Field Experience Interview Discipline Process

Important policies, guidelines, and procedures are mandated concerning the discipline of students who receive special education services. The staff, parents, district and campus administration, and related service providers may all be involved in the decision making process regarding consequences for actions that may be related to the disability. There are procedural processes involved in determining the following: manifestation hearings, the need to conduct a functional behavioral assessment (FBA), and the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIP). IEP team members must also document decisions regarding suspension, expulsion, or a need for a change of placement. Administrators, lead teachers, and other key special education staff are responsible for implementing the policies and disciplinary regulations. Failure to comply with these important regulations can place these individuals and the district in a liable situation.
Allocate at least 2 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Interview two of the following: a principal; assistant principal; administrator; lead special education teacher; school psychologist, or behavior interventionist/coach.
Discuss the role in which the interviewee plays regarding the following:

In 250-500 words, summarize your interviews and reflect upon professional practices related to legal and ethical discipline for students with disabilities. Creating change or attempting to improve an organization often requires workers to now operate outside of their comfort zones, as they must think differently, learn new ways of completing tasks, and feel uncertain or fearful of what may come next as well as how well they are now performing. Beginning to understand effective leadership for successful organizational change is a second step toward operating a successful organization. The notion of Blue Ribbon schools or schools of substantial improvement, while also obtaining a high level of student performance is an example of successful organizational change within education.
Part I: Use the assigned readings for the course as well as additional applicable scholarly sources, describe, in sufficient detail, supportive references that cite how you might improve an organization using the four perceptual roles of structure, human resources, politics, and symbols. Be sure to describe these four concepts as a framework to facilitate organizational improvement.
Part II: Interview a leader, different from the one interviewed for assignment 6, you believe to have effectively improved an organization within an educational setting of interest regarding what he/she believes is needed for effective organizational improvement. Compare and contrast the results of this interview with your description in Part I of the assignment. Be sure to indicate similarities, differences, and what surprised you as a result of completing this assignment. The essence of this assignment involves organizational change or how to improve an organization. Be sure to submit both your written interview questions and written notes from your interviewee’s responses.
