Social Science Question
Reading Reflection Malthus- Excerpts from An Essay on the Principle of Population In his full treatise,
An Essay on the Principle of Population, Malthus (1798: 4-5) states the following:
…I think I may fairly make two postulate: First, that food is necessary to the existence of man. Secondly, that the passion between the sexes is necessary and will remain nearly in its present state.
…Assuming then my postulata as granted, I say, that the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man. Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio. Subsistence increases only in an arithmetical ratio. A slight acquaintance with numbers will shew the immensity of the first power in comparison of the second. By that law of our nature which makes food necessary to the life of man, the effects of these two unequal powers must be kept equal. This implies a strong and constantly operating check on population from the difficulty of subsistence. This difficulty must fall somewhere and must necessarily be severely felt by a large portion of mankind….
Given this passage, and your excerpt reading from later in his essay, how does he relate those two laws to population? What does Malthus see as the problem between unchecked population and food? Why? What ideas does he have to keep the population in check? What are positive and preventative checks on the population? Do you agree with his ideas? What might be some problems with the solutions he proposes?
You are responsible to answer these questions by reading the essay I will provide. The answer should be in an essay form but it should answer all the given questions. No need for intro or conclusion
