UK inflation climbs to 30-year high of 5.5% – Rise in consumer prices adds to pressure on Bank of England to raise interest rates again, by Valentina Romei in London FEBRUARY 16 2022 UK inflation has accelerated to the highest rate in 30 years, further squeezing living standards and increasing pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates again. Consumer prices rose at an annual rate of 5.5 per cent last month, up from 5.4 per cent in December and well above the 0.7 per cent recorded in January 2021, data published by the Office for National Statistics showed on Wednesday. Inflation in January was more than double the BoE target of 2 per cent — the highest since March 1992 when it reached 7.1 per cent. Jack Leslie, economist at the Resolution Foundation think-tank, warned that high inflation “could drive the deepest squeeze on living standards in six decades”. Core inflation, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco – goods with the more volatile prices — rose to 4.4 per cent in January, up from 4.2 per cent in the previous month. The figures exceeded forecasts by economists polled by Reuters, who expected CPI inflation to remain at 5.4 per cent and core inflation to increase to 4.3 per cent. […] Together with the strong employment data published on Tuesday, high inflation supports economists’ expectations that the Bank of England will raise borrowing costs again this year. “With inflation now tracking above expectations on a consistent basis and no further CPI report set for release ahead of March’s BoE meeting, markets are likely to run with the idea of a 50 basis point hike from the bank at their next meeting,” said Simon Harvey, head of FX Analysis at Monex Europe, a foreign exchange company. Samuel Tombs, economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the strength in CPI inflation will persuade the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee to increase bank rates to 0.75 per cent in March and 1 per cent in May. Martins said there could be an additional rate rise in August, while wider market expectations are that policy rates will climb above 2 per cent within a year. The central bank raised rates in December and February from their historic low of 0.1 per cent to 0.5 per cent. […] A) As reported in the abbreviated FT article, in recent months, the major pandemic and other external shocks (Brexit and the war in Ukraine) have created immense inflationary pressures for the UK and other macro-economies around the world. Explain how this might impact the economy. Show (draw) the impact of this scenario using the Classical 4×4 diagrams and the Classical aggregate supply and demand diagram. Explain the changes (shifting elements) as well as causes and effects in the diagrams. [45 marks] B) Explain the four channels of the monetary policy transition mechanism. How is contractionary monetary policy supposed to work through the four channels to tackle inflation [20 marks] C) Though the price level P is not explicitly included in it, explain and illustrate the theoretical impact of contractionary monetary policy using the Keynesian Cross diagram. Explain the multiplier effect as well as the effect on employment and show both in your diagram. [30 marks] D) Explain how one of the alternative indicators (HDI, GNHI, Ecological Footprint and Time Use Indicator) measures welfare. Drawing on the alternative welfare indicator you have explained, evaluate the usefulness of GDP as an appropriate measure of welfare for the two countries. Make sure to respond to the following questions in your answer: • Based on what kind of welfare criteria and theoretical concepts is the alternative indicator constructed? How is the indicator measured empirically? What is the critical observation of GDP’s inadequacy or limit as a welfare indicator the alternative indicator does try to address? . .

What happens when a company reaches a mid-life crisis?
People often hear about the problems of a mid-life crisis – declining health, too much stress, a changing physical appearance, or withdrawal from social relationships. As you probably know, an entire industry has emerged to help people through their mid-life crises. But what about companies? Do they experience mid-life crises also? The answer is yes, and researchers have begun to analyze the mid-life doldrums that many of America’s top companies are experiencing. Of particular interest is how mid-life companies deal with disappointing growth.
Wal-Mart experienced exceptional growth during the last three decades. Over the past two years, however, Wal-Mart’s performance has started to show signs of stress and fatigue. Growth averaging only 2% does not send out positive signals to the people who watch this retailing giant. This small growth percentage is especially troubling since major competitors, such as Costco, Target, Kroger, CVS, and Best Buy, have enjoyed increases averaging five times Wal-Mart’s meager rate.
The economic and competitive environment Wal-Mart faces has become increasingly difficult. Also, mismanagement, increasing inventories, loss of market share, and distribution difficulties have all begun to plague the industry’s cost and price leader. New turnaround strategies that management will try include increased advertising, a more holistic approach to marketing strategies, a specific focus on upscale and affluent consumers, store refurbishment and redesign, a renewed commitment to “everyday low pricing” and cost control, and an aggressive global expansion strategy. A mid-life crisis can be a difficult challenge. It will be interesting to see how Wal-Mart ages and how the company handles the difficulties that may come with its increased years.
Adapted from “Wal-Mart’s Midlife Crisis,” by Anthony Bianco, Business Week, April 30, 2007, pp. 46-56.
Case study developed by Dr. John R. Brooks, Jr., Houston Baptist University.
Questions:
Why should Wal-Mart be worried about a mid-life crisis?
How might Wal-Mart use holistic marketing to address its mid-life crisis?

How does a company known for being conservative attract a non-conservative target market?
As the company’s ad says, “You’re in good hands with Allstate!” Allstate Insurance has used this famous phrase to attract customers for some time. This mainstream market approach has served the company well. But even though the company is one of the industry’s leaders, observers began to notice an erosion of market share in some non-traditional sectors. Lifestyle strategies had not received much attention at Allstate. Motorcycle riders, for example, chose competitors Progressive and Geico over Allstate and other conservatively oriented companies. Why would Allstate be interested in targeting motorcycle riders?
The motorcycle market is growing thanks to increased interest from baby boomers and Generation Y consumers. In 2006, 1.2 million motorcycles were sold according to the Motorcycle Industry Council, and sales have been steadily climbing for the last five years. Allstate decided it was time to conduct targeted marketing research or risk losing this growing market. In addition to learning some interesting facts about today’s motorcycle riders, the company’s market research also found that over 600 of its 14,800 agents were devout motorcycle riders themselves. This interesting fact led the company to completely revamp some of its advertising and marketing strategies.
To target motorcycle riders, Allstate has begun featuring some of their bike-riding agents in their ads. The ads indicate that Allstate knows the needs of motorcycle riders better than competitors because the “good hands” are on handlebars. And who knows the needs of bikers better than other bikers? Acting on additional research information, the company has also begun sponsoring motorcycle rallies and music downloads via Rolling Stone magazine for those people who love the feel of the open road. Follow-up research will determine the success of Allstate’s attempt to bond with this market segment.
Adapted from “Let’s Ride—The Wild Ones at Allstate,” by Burt Helm, Business Week, October 1, 2007, p. 16.
Case study developed by Dr. John R. Brooks, Jr., Houston Baptist University.
Questions:
What marketing research facts led Allstate to review its advertising and marketing strategies with respect to the motorcycle market?

One of the best companies to work for is Google! They made the list at number one! Some of the factors that make this company an employer of choice is that it offers on-site physicians, nurses, medical services and health care coverage (Investopedia). They also offer some of the best paid paternal leave for parents which is major these days. Often times one will consider when and if to start a family based off of what benefits they will get with their companies.
I believe that Google values diversity in the company based off of how high they feel about looking for the best and brightest minds and expecting employees to think out of the box, says to me they embrace diversity with an open mindset.
When it comes to the “glass ceiling” in the company seems as though this something that Google is still working on this. In the past any trouble that has come to the company by way of employees accusing fellow employees of sexual assault accusations, Google currently makes sure that the harassers are paid off instead of paying for their crimes, could it be they too believe in the wrong that was done and don’t feel they can handle or manage it the way it should so they rather sweep it under the rug and pay up and keep business going.
Googles technological practices are number one at least in my eyes! Google aspires to create technologies that solve important problems and help people in their daily lives (Google AI).
