Please read the following introduction and complete the following steps for your initial discussion post:
There are a number of methods for classifying theory in nursing. These include classification based on range/scope or abstractness (metatheory, grand, middle-range, or practice theory) and type or purpose of the theory (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or prescriptive).
For this week’s discussion post, address the following:
Identify one specific nursing theory that relates to your area of practice. Feel free to go to the Currents website or look in your textbook for multiple nursing theories to choose from http://currentnursing.com/nursing_theory/ (Links to an external site.)
Discuss the type of the selected nursing theory according to scope (meta-theory, grand, middle-range, or practice theory) and purpose (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or prescriptive).
Provide an example of how the selected nursing theory can be applied to your area of practice. The example should include core concepts of the theory and demonstrate its practical application.
Be sure to supplement your discussion with your personal and professional experiences.
Responses need to address all components of the question, demonstrate critical thinking and analysis, and include peer reviewed journal evidence to support the student’s position.
Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Article Critique: Findings of a Quantitative Study
Purpose, Criteria, Methods, and Results
What was the purpose of the study (research questions, purposes, and hypotheses)?
How was the sample obtained?
What inclusion or exclusion criteria were used?
Who from the sample actually participated or contributed data (demographic or clinical profile and dropout rate)?
What methods were used to collect data (e.g., sequence, timing, types of data, and measures)?
Was an intervention tested? If yes, how was the sample size determined? Were patients randomly assigned to treatment groups?
What are the main findings of the study?
Credibility

Answer the following questions as Yes, No, or Not Clear.

Is the study published in a source that required peer review?
*Did the data obtained and the analysis conducted answer the research question?
Were the measuring instruments reliable and valid?
*Were important extraneous variables and bias controlled?
*If an intervention was tested, answer the following five questions:
Were participants randomly assigned to groups and were the two groups similar at the start (before the intervention)?
Were the interventions well-defined and consistently delivered?
Were the groups treated equally other than the difference in interventions?
If no difference was found, was the sample size large enough to detect a difference if one existed?
If a difference was found, are you confident it was due to the intervention?
Are the findings consistent with findings from other studies?
Are the findings credible?
Clinical Significance
Note any difference in means, r2s, or measures of clinical effects (ABI, NNT, RR, OR).
*Is the target population clearly described? (yes, no, or not clear)
*Is the frequency, association, or treatment effect impressive enough for you to be confident that the finding would make a clinical difference if used as the basis for care? (yes, no, or not clear)
Are the findings clinically significant? (yes, no, or not clear)
Do you feel this article would be useful for your project? Explain.
* = Important criteria

Her last mammogram was 2 years ago and her last pap was 5 years ago. Ms. Martin made an appointment with her nurse practitioner to discuss discontinuing HRT after hearing and reading news reports about the dangers associated with the medication. Except for the HRT, Ms. Martin is taking no medication other than a daily vitamin. She had a tubal ligation after the birth of her third child but has had no other surgeries or history of any medical conditions. Her father had cardiovascular disease and died of a myocardial infarction at 77 years of age. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 81 years of age. Ms. Martin does not smoke and rarely drinks alcohol. She likes to work in her garden but is not involved in a formal exercise program. She has gained about 10 pounds since menopause.

• What are your recommendations for Ms. Martin? Will you recommend continuing or discontinuing HRT and why?
