Target opened its Canadian subsidiary by acquiring several Zellers locations from the Hudson Bay Company in the year 2011. The company opened its initial stores in Canada in 2013, and by 2015 it was operating in 133 locations throughout Canada. However, the companys expansion into the Canadian market was threatened by another firm that claimed to own the rights to Target trademark. This Canadian company, Target Apparel, deals with clothes and it registered its trademark in 1981. Fortunately, the two companies reached an agreement, after lengthy litigation procedures, to use the trademark in Canada. In January 2010, Target announced its plans to expand to the Canadian market. After this announcement, Target moved to purchase leaseholds of about 200 Zellers stores. Under the lease agreement, Zellers was to sublease the premises, and continue to operate them as their locations until March 2013. Nevertheless, less than two years after launching its operations in Canada, Target announced the closure of all its Canadian stores. This was after the company determined that they would not operate profitably in this market in the foreseeable future.

The companys failure to succeed in Canada has been attributed to an extremely ambitious launch, which entailed the launch of more than 120 stores during the first year, and issues with inventory control systems that were blamed for leaving the shelves empty. The most surprising fact about Targets misadventure in a new international market is not that it encountered unanticipated problems, rather, it is the fact that it did not re-think on attempting to fix these problems. Therefore, Target should have re-engineered its operating strategies in the new market instead of exiting the market. Targets CEOs statement that the companys exit from Canada will allow the focus of resources on the US market can be regarded as a good strategy. Despite the company recovering from an immense data breach that occurred during the holiday quarter in 2003, the companys comparable sales in the US during the last quarter would possibly rise 3% from its initial 2% forecast. This strategy is viable as it would ensure that Target continues to grow in the United States through expanding its smaller format stores, which include those located in big cities. Nevertheless, the failure in Canada introduces serious doubts concerning the retailers prospect for long-term growth and expansion. Also, if the company needs to grow their and cement their market share in the United States, it must re-consider its sourcing and supply chain strategies to alleviate the possibility of stock interruptions, leaving empty shelves and, therefore, dissatisfying its customers (Young, 2010). Thus, Target should be careful in the formulation of its operation strategies if it needs to attain more growth in the US market.

In comparison to other retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target faces immense competition in the US and also in the international market. When considering global markets, Target should formulate and implement appropriate strategies, some of which it can learn from Wal-Mart. After failing in Canada, Target should not entirely give up on the expansion to global markets. In fact, it should concentrate on other new markets that other huge retailers have not yet ventured. For instance, it may focus on markets located in developing countries and apply appropriate entrance strategies to ensure the venture becomes a success. One mistake that they should avoid is biting off more than they can chew by opening up many stores simultaneously. Instead, when venturing a new international market, Target should open up a few stores at strategic locations to build brand loyalty prior to fully exploring the market (Root, 2009).

Additionally, to ensure that they use an appropriate market format, Target has to refine its operation, the supply chain, the technology used, and to conduct intensive training of their store teams. Moreover, the companys management should also observe how Wal-Mart ventured successfully into the Canadian market. Therefore, it should also focus on cutting the costs of entering a new market to avoid failing. For instance, when entering Canada, Wal-Mart incurred a cost of $335 million to purchase 122 stores belonging to Woolco. Comparing this amount to Targets $1.8 billion acquisition of 220 locations, it can be noticed that Target acquired many stores than it could manage. This gave the executives the dual responsibility of launching a retailer in a new market, while at the same time shopping around for its excess locations. In fact, Target ended up selling 40 of this locations to its competitor, Wal-Mart. Therefore, Target has to consider re-thinking new strategies such as cost leadership and the use of information technology in their supply chain to ensure success in any new market.

Clinical Teaching and Learning in Midwifery and Women’s Health

Teaching in a school is based on the philosophy that the students will learn well through a supported clinical experience. I tend to believe that the students learn better when encouraged to undertake an active perspective and approach towards acquiring clinical experiences and supported to transfer the training to improving their clinical knowledge. The study of womens health requires the introduction of obstetrics and gynecology course to the students. These courses encourage the clinical students to embrace a wide perspective and view on womens health. The primary aim is to produce a clinical graduate who possess the essential knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to provide appropriate, basic, sensitive and collaborative medical care to women with a range of health, illness and disease expositions.

The Teaching Structure

In order to succeed in my teaching objectives which are: to increase the students knowledge in nursing, to assist them in becoming critical and in-depth learners and to motivate them to partake their course seriously, I must first engage them. To engage, I must motivate them with information, demonstration style, and as a character. Personally, I attempt to be lively while in class, exciting, open, and accessible. For instance, I use narratives from my own medical experience to illustrate notions in gynecology and obstetrics. Whenever I lecture on women health, I will describe my wife and daughter as a demonstration of how women health matters a lot. I also try to get across the vital simplicity of veracity; moreover, I tend to think as a nursing profession we have a greater responsibility to ensure that the societys health issues are well taken care of.

As to delivering information, I try to demonstrate concepts that I find tremendously interesting in that the students will find it digestible and understandable. Gynecology and obstetrics are a nine-week unit in a nursing class. Twenty to twenty five students spend the whole term at the school. I usually give the students a comprehensive unit guidebook, and I encourage them to attend a 5-day orientation program before commencing a structured classroom and clinical timetable. At the middle of each academic day I bring the students together for one to one and a half hours of structured learning using problem-based learning techniques, clinical skill workshops, class lectures which I administer myself and case-based learning. During the nine weeks, the students also attend three reflective small groups tutorials to facilitate discussion and reflection of crucial incidents, and also two lectures on Asians Women Health. The structured timetable incorporates hypothetical contacts of 8 hours a week and a clinical contact of between 24 and 32 hours a week.

I always emphasize on the use of both summative and formative assessment methods. All the students have to complete a ward workbook so as to record their clinical experiences and also to document their reflections of their experiences through a case study. I found myself enjoying the clinical experience and hospital life in a way that

I had always hoped to, but had not yet found. As I became aware of this phenomenon, I noticed something else which I had only ever experienced glimpses of, the evolution of my own professional persona as a nurse. The difference between this semester and others, due to the different structures, it was easy to get caught up by what I perceived other peoples expectations of me were. In the absence of this pressure, I was able to redesign my behavior with patients, and over the 9 weeks this built up enough of its own momentum to challenge previous habits I had made regarding my bedside manner.

Throughout the period of time I have been in this university, I have gained and developed my clinical skills, improved my medical knowledge as well as exploring my own individual competence and abilities in the vast contexts of clinical medicine and human interaction. The university takes part in the Women’s Health National Collaborative Core Curriculum which came from two contrasting trends in undergraduate medical education: the ever-expanding capacity of technical and scientific knowledge and a decrease in time available for education. The National Women’s Health Core clearly describes the learning results which undergraduate nursing students are expected to achieve. Moreover, to the expertise of teaching staff from the Medical Schools in question, the project has consulted with scholars, community groups, experts in educational design and boards of authorization and accreditation.

Hereafter, the National Core Curriculum in Women’s Health has been erected with reference to specialized and community prospects of the undistinguishable, competent junior nurse who is adequately equipped both for entering early postgraduate clinical drill and for continuing life-long learning. The persistence on problem-based learning seeks to inspire opportunity for relevant, context-based learning programs for students to become proficient practitioners in women’s health. Students Results

The assessment strategies since I started teaching have been stable with some negligible changes to tools and the allocation of marks for continuous assessment. The end of year exam is worth 60% of the overall mark and the remaining 40% is for six pieces of continuous assessment during the term. As can be seen in the following table, distribution of marks has been constant over the past four years and the students performing at a satisfactory level. The possible drawback of the continuous assessment to discriminate has been considered. Students with continuous assessment marks around 65% do align with students who have lower exam results. Only a small number of students have repeated a year. These students have failed in more than one unit; the students who have needed to sit a supplementary examination have passed well on reexamination. (See Appendix 1)

At the university, the curriculum content and delivery is reviewed at the end of the academic year at a meeting of the academic teaching staff. The following is an outline of reviews and events that contribute to the curriculum review and development in the university.

Evidence of interaction between teaching and research project

Whenever I do a research with my students, it is always my wish that the research is published. For instance, we conducted a study to assess the effects of introducing an educational program that teaches nursing students how to approach taking pertinent and sensitive gynecological histories and to do pelvic examinations with the use of a work out with healthy women from the community. The results of the program were assessed by a comparison of nursing student observations of self-assurance, proficiency, and anxiety.The mean number of pelvic inspections that were performed during their course both before and after the introduction of the program and results of students continuous and summative assessment were given.

The results indicated that the pelvic examination clinic educational program has been positively evaluated by students and participating women and resulted in a significant improvement in the amount of pelvic examination experiences that nursing undergraduates obtain. This was finally published but after going through various setbacks here and there. This project represents my ethos that innovative educational programs should be assessed thoroughly, and the results published in international literatures, whenever possible. Another medium in which I guide my nursing students is in reacting to their demonstrations in research area during lunches.

Each day at the university, one or two areas in gynecology and obstetrics hosts a lunch where scholars are availed an opportunity to demonstrate and showcase their work. When students present, two forms of feedback can be given, that is, questions or responses pertaining to the talk, and individual conventions following the talk about how one can better demonstrate material. I partake actively in the first form of feedback, for gynecology and at times other medical students. For the second form, I at times email scholars specific thoughts, insights and always welcome students who wish to get such advice. Such a training was dynamically done in my medical student department and I tend to think it is invaluable.

My priorities over the next three years include:

Conducting further research into my teaching programs to enhance learning outcomes
Ensuring a continuous cycle of assessments, reviews and planning of programs content and teaching techniques to enhance students learning experience
Conducting staff surveys to assess the students and staff perceptions and experiences of the teaching and learning programs for the field of nursing. Specifically gynecology and obstetrics.
Planning and execution of a teaching and learning program for the substantial increase of the numbers of nursing students. Integral to this strategy is my intention to maintain an emphasis on a highly structured academic and clinical programs to maximize student learning.
Exploration of opportunities to develop and promote inter-university education with an extension of learning and teaching into outlying hospitals and satellite campuses.
Reviewing and assessing opportunities that can contribute to meeting learning impacts of gynecology and obstetrics in other areas of clinical medicine courses.

Clinical Teaching and Learning in Midwifery and Women’s Health

Teaching in a school is based on the philosophy that the students will learn well through a supported clinical experience. I tend to believe that the students learn better when encouraged to undertake an active perspective and approach towards acquiring clinical experiences and supported to transfer the training to improving their clinical knowledge. For instance, I use narratives from my own medical experience to illustrate notions in gynecology and obstetrics. Whenever I lecture on women health, I will describe my wife and daughter as a demonstration of how women health matters a lot. I also try to get across the vital simplicity of veracity; moreover, I tend to think as a nursing profession we have a greater responsibility to ensure that the societys health issues are well taken care of.

As to delivering information, I try to demonstrate concepts that I find tremendously interesting in that the students will find it digestible and understandable. Gynecology and obstetrics are a nine-week unit in a nursing class. Twenty to twenty five students spend the whole term at the school. I usually give the students a comprehensive unit guidebook, and I encourage them to attend a 5-day orientation program before commencing a structured classroom and clinical timetable. At the middle of each academic day I bring the students together for one to one and a half hours of structured learning using problem-based learning techniques, clinical skill workshops, class lectures which I administer myself and case-based learning. During the nine weeks, the students also attend three reflective small groups tutorials to facilitate discussion and reflection of crucial incidents, and also two lectures on Asians Women Health. The structured timetable incorporates hypothetical contacts of 8 hours a week and a clinical contact of between 24 and 32 hours a week.

I always emphasize on the use of both summative and formative assessment methods. All the students have to complete a ward workbook so as to record their clinical experiences and also to document their reflections of their experiences through a case study. I have a feedback system, both formal and informal, from the clinical workstations in the hospitals to report on each students progress.

Hereafter, the National Core Curriculum in Women’s Health has been erected with reference to specialized and community prospects of the undistinguishable, competent junior nurse who is adequately equipped both for entering early postgraduate clinical drill and for continuing life-long learning. The persistence on problem-based learning seeks to inspire opportunity for relevant, context-based learning programs for students to become proficient practitioners in women’s health. Nevertheless, the Core remains silent on specific teaching and evaluation strategies, which are considered specific to individual institutes.

Students Results

The assessment strategies since I started teaching have been stable with some negligible changes to tools and the allocation of marks for continuous assessment. The end of year exam is worth 60% of the overall mark and the remaining 40% is for six pieces of continuous assessment during the term. As can be seen in the following table, distribution of marks has been constant over the past four years and the students performing at a satisfactory level. The possible drawback of the continuous assessment to discriminate has been considered. Students with continuous assessment marks around 65% do align with students who have lower exam results. Only a small number of students have repeated a year. These students have failed in more than one unit; the students who have needed to sit a supplementary examination have passed well on reexamination. (See Appendix 1)

 

Level of Curriculum Review and Development

At the university, the curriculum content and delivery is reviewed at the end of the academic year at a meeting of the academic teaching staff. The following is an outline of reviews and events that contribute to the curriculum review and development in the university.

Evidence of interaction between teaching and research project

Whenever I do a research with my students, it is always my wish that the research is published. For instance, we conducted a study to assess the effects of introducing an educational program that teaches nursing students how to approach taking pertinent and sensitive gynecological histories and to do pelvic examinations with the use of a work out with healthy women from the community. The results of the program were assessed by a comparison of nursing student observations of self-assurance, proficiency, and anxiety.The mean number of pelvic inspections that were performed during their course both before and after the introduction of the program and results of students continuous and summative assessment were given.

The results indicated that the pelvic examination clinic educational program has been positively evaluated by students and participating women and resulted in a significant improvement in the amount of pelvic examination experiences that nursing undergraduates obtain. This was finally published but after going through various setbacks here and there. This project represents my ethos that innovative educational programs should be assessed thoroughly, and the results published in international literatures, whenever possible. Another medium in which I guide my nursing students is in reacting to their demonstrations in research area during lunches.

Each day at the university, one or two areas in gynecology and obstetrics hosts a lunch where scholars are availed an opportunity to demonstrate and showcase their work. When students present, two forms of feedback can be given, that is, questions or responses pertaining to the talk, and individual conventions following the talk about how one can better demonstrate material. I partake actively in the first form of feedback, for gynecology and at times other medical students. For the second form, I at times email scholars specific thoughts, insights and always welcome students who wish to get such advice. Such a training was dynamically done in my medical student department and I tend to think it is invaluable.

My priorities over the next three years include:

Conducting further research into my teaching programs to enhance learning outcomes
Ensuring a continuous cycle of assessments, reviews and planning of programs content and teaching techniques to enhance students learning experience
Conducting staff surveys to assess the students and staff perceptions and experiences of the teaching and learning programs for the field of nursing. Specifically gynecology and obstetrics.
Planning and execution of a teaching and learning program for the substantial increase of the numbers of nursing students. Integral to this strategy is my intention to maintain an emphasis on a highly structured academic and clinical programs to maximize student learning.
Exploration of opportunities to develop and promote inter-university education with an extension of learning and teaching into outlying hospitals and satellite campuses.
Reviewing and assessing opportunities that can contribute to meeting learning impacts of gynecology and obstetrics in other areas of clinical medicine courses.
