol and attempts to liberate Iris from her prison.

The entire scene gives a strange feeling of redemption. Travis has redeemed himself from the world that he lived in by ridding it of this evil and freeing something that has potential to become something very beautiful. This redeeming feeling is reinforced when Scorseses extreme overhead angle is shot, frozen, and begins to retrace the path of blood and bodies that Travis has defeated to save his damsel in distress, his Rapunzel, Iris.

The film ends with Travis, a hero for the day, returning to his job as a cabbie. One cant help but wonder is this outcome what

Since neither had been in a fight before, each stood to gain a great deal of knowledge of his identity. The term “fight” does not necessarily refer only to fisticuffs. The concept of the “fight” is more accurately represented by any kind of conflict. The club and Tyler are created to fulfill Jacks inner need to substantiate his masculinity, to rebel against consumer culture, to further a class conflict, to feel real pain, and to cope with anonymity.

Tyler complains that they are part of a generation of men raised by women. They seem to be wrapped up in matters such as interior design and fashion rather than the primal hunter/gatherer basis of masculinity. The club accomplishes Jacks need to break away from such a helpless kind of feminine state. The loss of masculinity is also physically manifest in the castrated men of the testicular cancer support group. In a way Jack belonged there as much as the rest of them, because he too had been emasculated much to the same degree as many of the men who had been physically separated from their manhood. By engaging in the primal violence of the fight club, the men could get a piece of that back. They wore their battle scars with pride, and it gave them a new sense of empowerment, and a new, more forward and domineering attitude.

The club and Project Mayhem were also forums for rebellion against consumer culture. The group targeted corporations and retailers who were selling a lifestyle that they were trying to destroy. The fact that these establishments were selling lifestyles at all was the inherent problem. It all reverts back to the line that Tyler says regarding the things you own owning you. Identity through ownership and material possessions is not identity at all. These acts of vandalism were also a rejection of the class culture that the characters of the film lived in. The main purpose for demolishing the credit card firms was to ensure that the debt records would be erased, and everyone would be at the same place, zero. Their act would eliminate the class structure because everyone would be starting over, no matter how well off the people may have been.

The club also functioned to reinforce identity and give the men the feeling of being alive by its ability to make the fighters feel “real” pain. Since many of the men had been desensitized by the class conflicts or consumer culture, or sheltered existence that they had known all their lives, they had a need to feel real physical pain. The fight club offered the release of pure, unadulterated pain, without emotional repercussion. Most of the men had almost been rendered non-existent in the busy world, but they embraced their anonymity and used names less and less, until their anonymity afforded them the ability to go out and commit random vandalistic or violent acts without feeling individually responsible. They took on a mob mentality, and used their new sense of identity as a part of the whole to cope with this anonymity and feel more like men.

The effects of modernity, such as these class conflicts, and consumer cultures, all contributed to the lack of masculinity that fueled this group to prove their worth as men. It is true that modernity has serious debilitating effects, and it nearly sucked

Introduction

The term altruism is an ideological concept. Britannica Concise Encyclopedia defines it as the “ethical theory that regards the good of others as the end of moral action” (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia, 2006). It refers to pro-social behaviour such as giving to people who are poor or helping your neighbour buy groceries. The definition of the term, however, poses for us problems in practicality. Philosophers and researchers are divided in the definition of the term itself. Is pure altruism defined simply by acts of seemingly altruistic behaviour or by intent? Is it possible for people humanely speaking to behave altruistically purely for the sake of others? Or are they doing so because of other motivations? Does helping your neighbour buy groceries for the sake of improving your relationship with him count as pure altruistic behaviour?

Various other researchers have used different perspectives to explain altruistic behaviour. One side of the coin asserts the possibility of pure altruism while the others reject it. Typically, researchers have based their research on the motivations behind altruistic behaviour as a standard of measure.

Batson (1997) supported the hypothesis of empathy-altruism in support of the possibility of pure altruism. The empathy-altruism hypothesis defines pure altruistic action as empathetic concern for another which is brought about by feelings of “compassion tenderness, sotfheartedness, and sympathy” (cited in Cialdina et al, 1997, p 481).

Cialdini (1997) and his colleagues however questioned the validity of the empathy-altruism hypothesis. They argued that empathy-altruism occurs only when the person providing help sees a part of him or herself in the person he or she is helping. Therefore, through perspective taking, the person providing help may see helping the other person as promoting a sense of oneness to oneself, which denounces the possibility of empathy-altruism hypothesis as a definition of pure altruism (Cialdini et al, 1997).

On a broader psychological perspective, motivations induced by a sense of oneness with self as suggest by Cialdini, fit into the category of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in the self-actualisation category. Coon (2006) states the need for wholeness (unity), justice (fairness), goodness (benevolence) and meaningfulness (values) as meta-needs in the self-actualisation category. The question I choose to investigate was if beans needed soil to grow and if a bean which was soaked in water will grow faster than one that was not.

The first step was to soak several dry beans in water overnight. Put four soaked beans on a wet piece of paper toweling and four dry beans on a piece of wet paper toweling. Then I labeled two plastic cups with the start date and soaked or dry, and put the toweling and beans in the appropriate cup and placed them on the windowsill. Everyday I checked the moisture level of the toweling and added water if needed. In the middle of the second week I noticed mold forming on three of my dry beans. I choose to discard of those beans. By the beginning of the third week someone suggested keeping the beans in an open Ziploc bag to keep moisture on the toweling so I switched. At the end of my inquiry I saw that neither the soaked nor the dry beans had extensive growth and I couldn’t understand why. Below I have charted my observations and then gave possible explanations as to why this did not work properly.

In fact, the makers of the first intelligence tests did not begin with a precise idea of what they wanted to measure. Finally, the definition says very little about the specific nature of intelligence.

Whenever scientists are asked to define intelligence in terms of what causes it or what it actually is, almost every scientist comes up with a different definition. For example, in 1921 an academic journal asked 14 prominent psychologists and educators to define intelligence. The journal received 14 different definitions, although many experts emphasized the ability to learn from experience and the ability to adapt to one’s environment. In 1986 researchers repeated the experiment by asking 25 experts for their definition of intelligence. The researchers received many different definitions: general adaptability to new problems in life; ability to engage in abstract thinking; adjustment to the environment; capacity for knowledge and knowledge possessed; general capacity for independence, originality, and productiveness in thinking; capacity to acquire capacity; apprehension of relevant relationships; ability to judge, to understand, and to reason; deduction of relationships; and innate, general cognitive ability.

People in the general population have somewhat different conceptions of intelligence than do most experts. Laypersons and the popular press tend to emphasize cleverness, common sense, practical problem solving ability, verbal ability, and interest in learning. In addition, many people think social competence is an important component of intelligence.

Most intelligence researchers define intelligence as what is measured by intelligence tests, but some scholars argue that this definition is inadequate and that intelligence is whatever abilities are valued by one’s culture. According to this perspective, conceptions of intelligence vary from culture to culture. For example, North Americans often associate verbal and mathematical skills with intelligence, but some seafaring cultures in the islands of the South Pacific view spatial memory and navigational skills as markers of intelligence. Those who believe intelligence is culturally relative dispute the idea that any one test could fairly measure intelligence across different cultures. Others, however, view intelligence as a basic cognitive ability independent of culture.

In a 2012 study, a diverse group of 23 researchers assessed the validity of IQ tests using questionnaires with the ability-to-talk standard (RTSQ) test and various test-taker and interviewer questions, as well as with another question, the IQ Questionnaire of Ability to Know (QQU), to assess the validity of the standard test. These results provide insight into the evolution of the RTSQ test, which has received a number of improvements since the 1940s. More recent studies have compared several aspects of RTSQ and QQU, including those assessed by a different set of questions. Both measures have been linked to different behavioral responses and to different biological mechanisms. However, studies have suggested that a single study, conducted in different locations over a period of time, may not reliably test whether different groups are more likely to do or say exactly what it means when they’re talking to a “new-born.” As such, a wide range of studies of RTSQ, QQU, and other measures do not yet have all of the answers that they should—so in this paper we present a systematic analysis of 10 to 20% of all of the RTSQ-based IQ measures in the world. In Intelligence Reframed, Gardner states,

Both of the populations I was working with were clueing me into the same message: that the human mind is better thought of as a series of relatively separate faculties, with only loose and non-predictable relations with one another, than as a single, all-purpose machine that performs steadily at a certain horsepower, independent of content and context. Gardner concluded from his work with these two populations that strength in one area of performance did not reliably predict comparable strength in another area. The film is an excellent example of the issues involving interpersonal communication and how they play a part in either making or breaking our relationships. Identity perception, self-Disclosure, and relationships are the aspects that this essay will focus on and attempt to elucidate. Despite Will’s brilliance he was a poor communicator, his past experiences made it difficult for him to let anyone see past his presenting self. As a result , it was nearly impossible for anyone to get close to him.

The concept of identity perception plays a substantial role in the film Good Will Hunting . The private self also referred to as the perceived self is a reflection of the self-concept, the person we believe ourselves to be in times of honest self-examination (Adler,72). Will’s private self is just that, private. He had a painful childhood and as a result he buries his past deep in the back of his mind, to the point where he doesn’t even acknowledge it. As a child Will was an abandoned orphan who had been physically abused by his foster parents. One can assume this does not set a good precedent for high self-worth. He was deserted by the people who were supposed to love him the most and as a result this Wills reflected-appraisal affects every aspect of his life and set the tone for his relationships. Reflected appraisal is a process in which each of us develops a self-concept that reflects the way others see us (Adler, 51).Will used his genius and sharp wit to hide his vulnerability and pushed away anyone who tried to love him for fear they would discard him like his parents did. His presenting self was the safeguard to his private self. Will was very much aware of his gift and his enormous potential but shunned it like some burden, or at least that’s what he wanted others to believe. He often told Sean Maguire, his shrink with whom he had developed a bond, that his gift was something he didn’t ask for, and he’d be perfectly fine working an honorable blue-collar job with his buddies. Despite his assertion regarding his gift as an aggravation Will’s actions contradict, for he is asked why he just so happened to get a custodial job in the world’s foremost institute for technology, M.I.T if he wanted nothing to do with his genius. Maguire sees behind Will’s visage, he realizes Will is a wounded soul who really knows nothing about life for he hasn’t experienced it, it is so much more that what he read in a book. It is hard to say what Will should have done for he had a difficult past one that most cannot relate too, or have any idea what it may be like to live it. However, If Will had been a little more open to the people who wanted to love him he would have been much happier. In his quest to never be hurt he was headed for a life where he would never be loved. His thoughts were becoming a self-fulfilling prophesy; where one’s expectations of an event make that event more likely to occur (Adler, 65). Had Will been honest with himself and more willing to face his demons, he would have been much better off in his relationships and self-concept.

Will has four significant relationships throughout the film each predicated on different reasons for forming relationship. His relationship with Gerald Lambeau, Sean Maguire, His friends, and Skyla are vastly different from each other. Gerald Lambeau and Sean Maguire are both elder to Will, and initially was very guarded towards them. It seems that Will viewed these men more as old-timers than potential mentors. I just came to this with a message. You may no surprise to find out that this whole ‘community’ in Aurora is a hive mind, which is one I wish I could change. I did run errands, and would love more volunteers to help find people that can help out. A human eye is a type of retina, which allows us to see things like lights, smells, sound and so on. The Alpha-Eyes survey, first used in the 1930s, was based on the Otis Scale. And when the scale was introduced, in 1963, it was used as the test for whether anyone was a competent and trustworthy leader, and how important it was to a person who understood his or her place in society.

For the last 18 years, the Army has used the measure to evaluate teachers, teachers of history, women’s education, young men’s and women’s sports teams, athletic clubs, professional sports teams, and military bases. But now it has adopted a broader, more sophisticated rating system, and the military has developed data sets that can better evaluate all sorts of factors, such as gender, education, ethnicity, occupation, and sex.

I agree. I agree that the question of how a girl’s experience of social awkwardness influences her perceptions of herself or their relationship and how a woman’s internal conflict with her husband affect them can also influence her. However, these changes in social awkwardness or partner behavior, that affect girls as a whole, are often very long-lasting, and not only have I felt this way about my own daughters since I first became a little girl, but I still feel this way more often than many. Thus I see many more girls who have experienced partner-specific difficulties than they should, having to face them themselves in a way that is much more intimate than they had before and that takes time and energy. This makes me wonder with whom this behavior is the main cause, why and how it affects the girls I know, and who needs to learn about it and what it is all about. Perhaps it is because girls are so dependent on the “sisterhood” of each parent, so it just isn’t as intimate as a parent who is trying to see her daughter in a “true or honest” way. For example, I also feel much more likely than parents to give in to a desire and a negative social order or to let some aspect of their child’s life feel unwelcome because they may feel they have too much influence in their daughter’s internal conflict with their mother. The fact remains that my understanding of self and how others view me changes in ways that are largely unconscious but cause me pain rather than gain it. As we have noted before, the “Department of Higher Education” was formed on March 11, 2015, under Executive Order No. 1022 (see the Department of Education’s response to the May 2013 letter and response to the Pennsylvania inquiry). Thus, school systems need to make clear that in addition to reporting, such disciplinary or litigation-type cases against sexual assault victims, schools must first seek to make a specific statement of a sexual or similar offense. As we noted in the March 2011 meeting of the NAAS and Pennsylvania inquiry, the most important factors in determining who has filed such a person’s complaint for school discipline include the individual’s religious, moral, or moral judgment that suggests sexual assault is a serious or prolonged disturbance.

We believe that there should be a system to make explicit any kind of statements about what constitutes a serious or prolonged disturbance, even if it implies that there’s a religious or moral judgment that suggests sexual assault is a serious or prolonged disturbance (see §§10.4, “Statement of Arousing as a Serious or Severely Conducted Sexual Offender”).
