An immense desire for personal satisfaction, and extraordinary reputation can often result in a sickly, perverse distortion of reality. In Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, a man well known for his intellect and wisdom, finds himself blind to the truth of his life, and his parentage. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet also contains a character that is in search of the truth, which ultimately leads to his own demise, as well as the demise of many around him. Arthur Miller’s play, The Death of a Salesman, tells of a tragic character so wrapped up in his delusional world, that reality and illusion fuse, causing an internal explosion that leads to his downfall. Each play enacts the struggle of a man attempting to come to grips with his own, harsh reality and leaving behind his comfortable fantasy world. In the end, no man can escape the truth no matter how hard he may fight it. In choosing the fragility of chimera over the stability of reality, the characters meet their inevitable ruin.


From the beginning of Sophocles’ unfortunate play, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus takes many actions and makes many choices leading to his own collapse. He could have endured the plague, but out of sympathy for his anguished citizens, he has Creon go to Delphi. When he learns of Apollo’s word, he could have calmly investigated the murder of the former King Laios, but in his hastiness, he condemns the murderer, forbidding the fellow citizens “ever to receive that man or speak to him…let him join in sacrifice, lustration…driven from every house,” (632-3). In doing so, he inadvertently curses


himself. Oedipus chooses to ignore multiple warnings, involving truth of his life and parentage. He chooses to disregard the ruinous prophecy of his fate to murder his father and wed his mother, since he thinks he can escape the divination of the gods. Oedipus attempts to defy the gods by fleeing his homeland, Corinth, but instead launches himself directly into the hands of fate. Oedipus ignores another warning of truth in ignoring the words of Teiresias. He believes he has successfully escaped his own destiny and, therefore, Teiresias’ words mean nothing, yet Oedipus could not have been farther from the truth. In a few moments, Teiresias provides Oedipus with everything he needs to know concerning his fate by saying, “You yourself are the pollution of this country,” (635). Despite this obvious proclamation of truth, Oedipus chooses to wallow in his pleasant fantasy, that he has escaped his inevitable fate. Oedipus’ foolish decisions ultimately lead to his downfall in the play. Oedipus chooses to kill Laios. He chooses to marry Iocaste. He chooses to forcefully, and publicly, assume the mission of discovering the identity of Laios’ murderer saying ironically, “I say I take the son’s part, just as though I were his son, to press the fight for him and see it won,” (633). He proceeds on this mission and chooses to ignore the warnings of Creon, Iocaste, Teiresias, the messenger, the shepherd, and anyone who attempts to stand between him and the truth; and, he chooses to blind himself. In the end, Oedipus’ most foolish choice prevails throughout the play; the choice of illusion over reality ultimately costs him his life.


Similar to the quest for truth in Oedipus’ case, so does Hamlet lead to his own decease. In the first act of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, after Hamlet is aware of the tormented ghost of his father walking on the ramparts, he goes to witness it for himself. This immediately exemplifies the theory that Hamlet, like Oedipus, is in search of the truth, until he realizes it is too much to bear. Subsequent to seeing the apparition, he is convinced to avenge his father’s murderer. The ghost tells him, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder,” (29). As Hamlet lays the trap for the new King Claudius, he is procrastinating in order to solve his self-doubt. Even after the ghost tells Hamlet how his father was murdered, Hamlet has the players act it out, just to be certain. His ambiguity of the truth remains constant. Although the king gives himself away after watching the reenactment of his brother’s murder, by shouting, “Give me some light. Away!” (79), Hamlet is still inconclusive. Hamlet must speak with his mother before he persists his plans for revenge. Hamlet meets with his mother in an attempt to set her straight. He intends on making her understand the truth behind her wrongdoings. “Come, come, and sit you down; you shall not budge. You go not, till I set up a glass where you may see the inmost part of you,” (88). It was Gertrude’s subsequent reaction that led to the pivotal moment when Hamlet kills Polonius. Octavian and his two companions put a temporary end to the civil war of the Roman Empire in 42 BC. The Triumvirs, at Philippi in Macedonia, defeated the republicans led by Brutus and Cassius. Upon the defeat and death of Antony, Octavian proclaimed the restoration of the Republic of Rome. However, he had no intention of stepping down as ruler. “Oh, my children, the new blood of ancient Thebes” (line1) Oedipus used the phrase “my children” to emphasize that his people mean as much to him as his own children. “The new blood of Thebes”, would tell the reader that they are the new young generation of Thebes. As the prologue continues, Oedipus asks his people why they are there on their knees and faces, bowing and begging for such extreme help from him and the city is dire need of help. He says the city “reeks with the smoke of burning incense, rings with cries for the healer and wailing for the dead” (lines 4-5). The city is dying fast, like incense that you burn. It has gotten so bad that it is as you could not see the great city Thebes once was, like thick reeking smoke in a building that is on fire. People are begging to get help from the healer, Apollo, the god of music, poverty, and prophecy. “Here I am myself, you all know me, the world is my fame: I am Oedipus” (lines 7-9). Here, Oedipus is showing his cocky side, he is telling his people that there is nothing that he cannot handle. Everyone knows him, he is the great riddler, and he is the man of all men in so many words. As he tells the priest to speak for everyone, he says “You can trust me. I am ready to help, I’ll do anything. I would be blind to misery not to pity my people kneeling at my feet” (lines 13-15). Oedipus shows how concerned he is about his people and lets them know that they can trust him. He said he will do anything to make this better to who and what he love so dearly. He states that he would be “blind to misery” meaning that he wants to be compassionate to misery.


The first fifteen lines in the prologue are important because it sets the tone what has happened to Oedipus’s city. The word “blind” is used several times throughout the text in many different ways, and many of them refer to Oedipus. When Oedipus says that he would be blind to misery, he did not think that he would be literally blind. He simply stated that he was compassionate to misery. It could even mean that he was blind to the secret of the truth that he indeed was the murderer of Laius.


In lines 359-375 Tiresias and Oedipus are discussing the condition of the city of Thebes. Tiresias tells Oedipus that he is not going to tell him any information about what he sees in the divine world. He tells Oedipus that only in darkness you will see the light.


Tiresias says, “how terrible- to see the truth when the truth is only pain to him who sees! I knew it well, but I put it from my mind, else I never would have come” (Lines 359-362). He is saying that he sees the truth in his divine way and it is terrible to see the things that lie ahead. There is much pain for Oedipus, and Tiresias sees what is to come. He is telling Oedipus that he only thinks he wants to know the truth; Tiresias had to do what he knew he had to by meeting with Oedipus. Oedipus continues to try to get as much information out of Tiresias, Tiresias tells him, “I fail to see that your own words are so well-timed. I’d rather not have the same thing said of me…” (Lines 368-370). Tiresias literally cannot see, the gods gave him the divine sight to see the future because of his literal eye problem. When Teiresias reveals the truth to him, he doesn’t believe him. “I say that you are the murderer whom you seek,” says Teiresias (page119). He also believes that Teiresias was with Kreon, and he was trying to get rid of him. He is very quick to judge people. Oedipus is disrespectful through the whole story. He talked with rage, when he was speaking to Teiresias and Kreon. “Am I to bear this from him? Out of this place! Out of my sight,” yells Oedipus to Teiresias (page120). “No, not exile. It is your death I want, so that the entire world may see what treason means,” says Oedipus to Kreon. Those were his negative qualities. Oedipus is also known for his intelligence. He solved the riddle of the sphinx and married Iokaste who was impressed. He goes around trying to achieve knowledge. Oedipus was a caring person to his people. As the ruler, he speaks directly to them and actually solves their problems as if they were his own. “Sick as you are, not one is as sick as I. Each of you suffers in himself alone. His anguish, not another’s; but my spirit groans for the city, for myself, for you,” says Oedipus (page116). Oedipus liked to solve mysteries like Sherlock Holmes. He wanted to find the person who killed the old king and send them away. “If any man knows by whose hand Laios met his death, I direct that man to tell me everything,” says Oedipus to the Thebians (page118). We then come to a point where other questions are aroused: What makes such an effective leader? Can each of us become a leader or do we need special qualities for that? Is there such a person who can be called “a perfect leader”?


You can easily see that leadership is a matter of large interest and that to give an answer to all those questions is impossible as long as human nature is constantly changing perspectives on life and its values. Still, if we were to analyze things from a theoretical point of view, we might sum up some of the main characteristics of an effective leader.


First of all, the main quality, if we might call it so, is intelligence, his or her given IQ and capacity to use it. Secondly, a leader must be a person to look up to, one that is able to take full responsibility for his or her actions and ideas and therefore for those whom he/she leads. A leader also has to be a good follower and listener. It is often said that “those who cannot obey, cannot command” and this applies in all areas. He/ she needs to be convincing, capable to easily handle words and thus power, at any range. But, to do this, a leader must have a well established set of principles, and to follow them is probably the hardest thing to do. And the list might be continued, depending one the specific terms of a certain area of interest.


If we consider it globally, leadership is essential in areas like war, politics, business or religion. Except for the last one, which deals with an inner guidance, the rest of them are concerned with our economical status. To simplify things, we might say that we need some of our leaders, in order to have a decent life. And, in fact, this has been Mans attempt and wish ever since he has appeared on earth. That is why even the smallest groups of primitives had their own leaders. It all relates to the surviving instinct, and we must admit that this is still a matter of great interest nowadays.


Historically, people have had a lot of personalities, whom they called leaders and who played an important role in the development of human nations and humanity, in general.


If we were to enlist some of them, we could only think of Buddha, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Confucius and others, in terms of religious beliefs and ability to define and impose certain mentalities and habits. Then, if we take Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Genghis Han or other war leaders, we can see that they really made a difference by their ability to lead thousands of people in times when this was hard enough to do. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Attaturk, Mao Ze Dong were some of those leaders who put their dreams and their followers hopes above everything and that is why they remained as major figures of the history. In relatively recent times, the number of major leaders has constantly increased and only talking about Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher or John F. Kennedy, one might think of what a real leader means.

The question is whether or not death is a “good or bad choice.” We think the answer is no. This structure is evident in that it has separate events separated by the mediation of the chorus. This is essential as it allows us to view the way the mystery unfolds unto Oedipus, thus adding to the dramatic effect.


When the play opens, the city of Thebes is wasting away under a plague that has destroyed their fields and left their women barren. Oedipus, the king of Thebes, has sent his brother-in-law, Creon, to ask the house of Apollo to ask the oracle how to put an end to the plague. Creon returns, bringing good news. Hearing this, Oedipus swears he will find the murderer and expel them from the land. Oedipus asks the people of Thebes if any of them have any knowledge concerning the kings death. The Chorus proposes that Oedipus confer with Teiresias, a blind prophet. Oedipus informs them that he has already sent for Teiresias.


This opening passage, like much of the play, is about the feeling of strength, ego and power, as well as the notion of control. King Oedipus is steadfast in the immediate search for a resolution, as well as revenge for the murder of King Laius some years ago. He plays the role of the dedicated official, unwavering in his concern for the kingdom and its people. From this we can derive information, which would suggest that Oedipus means well for his kingdom, and that he is an honourable and sensible man who knows when to confer with wiser sources, i.e. the prophet.


When Teiresias arrives, he seems hesitant in answering Oedipuss questions, cautioning him against the knowledge he possesses. Oedipus threatens him with death, and begrudgingly Teiresias tells him that Oedipus himself is the killer, and that his marriage is a sinful union. Oedipus takes this as an affront to his person, and jumps to the conclusion that Creon paid Teiresias to say these things. He mocks Teiresias, telling him that he is no prophet; a prophet should have been able to answer the Sphinxs riddle, but Oedipus himself was the only one who could.


This attack on the moral character of another when confronted is immature, but this adds to Oedipus’ character, it shows his unwillingness to either admit or consider outcomes that he finds offensive, as well as his over defensiveness. By accusing not only his friend but also the well-thought-of prophet, we can ascertain that he is quick to pass blame, this is because through these statements Oedipus feels he has lost a great deal of control over his life. His mind rejects the idea and thus disrespects what the prophet has to say, but is compelled to hear the rest of the story.


Teiresias counters that although he has no sight, Oedipus is the one who is blind to the truth. He asks him whose son he is and reminds him of the curse on his parents’ heads. He tells him that he will leave Thebes in shame. Furious, Oedipus dismisses him, and Teiresias goes, repeating, as he does, that Laiuss killer is right here before him…

If one has to choose what one believes they will not accept the proposition of Socrates’ saying that only the very existence in the world can ever determine what we believe in, either; (since, as if it were true), we might have to choose what one believes we believe ourselves to be; yet we must be not indifferent to the moral laws that we think we may be (and this is in the state of mind we live in). We must be indifferent to what that one might say of Socrates’ saying. It is true that the philosophers of this form of the doctrine are quite as much to have regarded his proposition of true faith in as to have regarded it in truth, though they have more at least different beliefs. But that belief in Jesus Christ is the real being which is on account of us as the true God of the whole world is, and by him, as we mean by the word, to the true believer. The question arises. It is as if Socrates had come to these propositions of his, that Socrates should say, “I am the true religion of the world, and my beliefs are my beliefs.” That he would do so is an account of some sort (p. 33), and we should not suppose Socrates to have any knowledge of truth in it at all, for he could not at all know which of these things is true, and which is falsehood. So, what the gods ask of them is, that we may trust in them—but these gods, it is true, would not have anything to do with truth in it. What are the gods’ answers?
