The Politics
of Stairs Johnna S. Keller (b. 1973) is an architect who specializes in sustain[1]able design and
currently works at M1A Architects in Columbus, Ohio. Keller has written and
presented on sustainability and social equity at a number of conferences and is
a co-facilitator of the Living Building Challenge Collaborative in Columbus.
This essay appeared in 2016 in Design Equilibrium, a magazine published by the
Atlanta chapter of the Ameri[1]can Institute of
Architects (AIA Atlanta). A few months ago, a friend sent me an image on
Facebook. It shows a wheelchair user facing an elevator confronted with the
words, “Today is the day we take the stairs.” This example demonstrates how the
concept of “human-powered living” fails to include all humans, and
unfortunately, this example is part of a growing trend in architecture. Stairs
have been reborn as the energy-conserving and health-promoting sister to the
elevator, especially in sustainable design. However, if stairs and stair users
have been reimagined as the preferred sustainable building occupant, then it
appears that occupants with mobility impairments, relegated to using an
energy-consuming elevator, have become marginalized as undesirable occupants.
Ironically, this is occurring at a time when social equity is reemerging as an
integral part of the triple bottom line of sustainability, which inspires the
question: how can we best bring together sustainability with social equity? In
a growing number of new building projects, energy conservation measures are
implemented via rigorous design strategies and energysaving programs. In a
Seattle project that has been called “the greenest commercial building in the
world,” the design team created the “irresistible stairway” with panoramic
views of the city in the name of health and energy conservation, meanwhile
locating the elevator at the back of the building and making it accessible only
via keycard. In Keller / The Politics of Stairs handbook addition, the tenants
must abide by strict energy usage budgets and are fined for any overages.
Imagine an employee in a wheelchair in a building like this, or an important
client who uses a cane, or a parent with a sick toddler in a stroller visiting
a doctor’s office, and you begin to see how a tucked-away elevator with
controlled access can be problematic. Preferred stairways, like the “irresistible
stairway,” incorporate the design approach called the “pull strategy,” which
promotes desired behavior via information, aesthetic quality, or sensory
appeal. For example, by locating the main stairway in a visually more prominent
location than any motorized vertical circulation elements (i.e., elevators and
escalators), providing increased lighting or sensory stimulation elements, like
artwork and music, and installing motivational signage, building users are
“pulled” or encouraged to use the stairs rather than hunting down the elevator.
The intent of these pull strategies is to improve occupant health through
physical activity and to reduce environmental impacts associated with energy
consumption. Pull strategies such as these are integrated into the Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building program as the pilot
credit, “Design for Active Occupants,” and were recently introduced as a
requirement for the “Human Powered Living” Imperative in the Living Building
Challenge (LBC) 3.0 and the “Interior Fitness Circulation” Precondition in the
newly introduced WELL Building Standard v1.0. However, these growing programs
have imagined pull strategies that benefit only one type of user—those who want
to and are able to climb stairs—and in this way, these programs have created an
unequal standard of access. In such situations, architects are applying
accessibility in a “check-the-box” way; that is, they are attempting to comply
with the bare minimum of ADA Standards for Accessible Design, and nothing
further. At times, this creates architectural designs that border on the nonsensical—for
example, locating accessible restrooms on the second floor of a building with
no elevator. The ADA Standards do not detail how to create equal access, which
is why we often find the accessible entrance in the rear of a building or, as
in the case of “the greenest commercial building in the world,” elevators
hidden in the back. If we Keller / The Politics of Stairs The bottom floor of
the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, which offers three modes of vertical
transport: an elevator, an escalator, and a flight of stairs. The designer has
chosen to integrate these three into a triptych, so that each mode of transport
is visible from a single vantage point on the floor. Photo handbook are not
creating sustainable buildings that are equally accessible by all occupants,
then there is a fundamental flaw with our sustainable building standards and
their future within our field. The foundation of sustainability is built on
best practices, rather than minimum guidelines. It is about going above and
beyond to create better buildings for the occupants and our environment. For
instance, the LEED rating system’s bare minimum requirements, or prerequisites,
are already based on achieving percentages beyond minimum design requirements
for water and energy use, and earning points towards Moving sidewalk roped off
with the words “Saving Energy for the Future” in the Denver International
Airport. certification requires going above and beyond that. The LBC goes even
further than the LEED rating system in almost every respect, even social
equity. If that is the case, then why are we “checking a box” when it comes to
accessibility, especially if it marginalizes a portion of our building
occupants? What might happen to the way our buildings look if we reimagined
access as the priority end use, allowing that goal to inspire new and creative
design strategies? For example, what if we incorporate more passive heating and
cooling strategies to accommodate less available energy, or if we have different
user expectations of what conditioned spaces feel like? Or what if we encourage
manufacturers of elevators and escalators to use less energy, or possibly even
no energy, the way we are transforming the marketplace for building materials?
What if we install different verti[1]cal circulation
elements, like ramps—not as an afterthought, but as a central design strategy?
There are many what-if questions that we could ask ourselves as creative
designers of the built environment, but perhaps a foundational question is: what
is sustainability without equity? Architects might benefit from rethinking
equal access and designing user choice among vertical circulation elements.

I was bullied as a kid because I had bad-looking teeth and my parents didn’t have enough money to get me braces. I was bullied all my elementary school years and middle school. I come from a low-income family that makes enough money to make ends meet. Living from check to check and dental insurance doesn’t cover everything and the copay is expensive. Because it’s so expensive I go to the dentist once every two years when I was growing up. This is when I knew I wanted to be a dentist for low-income communities. No child should be laughed at or bullied because their teeth are not perfect. I got my braces when I was 20 years old and the average age to get braces is 9-14 years old. Poor oral health is very high in low-income communities and I want to help fight this problem when I become a dentist. Growing up I had to work more than the average child. I started working when I was 15 but with state regulations, I could only work certain hours. But when I turned 18 I worked more than 40 hours sometimes 70 hours in one week while in high school. I work to support my siblings and parents. My mom has a herniated disc and lower back pain but she fell at work in 2019 and hasn’t been the same since. During freshman year my grades were terrible because I was working 40 hours a week to help my family out. I cried and cried because I ended up with a 2.75 GPA and this really discouraged me I thought I was never going to be a dentist. But I decided not to give up because I could bring it up over my next 3 years in college. I bought it up to a 3.38 GPA and I have lowered my hours down to 25 hours a week. My mom works in pain but one day it will be over and that’s what I pray to god about. She is working while I finish up my junior year because this is the most important year for me in my college years. One thing about me is that I know I may not have the highest GPA or the highest DAT score but I will always try my best. I will always work harder than the average student because I don’t have as much time as others but I will always keep trying. Even if I fail a class I’ll try again and again and again because I’m not going to give up I’m a fighter. I want to make a difference so I will and it doesn’t matter how many times I fall what matters is getting up every time. If I can’t run I will jog, if I can’t jog I will walk, if I can’t walk I will crawl, but what I will not do is stop moving.
I recently went on a mission trip with my school’s ministry to El Paso, TX to learn about immigration issues. When I was volunteering at the shelter I learned that ICE doesn’t give them the basic things they need like toothpaste, toothbrush, enough diapers, food, water, etc. There were a few people that came up to me asking for pain medicine because they had pain in their mouths. This made me think of having a dental clinic in the shelter so they could get cleanings, extractions, temporary crowns, and more. This was a very humbling experience because I took simply brushing my teeth for granted.
Being a first-generation college student has been difficult and my freshman year of college GPA and overall GPA reflects that. I had to work full time and go to school full time so I didn’t have as much time to study as my fellow peers. Freshman year of college my dad was involved in a really bad car accident and he couldn’t work for months so I had to work to put food on the table, pay the bills, and make sure the mortgage payment was paid on time. After six months my dad was able to go back to work and I was able to focus more on my classes but I couldn’t redo my first year of school; I had to move on and hope for the best. Fast forward to my junior year of college I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and had to have surgery because I had two episodes that I had to go to the hospital for. Being in and out of the hospital put me behind in my classes and being out for surgery/recovery made it worst. Despite all of these roadblocks, I wasn’t going to give up on becoming a dentist. Sometimes life has many ways of testing your willpower to see if you’re going to stick it out or give up. When I was younger I made a promise to myself to become a dentist and help lower-income families have access to affordable (or free) dental care. I went through a lot of bullying growing up for the way my teeth looked because my parents couldn’t afford braces until I was nineteen and I don’t wish that experience on any child. Discuss the findings from each study in practice and how you will use them to make a change. Review your model selected from the Forum Discussion and determine where you are in the next step of the process of implementation. The discussion should include the EBP or QI model that demonstrates best fit for your POI. Be sure to include why it is a better fit than the other. Next consider what is still needed before changes can be made. Careful consideration of who, what, and how you would implement changes is needed and should detail: stakeholder involvement, financial, structural or process changes needed (at least one of these concepts must be discussed), technology support, ethical considerations such as HIPAA or Institutional Review Board approvals. Several local companies including The Sports Board have experienced recent labor
issues. The racial demographic makeup of The Sports Board is 78% white, while the
local labor market population is approximately 41% minority. Promotions to management
have been based on seniority/tenure. There is a growing minority population that has not
been accepted into the community. The President and four managers are white males.
The only female supervisor works in the customer service department. All other
management positions are filled by white males. Lately, The Sports Board has been hiring
more millennials resulting in three generations (millennials, Gen Xers and baby boomers)
with differing values and motivators. This has resulted in communication issues, conflict
between the employees of different generations and between management and these
employees. This has resulted in lower job satisfaction, productivity and increased turnover
even in these demanding times. To add to this, The Sports Board only offers the legally
required benefits, which millennials feel is inadequate.
Given the current situation, production workers are demanding premium pay and safer
working conditions based on their fear of contracting COVID 19.
The Sports Board currently employs 241 employees, not including HR but does include
employees from the acquisition. Prior to the acquisition the workforce totaled 176. Due to
increased product demand and the addition of some new products, output needs to be
increased by 37%. New product development must be accelerated to maintain a
competitive advantage. Marketing (including new product development) and Sales
continues to sell products to an expanding market, but the effort has been mostly through
sales professionals. All of the employees in manufacturing (including quality control),
customer service, and operations (responsible for shipping and receiving – distribution,
including raw materials, components parts and finished goods inventory; and
maintenance and cleaning) have a minimum of a high school education or GED. Some
skills training courses are provided by the company. Refer to the organizational chart
(Figure 1) for more details.
The recent acquisition has resulted in some duplication of functions, most notably in the
areas of HR, accounting/finance, marketing and production. While some individuals and
their skills would need to be retained, the redundancy needs to be addressed. In addition,
the sale of knee boards has plummeted as consumer interests have shifted resulting in
the dropping of this product.
Part 3: Developing a HRD plan
A. Develop a human resource development (HRD) plan. The Sports Board does not have
a formal training program. Given their current situation and the fact that promotions

For the next part, we’ll define “know” as someone with whom you have more than a casual acquaintance. For our purposes, to know someone means that you have an ongoing relationship with them. You know if they’re married, how many kids they have, where they grew up etc. It’s a deeper relationship than you have with a person you see once in a while and all you know about them is their name.

Many of our perceptions are formed by the media and entertainment we consume. If I told you that I watched a Police Drama set in New York City, and told you the bad guy was a drug dealer, most likely, many of you would have a similar mental image of that character. The same is true if I ask you to describe the “hillbilly” from a movie set in rural Georgia. This learned expectation partly comes from movies. Whether or not it’s accurate is irrelevant. It is what we expect.
Intellectually, we know that stereotyping (or prejudice) is wrong and dangerous. Yet most of us do it without realizing it. We try to be open minded and form our opinion of each person as an individual, but the reality is often different.
Films have the ability to shine a bright light on negative, dangerous and incorrect stereotypes and perceptions.
But as we’ve seen, they can, and do, also perpetuate them.
The film this week, In the Heat of the Night, perpetuates many stereotypes but also dispels other stereotypes.

For this essay, think of one stereotype (other than racist because that would be too easy) presented in this week’s film that was perpetuated.

In other words, were this character’s attributes necessary to resolve part of the story? Or were they included to add dimension to the film? Or were they there for comic relief? It all depends on the character and what we as an audience expect from such a character.
