MA RAINEYS Movie Critique
The eponymous character in the play/film is Ma Rainey herself. But is she the protagonist? Using examples from the film adaptation (specific performances, the way scenes are shot, the narrative structure, etc.) write about which character you think is the main character. Whose story is this?
FILM CRITIQUE GENERAL GUIDELINES
You will write eight critical responses to film adaptations this semester. Your responsesshould be brief, 1-2 pages in length, but detailed and thorough.
Writing a successful critique means going beyond simply deciding whether the filmadaptation was “good” or “bad”. Value judgments like “it was great” are impossible tosupport with any real evidence. Instead, carefully consider the effectiveness of the filmadaptation, and how the creative choices made by the director, actors, and designers informyour understanding of the play. You may begin by simply asking yourself your generalemotional response to the film (I loved it, I only liked certain aspects of it, I thought it wouldnever end…) but that is merely scratching the surface. Your task is to determine critically andthen articulate intellectually why you believe the film succeeds or fails in its adaptation of theplay you read.
Justification of your opinions is key. There is no “right” or “wrong” response to a work ofart. However, if your perspective lacks justification your opinions will lack validity. Stating“this film was effective because the acting was good” will not suffice. Why was the actinggood, and what do you mean by “good”? Explain and use examples.
Example:Incomplete:Among the cast, performance styles varied. Meryl Streep’s interpretation of MotherCourage also appeared inordinately funny.
Complete:Among the cast, performance styles varied; rather than fragmenting the production, however, this collage of techniques complemented the evocative and eclectic settingand highlighted the way that Kushner’s script spoke across specific historicalmoments. Meryl Streep’s interpretation of Mother Courage also appeared inordinatelyfunny, thereby turning preconceived notions of the tragic character on their headand allowing the contemporary audience to see the play with fresh eyes.(Excerpt from Theatre Journal 2007).
The non-underlined portions merely state the author’s observations. The underlinedportions explain and justify why these observations matter.
Use these general guidelines to inform your approach to writing your critiques. Eachcritique will have its own specific prompt.

Project 4: Space
For this project, you will create a design consisting primarily of one element of art—the element of space. Follow these steps in creating your design:
For the surface of your design, use art board, illustration board, or an Adobe Illustrator document.
Your surface or document should measure 16″ x 20″ with a one-inch border around all four sides. To insure your design does not exceed the margins, use artist tape to outline the margins.
You are to create an original composition in which a variety of objects are portrayed in one- or two-point perspective.
You should incorporate an effective use of the principles of design, particularly in the areas of emphasis/focal point and unity of composition. Consider using the rule-of-thirds.
Your design should be abstract or nonobjective, not realistic or pictorial. There are three basic types of art: representational, abstract, and nonobjective. Representational art attempts to represent the actual visual qualities of objects or subjects from reality. Abstract art takes objects and subjects from reality and presents them in a different way—simplified, manipulated, or distorted. Nonobjective art is oftentimes mistaken for abstract art. Nonobjective art represents nothing found in the natural world; it is purely conceived for aesthetic reasons. There is no recognizable object.
Feel free to express personal spiritual views in your design.
You are not limited in the media used. For example, you may use paint, pencil, pastels, marker, paper, digital software, or whatever is necessary to create a successful design with strong visual appeal. The main requirement is for your design to be one- or two-point linear perspective.
Once you have completed your project, take two pictures of your design—one with you holding your artwork and one that is a close-up of the artwork itself. Use a good camera to photograph your work. A simple point-and-shoot will suffice. Make sure the images are crisp and clear and taken in good lighting. Your images should be in JPEG format (.jpeg). You will need to submit both images. If you created your design using Adobe Illustrator, save your work as both an Illustrator file (.ai) and a PDF (.pdf). You will need to submit both files.

TipsIn planning your design, establish a horizon line, vanishing point(s), and imaginary lines, which move towards the established vanishing point(s). Consider other elements which contribute to the three-dimensional effect such as overlapping objects, choosing colors which either recede or precede visually, using graded value on objects to make them appear three-dimensional. For example, a circle shaded to appear as a sphere.

Empowering Sexual Minorities in Post-Authoritarian Tunisia and Lebanon: Youth, Art and Political Rights
This Memo explores the political voice of sexual minorities in post-conflict and post-authoritarian contexts. It focuses on the role of social media and collective action with regards to lesbian gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activism in Tunisia and Lebanon. Regardless of the international support of LGBT rights, Tunisia’s legislators have yet to decriminalize sodomy laws in place since 1964. Instead, repression of this minority in society has risen since Ben Ali’s ouster. In Lebanon, on the contrary, the legal ban on same-sex sexual activity has been lifted in 2014. Despite the Lebanese legal breakthrough, conditions in both cases are fragile and precarious. LGBT advocacy networks push for social recognition and are part of a broader youth activism movement to shape transitions in the post-Arab Spring era.
Given the repressive politics in Tunisia and Lebanon, the Memo explores the question of why difficulties persist and how youth, particularly the LGBT community, could counter and prevent recurring patterns of violence.
This Memo recommends that the President support youth activists and art more directly in its Middle East foreign policy strategy. It maps different types of activities to illustrate how art has served as a medium to create innovative spaces of deliberation for these youth. In addition, the Memo explores the impact of collective action from within the community to prevent the recurring violence and best practices on how to effectively educate society. The author argues, however, that the creation of this new fragile spatiality is challenged by several factors, including narratives and memories of secularist and Islamist traditions.
Culture and management about the The Public Integrity Section (PIN)
Please tell me something about the layers of culture (values, norms, artifacts) in the Public Integrity Section (PIN) in the department of justice. Max 300 words and note your citation.
The explanation of the layers of culture that you might be used:
ARTIFACTS
This is the level of culture closest to the surface. Artifacts are things you can see, touch, smell. Ping pong tables, happy hours, and free lunches. It’s also the office layout, the logo rebranding you just did, and your company holiday party. This is typically what we think of when it comes to company culture.
ESPOUSED VALUES AND BELIEFS
One level deeper is your espoused values and beliefs. These are the things you think you believe and say you believe. It’s the mission statement you wrote together as a company, the code of conduct that’s in your employee handbook, or the six core company values your CEO talks about during your all-staff meeting.
