B. Personal Reflection

The study has provided a picture of an organization that is striving to align its practices with its strategy amid challenges in the internal and external environment. The functional design embraced by the hospital leads to faster decision making, improved learning among the people in the same unit, and easier communication due to a similar skill set (Burns, Bradley, & Weiner, 2011). The values embraced by the staff suggest that the hospital is working together to achieve the common goal stated in the mission and vision. I believe that the hospital’s priorities involve delivering quality care services. This belief is based on the observation that the practices of the hospital focus on the quality of care and the relationships between the hospital and its clients. The major wicked problem I found regards the cost of care. The hospital does not give sufficient attention to this issue although it forms an important element of its culture. The tendency to overlook this aspect of healthcare indicates that the hospital might be locking out a significant section of the population with financial difficulties.

The analysis has provided me with important insights on the key areas that I need to improve as a member of the organization. I should participate more in decision making because it indicates a positive step towards helping improve the hospital (Meslin 2010). The state of communication across the organization is inadequate and requires significant changes to reach adequate levels. I believe that if I play my part then I might influence other members of the hospital to play their part in enhancing communication and ultimately the quality of care provided. Acting as an example will help me leverage the benefits of transformational leadership outlined by Bass and Riggio (2006) to advocate for change towards best practices. I think I will be most useful to the hospital in ensuring effective use of informatics to improve the services. I will combine my knowledge in information technology and nursing to help develop an informatics program that helps the hospital to achieve greater success.

In addition to helping solve the problem of communication, I will contribute towards enhancing collecting data and reporting information across the organization and to external entities. I am convinced that nursing informatics has the potential to significantly improve various aspects of the center and help it meet its goals. Accordingly, I will work in this area to help deliver an informatics program that meets the needs of the hospital.
