We live in a world full of cameras, some we are not even aware of. The works of Avital Meshi suggests that companies are trying to use facial recognition to gather not only information to build algorithm off of. But, also to recognize what their basic instincts are, in that way it could lead to inferring with people’s feelings, it is possible to change people’s behavior by doing this voluntarily or not. I think that this raises questions a lot of the ethics we humans have in privacy and manipulation. Avital Meshi goes down a wormhole on AI and facial recognition in her work Don’t Worry, Be Happy (2020) she exposes how visual technologies alters human interactions. The AI would shock her every time the AI does not recognize that she is smiling, the idea of AI gathering information to form facial expression is quite. I think that because of the fear of surveillance people tend to be more aware of themselves in social situations, the fear for their privacy being violated by a camera. Avital Meshi also worked on Snapped (2021), in this piece she built an art installation that shows the efficiency of an AI examining if faces have been modified through filters. I think the AI worked quite similar to the previous work i mentioned, in the way that it builds information from facial features and determines not only what they are feeling but also what they are lacking in features, which I think would make people feel more insecure being in public being covered in camerasBut I think that “feeling” recognition from the face could be inaccurate at times, everybody is different that is why it might not be fair to use upon everybody if the future of society wants to incorporate it in facilities or certain scenarios such as identifying a criminal, hiring people, and more.)source: http://www.avitalmeshi.com/Chicago style with footnotes
