For many decades, the broadcasting of a large sporting event such as the Super Bowl was guaranteed to draw many fans together in a convivial atmosphere around a television set. Whether in a living room or a local bar or pub, the television was a media giant in sport that promoted many other industries, such as food and beverage and automobile companies sponsoring these events. As media has evolved, however, with more reliance on social media and other forms, it opens up new opportunities and challenges to leagues wishing to expand their footprint internationally. Although social media provides access to sports from anywhere in the world, in some nations, media may be under governmental control or much less advanced than it is in the United States, so many factors must be considered.
League executives must constantly be concerned with how to grow the presence of their league domestically and abroad. Or should they return their focus to building their global fan bases through television?
