In the first section of the poem, Frost explains the appearance of the birches. Frost wants to believe that the branches of the birches bend and sway because of a boy swinging on them. However, Frost suggests that repeated ice storms are what bend the branches. Frost compares the breaking away of the ice from the trees to the “dome of heaven” shattering (Line 13). This could be a metaphor for life using imagery. The ice can symbolize difficult times that come in life, while the ice breaking away may represent renewed hope for the future. Initially, the forest scene describes, “crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow crust– Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away” (10-12). The words “shattering and avalanching” (11) give the feeling of calamity and perhaps fear or sorrow. A disturbance in the universe is suggested by the “heaps of broken glass” (12) that make it seem as if “the inner dome of heaven had fallen” (13). One of the first aspects of controversy is the materialistic way of life that is constantly portrayed by MTV. For example, everything shown in My Sweet Sixteen is about bigger and better things. They showcase the latest and most high scaled cars on the program Pimp My Ride, the largest houses on MTV Cribs, and the biggest “bling” is flaunted in the mainstream hip-hop music videos. This obsession is clearly against the teachings and principles of the Bible in Matthew. It states in chapter 6 verses 19 through 21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NIV Bible) This pattern is unacceptable and collides with God’s teachings about how wealth should be used to further His kingdom. Therefore, if you were to speak like a Christian, you would be deemed blasphemous, and the Bible wouldn’t teach the truth. This was an anti-Christian mindset, which often became more widespread as religious authorities started to ask questions of church authority.

As you grow up, you find yourself reading a book (known in the church as a hymn book) and having a big, dark conscience. You realize that the only way to maintain your identity is to pray the truth.
