Forty-six survivors out of an original 87, reached California starving,

tired, and traumatized for life from the experience they had just been

through. A year of suffering was spent on a time that was thought to have

been only a few months of easy traveling on a shortcut routed by a man named

Lance Hatings.

The journey began on May 12th from Springfield Illinois. A train of nine

wagons, filled with members of the Donner and Reed families, set out in

hopes of reaching California for free land and a new life. The families had

heard of a route that would get them to this great new country taking

350-400 miles off their planned trip. It seemed to be a good idea to follow

the lead of Hastings if his promise of a shorter, easier trip was true.

The first portion of the trip went smoothly as planned and they reached

Fort Laromy on June 27. There, a man by the name of James Climan thought

that the shortcut Hastings had come up with was unpractical. He thought the

old way was safer. But Reed the leader of the group didnt take the advice.

George Donner was elected leader of the party, even though Reed was the

obvious best person for the job. The short cut was supposed to have taken

350-400 miles off the original route. In fact it was 125 miles longer. On

August 6, there was a note left from Hastings saying the party shouldnt

continue. The group didnt listen to the warning though. They kept going and

soon were traveling only 2 miles a day.

On August 22 they reached The Great Salt Lake. It had taken them a month

instead of a week. So they were way behind schedule. On Aug 30 they began

the trip across the Salt Desert according to Hastings, it should have only

taken 2 days but it took five and was very difficult. Thirty oxen were lost

and people almost died of heat exhaustion.

The Oxford Dictionary defines a manager as “a person controlling or administering a business or part of a business”(p.362). There are many effective managers out in the business world today, but they arent leaders. The same dictionary also goes to define a leader as “a person who is followed”(p.339). This doesnt mean that leaders are more important than managers. They are both equally needed to ensure the functioning of the organization is kept on the road to meeting the goals set by the upper management levels. In fact, most organizations have shift leaders that fall under department managers to help in reaching the set goals. The army definition of leadership is “influencing people-by providing purpose, direction and motivation-while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization”(FM 22-100,p.1-4). Todays managers are required to fill positions with people that have the prerequisites for the job, but the leader is there to inspire the group or individuals to meet the vision that is set by leaders to help ensure the organizational goals are met. This vision is a long-term image of the leaders ambitions for the organization. In an article by Pat Wiesner he quoted some sayings by Sir H. G. Selfridge by saying:

” A manager drives people, a leader coaches.

A manager relies on authority, a leader on goodwill.

The manager says I, and the leader says we.

The manager fixes the blame while the leader resolves the problem.

The manager knows, the leader shows.

The manager says go, the leader says lets go.”

These are all good questions that we can ask ourselves to do a self-evaluation to find out if we are a leader, or just a manager (March 2002).

The Role of a Leader

Since a leader is always being looked at, they must set the example in all that they do. They do this while also helping the team achieve the organizational goal that is set forth. Basically a leader is someone who is looked up to, a mentor. A leader must create vision that is understood by all the team members. This vision is a way of motivating your team members to achieve the organizational goals that are set forth by the middle and upper management. Also, a leader will develop their subordinates to become leaders by empowering them through delegation. When delegating task down to your team members, you allow them to use their creativity to work different angles and to try different methods than the norms to complete the task and reach the desired goal. A leader must work hand and hand with their team to constantly guide and direct them through out all the task given to them.

The Responsibility of a Leader

The responsibility of a leader is one that should not be taken lightly. As a matter of fact, many effective managers that strive to become a leader never make it. One of the main responsibilities of leaders is to ensure that they have a trained and proficient team. A leader should always assess their team and then give classes that help cover the faults found. Leaders are already facing differences from many levels of society to include cultural differences such as customs, beliefs, and expectations. All of this, as well as many other issues only further complicates the task of achieving effective communication on all levels.

Perhaps the first and most obvious difference in the work environment is the difference of the sexes. Women possess a tendency to be more subtle or convincing rather than shouting out demands. Studies have shown that women are more likely to construct their requests in the form of suggestions or leading questions rather than be more direct (Adult Learners Guide, 1999). The conflict is evident if one considers the fact that males possess the complete opposite tendency. Men are often more direct and to the point. These two contrasting attributes are a fertile breeding ground for misunderstandings of all sorts.

Women also do not hesitate to mix business with personal talk where men are more anxious to get to the details of the business at hand. For women this seems to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the personal talk brings down some barriers and lets each one get to know the other so everyone is comfortable. This works in their favor in situations where they are meeting a group or individual for the first time. But on the other hand, after they become acquainted, women have trouble separating their personal feelings and allowing them to enter into their business talk as well as their daily business activities.

After the different sexes, different ethnic groups emerge as the next most noticeable distinguishing characteristics of individuals. People of different ethnicity have lived and worked together for many years but not without a fair share of challenges. The United States has long been labeled as the “Great Melting Pot”, and with good reason. American culture is by far the most diverse culture in the world. Not only are Americans exposed to new and different ethnics groups more often, but different ethnic groups and cultures are experiencing each other for the first time in America as well.

As people become more mobile on an international level, they experience a vast array of behavior. These behaviors will vary as one moves across the country. Take for example the difference in the northern and southern states, and their preconceived notions each holds of the other. Their are people in northern states which believe people of the southern states do not wear shoes or have running water in their households. Because of this false image, they automatically assume southern people are of a lower intellect. Likewise, those residing in southern states tend to believe northerners are rude and uncaring which is also a misconception. These types of preconceived notions are present for every race and culture on the planet.

It is imperative that leaders treat their subordinates and co-workers based on merit rather than assumptions. A multicultural workforce is an asset only if each individual is treated equally and fair as the others. As team members witness their leader treating everyone with equality and fairness, they will be more inclined to emulate these actions with one another. This will in turn help the group to value diversity and develop creative problem solving skills (Pierce & Newstrom, 1996).

Understanding the nuances of managing different sexes and cultures are a few of the items leaders of today will have to struggle with. Effective listening is probably the single most important skill, which ensures clear communication. Studies have shown people spend well over one third of their time listening (Adler & Elmhorst, 1999). However, people tend to go into an automatic listening mode when they make conclusions based on assumptions. These individuals are constantly agreeing and disagreeing with a speakers comments, based on their conclusions of preconceived agreements and disagreements (Pierce & Newstrom, 1996).

One of the things that shocked me the most during this movie is when Johnston first met the emperor not only did he only bow but they took a take two of the entrance and they shook hands. In the following essay I will explain the origins of epic theatre and what is actually meant by the term epic theatre. I will look at the people who influenced this form of theatre, the essential elements and how they differ from naturalism and affect the actor.

Origins of Epic Theatre

Bertolt Brecht was a playwright and practitioner who wrote plays which attacked bourgeois values. His plays were full of humour but bleak and cynical.

Erwin Piscator was a director who developed left wing expressionist theatre �agitprop’. This was made up of a shortening of the words agitation and propaganda.

He was a Marxist director who also developed left wing expressionist theatre �agitprop’. This was made up of a shortening of the words agitation and propaganda. His aim was to make theatre part of the social struggle. Agitprop was songs and short sketches which would hopefully bring about political action through creating agitation in the audiences mind. He wanted the spectators to act on what they had seen. His aims were to influence voters, raise class consciousness and clarify what communist policy was.

The communist party commissioned him to create Revue Roter Rummel in 1924. It was a collection of statistics, factual information, slide projection, dance, gymnastics with music and sketches which was taken around workers meeting halls. The 2 main characters, a master butcher and an unemployed workers began arguing in the audience and went up onto the stage. They remained there giving comments throughout from bourgeois and proletarian points of view.

His main aim, he said was to create вЂ?direct action in the theatre’: “I hoped to achieve propagandistic effects which would be more powerful than it was possible with plays, where the ponderous structure and problems tempt you to psychologies and constantly effect barriers between the stage and auditorium.”

Bartolt Brecht and director Erwin Piscator decided that they found realism in the west limited and unable to face new realities of the world. Brecht is often associated with the term Epic Theatre although Piscator was the first to use it.

Piscator was director at the Volksbuhne (1924- 27). At his own theatre (on Nollendorfplatz), he produced plays which were social and political.

He wanted his productions to contain three main qualities. He felt he must have these through his political commitment. These qualities were as follows:

Totality (represent whole)

Immediacy (contemporaneity)

Authenticity. (force spectators to act on it)

Brecht and Piscator set about producing a drama which discussed political and social issues. This new form of drama would come under the name of �episches theatre’, �epic theatre’.

Their aim was provoke the audience mentally rather than evoke them emotionally. This was very different from the social realism and naturalistic styles of Stanislavski. The actors would have to have a different attitude to the play they acted in. Actors could not remain indifferent to their role as had been the case up until then. He must remain outside the role and comment on it. If he creates a dramatic illusion then he fails. This would only make the audience applaud him instead of them actually thinking about what had happened.

Macbeth understands the reasons for resisting evil and yet he proceeds with a disastrous plan, instigated by the prophecies of the three Weird Sisters. Thus we must ask the question: If Macbeth is acting on the impulses stimulated by the prophecies of his fate, is this Shakespearean work of art really a Tragedy?

As mentioned, this script is for real purposes only, and cannot be relied on verbatim text from any previous book. The only thing left to do is to change what happened in chapter one and move on into chapter two. This script is very specific in my thinking on this point, and will be heavily debated here and now.
