Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of protein timing on resistance-trained athletes participating in a 10-week off-season conditioning program.

Methods:

Subjects:

Number: 33

Sex: Males

Age: College Athletes: 19.6 (+/- 1.3 years); 19.9 (+/- 1.3 years);

20.7 (+/- 1.1 years) respective to experiment group

Height: 183.4 cm (+/- 5.1 cm); 183.4 cm (+/- 5.1 cm); 179.4 cm

(+/- 5.1 cm) respective to experiment group

Weight: 102.3 kg (+/- 18.9 kg); 95.1 kg (+/- 14.4 kg); 100.1 kg (+/- 27.2 kg) respective to

experiment group

Nature: Strength and power athletes – at least two years resistance

training experience – Participants were not permitted to use any additional nutritional supplementation and had not consumed anabolic steroids or any other anabolic agents known to increase performance for the previous year.

Protocol:

Participants were randomly assigned to either 1 – a protein supplement provided in the morning or evening (group), 2 – a protein supplement provided immediately before and immediately after workouts, 3 – control group

Participants reported to the human performance laboratory on two separate occasions

The first testing session occurred before the onset of protein supplementation

The second testing session occurred at the conclusion of the 10-week supplementation program

All testing sessions occurred at the same time of day

Instrumentation:

Body composition was determined using whole body dual energy X-Ray absorptiometry

Upper and lower body power measurements were measured with a Tendo power-output unit

All urinary urea nitrogen measures were determined with an Analox GM7 enzymatic metabolite analyzer

Training Program:

A 10-week off-season conditioning program – all groups performed the same resistance training for 10-weeks

The training program was a 4-days-per-week split routine that was supervised by laboratory personnel

All participants completed a daily training log, which was collected by research investigators on a weekly basis

Results of the Study:

No significant changes in caloric intake, carbohydrate intake, or fat intake were seen in any group

A significant increase in daily protein intake was seen in am/pm but not pre-post or control

Urinary nitrogen excretion significantly increased in all groups (12.2 +/- 5.5g to 21.8 +/- 11.2 g)

No significant change in body mass occurred during the 10-week program in any group – no differences between groups were observed

Significant improvements were seen in 1RM squat were seen in all three groups

Significant improvements were seen in 1RM bench press in am/pm and pre-post groups only

Peak power in the squat exercise significantly increased in the am/pm and pre-post groups (1,341 +/- 290 W vs 1,503 +/- 291 respectively)

Mean power in the squat exercise significantly increased in am/pm and pre-post groups

Peak power in the bench press exercise significantly improved for pre-post only

Conclusions:

The findings of this study do not support the benefits of pre- and post exercise ingestion of a 42g protein supplement compared with a morning and evening ingestion of the same protein supplement during 10-weeks of resistance training in resistance-trained men.

The additional intake from a protein supplement, regardless of its timing, might not result in further performance gains.

The results from this study confirm the results from previous studies and further indicate that the timing of protein supplement ingestion does not provide any additional benefit for strength and power gains and lean tissue accruement in resistance-trained athletes.

The results of this study do not support the hypothesis that protein timing provides a benefit to lean body mass, strength and power improvements.

Goal

Select one problem from the homework and write up its solution. The solution must include an illustration, a free-body diagram, equations for Newton’s Second Law, algebraic steps, and any accompanying explanations to make the solution clear to the reader.

This lab activity will be evaluated on the following components:

The correctness of your solution

Illustrations included

Clearly typed equations and formulae

Organization

Overall clarity

Resources

Every student has access to the Google Suite.

Software to write the report

Use Google Documents (or equivalent such as MS Office, Open Office, etc.) to write your documents. Use the built-in section titles and headings.

To write formulae and equations, use the “Insert Equations” function in the Insert Drop-down menu. In the same menu, the item above Insert Equations, allows you to insert special symbols, such as greek letters or math symbols.

.

Most Equation Editors (in Google and Pages, at least) allow you type in commands for the math formulae that are based on LaTeX. So, if you wish to type in the following:

You must type in the equation editor the following (without the quotes)

“\Sigma F = m \vec a”

Here is a quick reference on LaTeX commands for math symbols and letters.

Diagrams and Pictures

Generally speaking, copying and pasting someone else’s diagram is a copyright violation, so it’s safe to avoid it. Make your own graphs and diagrams.

For Diagrams – Use Google Draw or Presentation where you can draw a diagram and then copy and past it in your documents. (Alternatives include Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, etc.)

For Graphs – use a spreadsheet – Google Sheets, MS Office Excel, etc. Then copy and paste into your document.

Overall Appearance of your Document

Your document should include full sentences organized in paragraphs. You cannot simply use bullet lists, or put the equations and skip the explanations. That is why it is called a Report.

As with the diagrams and illustrations, use your own words. Do not copy and paste other people’s words.

Grammar, Style, and Punctuation

Most Editors have automatic spell checkers. There are apps on the web which can also scan for punctuation and style. One such is Grammarly which has paid and free versions.

When you finish with your report, run the checks for common grammatical and spelling errors.

Bibliography

If you have used external resources, make sure to include them in the end of your report. The best way to do this is to use a bibliography app. Here is one free that I have used in the past:

https://www.mybib.com/#/projects/nQQaya/citations

Appendices

If you want to include data from experiments that take a lot of space, or add more details that might or might not be necessary – consider putting them in an Appendix at the end of your report.

Do not make your report longer than absolutely necessary!

The data in rental_PS3.dta (or rental_PS3.csv) includes observations related to the rental

The data in rental_PS3.dta (or rental_PS3.csv) includes observations related to the rental housing market for a number of college cities in the US in both 1980 and 1990.

city = city label/identifier

year = year (either 80 for 1980 or 90 for 1990)

pop = total city population

pctstu = percent of the total city population represented by students

rent = average rent level

avginc = average per capita income

y90 = dummy variable = 1 if year is 1990 (0 for 1980)

Note there are also log versions of pop (lpop), rent (lrent), and avginc (lavginc).

Estimate the following regression model using OLS and report the results (copying and pasting the Stata output is fine).

Interpret the coefficient estimate associated with the y90 variable.

Interpret the coefficient estimate associated with the pctstu variable.

Now estimate the model as a fixed effects regression and report the results. Interpret the FE coefficient estimate associated with the pctstu variable and compare it with the OLS estimate from part c.

Can you describe any examples of what the “fixed effects” might be capturing in this specific model?

The data loanapp_PS3.dta (or loanapp_PS3.csv) includes observations on home mortgage loan application outcomes.

Outcome:

approve = 1 if the loan application was approved, 0 if denied

Applicant characteristics/demographics:

white = 1 if applicant is white

married = 1 if applicant is married

male = 1 if applicant is male

Applicant credit measures:

chist = 1 if applicant does NOT have any existing credit accounts more than 60 days past due

pubrec = 1 if applicant has previously filed for bankruptcy

obrat = other debt/credit obligations, measured as % of total income

loanprc = ratio of loan amount to home purchase price (loan-to-value)

Use the logit estimator to determine how all of the applicant characteristics and credit measures are associated with the likelihood of loan approval. Report your results. Do the coefficient estimates associated with the credit measure variables impact the probability of loan approval as you would expect?

Is there statistically significant evidence of any gender preference/discrimination in home mortgage lending decisions based on this data? Why or why not?

What is the predicted difference in the likelihoods of being approved for a home mortgage loan for a white, single female vs. a white single male (use the sample means for the values of the credit measures)?

Is there statistically significant evidence of any racial preference/discrimination in home mortgage lending decisions based on this data? Why or why not?

What is the predicted difference in the likelihoods of being approved for a home mortgage loan for a white, married male vs. a non-white, married male (use the sample means for the values of the credit measures)?

Estimate the same model using probit and report the results. Are the probit results consistent with those from the logit estimator?

Article: Cuttings of prized Sun Gold kiwifruits were smuggled to China and NZ growers are divided over what to do about it by Emily Clark (2021)

Summary

The SunGold, a variety of kiwifruits with superior qualities was developed in New Zealand and is owned by Zespri co-operative. Zespri has the plant variety rights (PVR) or patents for the SunGold kiwifruit in New Zealand. Only farmers licensed by Zespri are allowed to grow SunGold variety. Nevertheless, the cuttings of SunGold kiwifruits were smuggled to China and resulting in plantations of counterfeit SunGold across China. New Zealand growers, the owners of SunGold brand, are not certain on whether to license Chinese farmers or fail to defend its intellectual property for the sake of maintaining good trading relationship with China.

Question 1

What does “PVR is equivalent to a patent” mean? And what is the difference between PVR/Patent and Trademark in the case of SunGold kiwifruit.

Answer:

“PVR being equivalent to a patent” means that plant variety rights just like patents give the inventor some exclusive rights or privileges. In the context of SunGold kiwifruit, the PVR gives exclusive right to Zespri as the only authorized producer of SunGold kiwifruit. Patent and trademark are different in the sense that trademark is the exclusive right to use a specified brand word or symbol to represent the brand. For example, in this case the trademark of Zespri is “product of New Zealand” sticker.

Question 2

What will happen to the Chinese kiwifruit market if Zespri is successful in getting all the Chinese growers to pay the licensing fee? [Hint: what kiwifruits will be available in the Chinese market?]

Answer:

The Chinese kiwifruit will be dominated by locally grown kiwifruits rather than imports from New Zealand. Additionally, production supply will increase because more producers are licensed hence a decrease in prices of kiwifruit in China market, that is; increase in market supply corresponds with a decrease in price.

Question 3

What are the advantages of New Zealand exporting their SunGold kiwifruits worldwide as they are doing now?

Answer:

The New Zealand producers will have access to the larger international market

Better control of international market prices for kiwifruits and less competition

Question 4

What is the advantage(s) of licensing the patent to overseas farmers, instead of exporting?

Answer:

By licensing the oversee farmers instead of exporting, Zespri cooperative will generate income in form of license fee paid by such oversee farmers,

It is the best strategy of managing political and commercial risks of doing business in China. Cooperation with the oversee farmers will be more effective in the long-term in terms of fiscal health of the kiwifruit industry instead of gaining justice through litigations and confrontation.

Sample of Article Review

What is/are the author’s goal(s)?

The author’s goal is to explore the electoral performance of four Central American parties that have roots in armed opposition movements.

What is/are the author’s objective(s)?

The author’s objective is to seek answers to what extent have the former guerillas groups succeeded as political parties and why certain political parties had better success rates than other similar political parties in Central America.

3. Summary

The article “The Transition from Armed Opposition to Electoral Opposition in Central America” by Michael E. Allison is about how different political parties in Central American countries (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) started to move out of being guerillas and made their way into political parties. The article focused on four political parties for each country: Nicaragua (FSLN), El Salvador (FMLN), Guatemala (URNG), Honduras (PUD). There were two main political parties in each country. The voting processes for each country was different. Because the voting was different in different countries it sometimes was hard for third- party challengers to compete. The voting in single-member-distracts voting tends to create a 2-party system so it makes it more difficult for third-party challengers to compete effectively. PUD was the political party that had the most difficultly getting into the favorable spot of the people. FSLN was the only one of these parties to have occupied presidency

Key Points: (10 to 12 bullet points)

The FSLN lost office in 1990 and has not regained it but it still is one of the two strongest electoral forces in Nicaragua. FSLN is the only one that has served in both government roles and opposition roles.

ARENA was another political party in El Salvador that did not have a connection with the civil war era. The presidential candidate was young. FMLN did not want to be associated with the civil war era; they had a hard time disassociating themselves from the civil war.

In Guatemala, the political party URNG got 10 percent of the vote in the legislature and presidency. It was a high number for a new political party that did not have any experience in the electoral before.

In Honduras the government announced that there was an amnesty program for political prisoners and guerillas in exile because of that many former guerrillas agreed to abandon what remained of the armed struggle and join into a new political party.

Honduras had two main political parties which were the National Party and the Liberal party and the third largest was PUD. PUD did not come close to winning an election although their seats in the election increased. PUD did not have a chance in winning against the two main political parties.

FSLN is the only group to win presidency and it is still one of the two largest groups in Nicaragua.7. The PUD entered electoral competition weaker both organizationally and in public support than the region’s other guerrilla groups

The probability of the new political parties to most likely succeed in competing in presidential systems under majority runoff rules than under plurality electoral rules was higher. The political parties are likely to perform better in election for president where there is a majority runoff than plurality voting.

By the end of the century, the formed opposition groups had disarmed, demobilized, and pursued the electoral route to power. These political parties were guerillas before the political parties.

Initial electoral performance of the new political parties closely was closely tied their experiences and performance as armed opposition groups. Medium and long-term success was based on their ability to exploit the personnel and skills developed during the insurgent period.

Glossary

Amassed (v.)- gather together or accumulate (a large amount or number of valuable material or things) over a period of time.

Coalesce (v.)- come together to form one mass or whole.

Nom de guerre (n.)- an assumed name under which a person engages in combat or some other activity or enterprise.

Upheaval (n.)- a violent or sudden change or disruption to something.

Poised: having a composed and self-assured manner.

Propelled: drive, push, or cause to move in a particular direction, typically forward.

Cadres: a small group of people specially trained for a particular purpose or profession.

Incumbent: necessary for (someone) as a duty or responsibility.

Conclusion

Author provides ample examples of various armed forces that emerged during repressive governments in four Central American countries. The author elaborates on how these developed and the capacity that each had to overthrow the government. Yet, not all of these armed rebellions were successful. The author demonstrates the exhaustive and oppressive military systems that the region had undergone for decades and the desperation from people to find alternatives to new forms of government. The article had a lot of numbers which I did not like, but those numbers helped to prove the point about the votes.

Al-Rajhi Bank

Introduction

Al-Rajhi is one of the world’s major Islamic banks in Saudi Arabia. This is a very lucrative institution with a sizable overall asset base. The organization represents a significant investment for Saudi Arabia, as it houses the largest joint-stock companies in the United Arab Emirates (Hislop et al., 2018). The bank has implemented knowledge management practices throughout its operations to attract new customers and maintain existing ones. They’ve developed exclusive methods and strategies that enable them to anticipate what their clients desire and how they might obtain it without asking. This article will discuss all facets of knowledge management and methodology, including methods and applications. Additionally, despite being one of the most lucrative businesses, the newspaper will look into the bank’s difficulties.

Numerous businesses have made knowledge management a central approach for accomplishing their goals. Knowledge management is a type of information management that entails identifying, capturing, evaluating, and disseminating knowledge throughout an organization. This entails providing staff with access to database information, policies, and other critical information. Workers will be able to anticipate their clients’ demands, which will allow them to acquire new consumers.

AI-Rajhi has made eight critical steps toward success in knowledge management. To begin, the organization highlighted the potential benefits of the program to the company’s performance. Second, technological developments facilitated the development of a change-oriented culture within the bank. By implementing a knowledge management program, the organization was able to identify and prioritize critical requirements, allowing it to focus on the most critical requirements. Due to the bank’s effective senior leadership, it developed a competent management implementation strategy that guides the organization toward program execution. The bank was able to complete some initiatives as a result of the roadmap successfully. Al-Rajhi Bank has effectively implemented these tactics to grow into a significant Saudi Arabian enterprise (Alzalabani & Nair, 2019). Each year, the company’s consumer base has risen significantly. According to data, Al-Rajhi has an annual client growth rate of 10%, rather impressive.

While Al-Rajhi Bank operates efficiently, its knowledge management system is experiencing some short-term difficulties. They must devise a strategy for assisting in the development of knowledge management systems. To remain competitive, the bank needs to invest in technological advancements. Technology is a critical component of knowledge management, and its performance is directly related to it, given how dependent knowledge management is on it. Human resources and corporate culture are other areas where the bank’s knowledge management should be improved (Alzalabani & Nair, 2019). These two factors have a direct effect on how knowledge management is conducted. To retain and acquire new clients, the business must pay particular attention to the components mentioned above.

Al-Rajhi Bank has experienced significant difficulty integrating knowledge management systems in recent years. The organization has been unable to encourage personnel because they are perpetually satisfied with their previous behavior. Employees struggle to adapt to a knowledge management plan. Keeping pace with rapidly emerging technologies is also expensive for a business’s bottom line (Alzalabani & Nair, 2019). As technology advances, system upgrades become prohibitively expensive for Al-Rajhi Bank.

Recommendations

The bank should generate a visual or audio message to alter the receiver’s perception and decision-making behavior. In addition, they should build a framework for evaluating new experiences that incorporates framed experiences, contextual knowledge, values, and expert perspectives. Furthermore, the data should be distinct and offer only the most important and understandable details regarding the goals.

Conclusion

For years, knowledge management has been a critical component of Al-Rajhi Bank’s operations. The bank devised tactics that allowed them to adopt the approach, which resulted in increased clientele. They were able to foresee the wants of their consumers and work by their specifications. They have, however, experienced several obstacles, such as the high cost of technical innovation. The issues demanded the creation of proposals to assist the organization in continuing to thrive. The company must keep its data private and stay up with technological advancements to succeed.

Topic–Does the Topic relate to Environment and Business?

The business I have chosen to evaluate belongs to the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion businesses have recently focused on being more environmentally responsible to appeal to customers that wish to shop ethically. I chose to analyse whether fast fashion businesses can truly be environmentally and socially responsible. Environmental goals and business objectives tend to conflict each other often. Many businesses now greenwash in order to maintain their current customer base. Many companies fail to meet the claims they make. Corporate social responsibility and being sustainable has not always been a priority to businesses. With time there are many more businesses focusing on their environmental impact. H&M is one of the businesses that has been praised as well as criticized for it’s sustainability efforts as a fast fashion business.

Thesis:

H&M has been marketed as an environmentally conscious firm that aims to make ethical decisions. The business has also been criticized for not doing enough when considering sustainability. The nature of the fast fashion firm that encourages consistent sales goes against many core environmental issues. Fast fashion is considered one of the major industries that leads to environmental degradation and H&M falls under this category.

Outline-

H&M has made major progress in its sustainability department. It has won numerous awards including the “PETA Vegan Fashion Award” as well as the “Corporate responsibility reporting awards” (“Praise from others”). This large firm that has been expanding for many years, now as a result of growing consumer concerns has had to do better environmentally.

One of the steps taken by H&M is their eco-conscious clothing line. This clothing line is claimed to be made more sustainably in comparison to the rest of their products. The choices in materials in particular is considered better for the environment in comparison to their regular clothing line. For example, “H&M Group was given a Vegan Deco Award by PETA for a patterned cotton rug made from 100% recycled cotton that was part of our Conscious HOME collection” (“Praise from others”). In addition to this, the business also offers conscious points for shopping from their eco-conscious line. This is aimed to encourage people with environmental concerns to shop more from the brand. It also helps to get more customers to choose to purchase from this clothing line instead.

There are limitations to this however, one being how evidently small their eco-conscious section is in comparison to their regular clothing line. Furthermore, it is a fast fashion brand and probably regardless of its sustainable efforts causes major environmental damage. This point ties in with what is explained earlier. Regardless of their sustainable efforts, they are still evidently causing way more environmental damage then they are doing good.

They have been making efforts not only withing the business but outside as well. For instance, “H&M, one of the world’s largest fast fashion brands, has launched a €1m ($1.16m) recycling prize in an effort to engage innovators, technologists, scientists and entrepreneurs to find a solution to a growing problem in the clothing industry: waste and pollution” (Chhabra, 2015). Financial incentives were provided for a recycling scheme. This is not related to how they run their business but simply seems to encourage ideas and innovative environmental solutions. The marketing department makes extensive efforts to represent this fast fashion brand as something that is good for the planet. The company has faced criticism in relation to this scheme. It is stated that, “critics question whether the company is side stepping the knottier issues of overproduction and worker rights by emphasising materials innovation and technology – especially when recycling the mixed fibres so common in fast fashion is proving tricky” (Chhabra, 2015). It seems that, although making recycled clothing is possible it does not agree with the pace of the fast fashion industry. It is challenging to support consumer culture and sustainability.

Although many consistent efforts are being made, they are also being criticized for their limitations on making impacts that matter. It is questionable whether H&M simply has been making these efforts to not lose customers to other more sustainable businesses.

H&M like many other businesses has made efforts to be more sustainable, although once analysed, the impact of these efforts are questionable specially considering the nature of the business. Sustainability and fast fashion conflict with one another, which is why H&M faces so many difficulties making lasting impacts.

Assuming the coordinates of points 1 and 2 in the rectangular Cartesian system as x1, y1 and x2, y2, respectively (as calculated from the previous step) the coordinates of point 3, x3, y3 can be calculated, assuming straight line segments between points, as follows.

Slope of line 1-3, m- = (y3 – y1)/(x3 –x1) = tan[0.5(?1+?3) – 0.5 (?1+?3)]

And for line 2-3, m+ = (y3-y2) / (x3-x2) = tan[0.5(??+?3) + 0.5 (?2+?3)]

Solving, x3 = [(y1 – y2) + x2m+ – x1 m-]/(m+ – m-)

and, y3 = [m+y1 – m-y2 +( x2-x1)(m- – m+)]/(m+ -m-)…………….PLEASE VERIFY THESE Equations

I explained in the class about Unit Processes. There are three types of unit processes, 1) a point near the surface or boundary, 2) a point interior in the flow, 3) a point near the oblique shock.

In the example 11.2 (in the book) we come across all the two types of Unit Processes except the oblique shock (sonic line instead). The initial line is a like a boundary point, where some angles are known. The example I wrote is for a general internal point. The points 1 and 2 are known points from the boundary conditions or previous calculations (from the Table that you create). So, for the construction you start from the sonic throat line. Take the half height of the throat as, say 1 unit (cm or inch). Your x, y coordinate starts from there. X axis is the axis of the nozzle. Y coordinate is vertical height of different points. For e.g., for the sonic line the x, y are 0,1, i.e., point a in Figure 11.8

I. CASE

Introduction and Background

As a senior accounting student at Grandview State University (a fictitious university), you have been selected to join a new initiative based on your interest in forensic accounting. This new initiative, described as the Fraud Service Project (FSP), is a collaborative effort between the accounting department at your university and the Grandview Police Department (PD). The FSP provides free forensic accounting services to small not-for-profit organizations in the Grandview community that believe that they may have been victims of fraud. Student volunteers, under the supervision of their faculty advisors, assist the Grandview PD’s fraud unit in the investigation of possible fraud. The responsibilities of the student volunteers and their faculty advisors include meeting with the fraud victims and police detectives, examining relevant documents, and preparing a written report to the Grandview PD. Upon reviewing the written report, the Grandview PD will consult with the county attorney to decide the next course of action. The county attorney could dismiss the case, request further investigation, or charge the alleged fraud perpetrator.

Your first assignment for the FSP involves a possible fraudulent situation at a local not-for-profit organization, the Grandview Community Recreation Association (GCRA). As part of this assignment, you and your faculty advisors are invited to attend a confidential meeting at the Grandview PD’s headquarters to discuss the GCRA case with police sergeant Brody Carnahan, lead investigator on the case, and two of GCRA’s Board members.

GCRA is a community-based recreational association that sponsors various youth sports activities in the Grandview community. It was organized as a not-for-profit organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c) (3). As such, GCRA is required to file Form 990 each year with the Internal Revenue Service. The primary revenue source of GCRA is participant fees, usually paid by the parents of the youth who participate in the various sports activities sponsored by GCRA. In addition, GCRA receives two grants from the local government. Expenses for GCRA consist of playing field and office rentals, salaries for two part-time employees (the executive director and the office manager), utilities, insurance, sports apparel, and a variety of sports equipment. To minimize expenses, GCRA relies heavily on volunteers to help with coaching, setting up and tearing down the playing fields, staffing registration booths at sports events, and distributing promotional flyers in the community.

The GCRA Board of Directors is comprised of the paid part-time executive director and four volunteers. The current members of the Board are Quentin Macintosh, executive director; Greg Andres, president; Brittney Wheeler, vice-president; Robert Norwalk, treasurer; and Annemarie Karon, Board officer. Jess Daniels, the paid part-time office manager, attends all Board meetings in an ex officio capacity. Members of the Board are tasked with carrying out the general business operation of GCRA. Quentin sets the agendas for the Board, oversees the volunteers, and promotes the association’s activities. Greg manages the scheduling of the playing fields. Brittney oversees the training of coaches. Robert handles the association’s finances, including filing tax returns and preparing the financial statements. Annemarie assists wherever help is needed.

The Confidential Meeting

During the confidential meeting at the Grandview PD’s headquarters, both Greg and Brittney expressed concerns about GCRA’s financial situation. In particular, they were worried about an apparent discrepancy between the cash balance in the accounting record, as reported by Robert, and the checking account balance, as reported on GCRA’s bank statement. They also suspect that Robert might have obtained a debit card for GCRA’s checking account without the Board’s knowledge or approval. In addition, they have concerns about Robert’s recent behavior, reporting that he did not attend the last two monthly Board meetings and has not responded to numerous phone calls and email messages in regard to the cash discrepancy. They recalled a Board meeting where Robert complained about not getting paid for all of the time that he was spending on GCRA’s business. After discussing the cash discrepancy and Robert’s odd behavior with the other Board members, Quentin and Annemarie, they decided to contact the police.

To aid with the investigation, Greg and Brittney brought several documents for Sergeant Carnahan, which were then shared with you and your faculty advisors. These documents are presented as Exhibits 1 through 8. Exhibit 1 shows the fee structure for each GCRA-sponsored sport. Exhibit 2 provides the details on the revenues, expenses, and increase in net assets for the year ending October 31, 20X1. Exhibit 3 provides the details on the revenues, expenses, and increase in net assets for the three months ending October 31, 20X1. Exhibit 4 is the accounting record prepared by Robert, detailing the association’s transactions from August through October 20X1. Given that GCRA is a small not-for-profit organization, it elects to use the cash-basis method of accounting. Exhibit 5 contains the three most recent bank statements. In addition, several of the association’s canceled checks and all of the deposit slips for the three-month period are included in Exhibits 6 and 7, respectively. The approved supplier list for GRCA is in Exhibit 8.

(Exhibits 1-8 in separate word document)

The Board of Directors

You learn more about the Board of Directors as you start the investigation. The executive director, Quentin Macintosh, started working part-time for GCRA after retiring from a full-time career as a salesperson. A widower, Quentin enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, who are involved in GCRA’s baseball activities. The president, Greg Andres, is an attorney with his own law office. He is a married father of three and enjoys volunteering because his children are involved in many of the sports activities. Vice-president Brittney Wheeler is a single mother and grade school teacher with two children, who are in the baseball program. Robert Norwalk, the treasurer, recently married his third wife. He is currently working for a temporary agency, as his previous managerial position with a mid-sized firm was eliminated due to a merger and acquisition. His three children from his previous marriages participated in the sports activities when they were younger. Annemarie Karon, a Board officer, is retired from an administrative job with the city. She wants to be involved because her four grandchildren are starting the T-ball program. Jess Daniels, the paid part-time office manager, attends college full-time. As a teenager, she was very active in soccer and umpire training.

The Internal Controls

Internal control refers to procedures and policies, as well as certain activities, established by an organization to safeguard assets and records, assign responsibility and accountability, prepare accurate financial statements, and ensure compliance with laws, contracts, and regulations. Many control activities are important, but in the context of GCRA, you decide to focus on two important control activities—separation of duties and independent checks on performance—and to determine how these control activities operate at GCRA.

To achieve an effective segregation of duties, no one person should have responsibility over authorization, accounting, and custody. Potential problems could arise if one person has control over any two of the preceding functions. At GCRA, the part-time executive director, Quentin Macintosh, and the Board president, Greg Andres, are in charge of authorization. They authorize the payment of checks by performing a brief review of the checks and supporting documentation. Robert Norwalk, the volunteer treasurer, is in charge of accounting. He prepares the monthly accounting documents and the quarterly and annual financial statements, and also files the tax returns. Jess Daniels, the part-time office manager, maintains custody of the checkbook by keeping it locked up when Robert does not need it to write the checks.

Quentin conducts independent checks on performance, in a general sense, and addresses any questions or problems brought up by the volunteers. As required, Annemarie must review the schedules for the playing fields that Greg prepares. Mistakes in scheduling the playing fields are difficult to correct, so this review is important. Jess is responsible for reviewing the bank statements and reconciling the checking account. It appears, however, that the review and reconciliation are not completed on a timely basis.

The Fraud Triangle

The fraud triangle is a useful tool for analyzing situations in which fraud has occurred or is suspected or where it could occur.1 There are three parts to the fraud triangle: motivation, opportunity, and rationalization. Motivation is the reason the perpetrator (a person or an organization) has for beginning the fraud; it is a real or perceived financial pressure or need. For an individual, for example, motivation could be supporting an elderly parent, experiencing a divorce, or suffering from drug addiction. Opportunity is the way in which the perpetrator can commit the fraud without being detected. Opportunity, for instance, could be weak separation of duties or a supervisor who does not understand the work of subordinates. Rationalization is the self-justification that explains committing the fraud. Possible rationalizations are a belief that stolen money is a loan and will be paid back or is a way to “get even” for not receiving a pay raise.

Some Characteristics of a Not-For-Profit Organization

A not-for-profit organization (NFP) faces some challenges not typically faced by large for-profit organizations. An NFP will have a Board of Directors to provide oversight, as does a for-profit corporation. The members of a Board at an NFP, however, may not be familiar with accounting or internal controls, or, if they are, these areas might be neglected as the NFP focuses on its core services. In addition, the Board may not have an ethics policy or an audit committee. Such an organization will most likely rely on volunteers to do much of the work, and these volunteers may not be familiar with financial oversight. Moreover, conflicts of interest among executives, Board members, suppliers, and beneficiaries may not be addressed (Ho 2010; Zac and De Armond 2015).

Donations are essential for the operations of the NFP, and it is possible that a major donor will come to wield substantial influence and possibly override the wishes of the Board members. An NFP may hesitate to report suspected fraud because it does not want bad publicity. The concern is that if donors hear about such a financial loss, they will not contribute in the future. In addition, as the result of such a situation, the Board may fear losing the organization’s important tax-exempt status (Baker Tilly 2016).

II. CASE REQUIREMENTS

Compare GCRA’s accounting document (Books) with its bank statements (Bank). Identify the differences, if any. Consider using a table to keep track of any differences.

Consider the differences, if any, identified in Question 1. Do you have any concerns about these differences? Be specific regarding the items and amounts that create any differences. What potential issue(s) do you see?

Consider and apply the fraud triangle. Define motivation, opportunity, and rationalization. From the information that you have gathered concerning Robert Norwalk, what do you speculate is his motivation, opportunity, and possible rationalization to perpetrate fraud?

Research embezzlement and larceny. How are they different from each other? Which problem appears to be present in this case? What can organizations do to prevent or minimize embezzlement and larceny?

What recommendations would you make to GCRA’s Board of Directors?

What are some reasons that small not-for-profit organizations are more susceptible to fraud than are other larger and/or for-profit organizations?

Are there any other issues to consider? If so, please discuss these.

Answer:

PSY315 – Fall 2021 Homework 3 For this assignment, you need to

PSY315 – Fall 2021

Homework 3

For this assignment, you need to find an original research paper, read it, and write up a response that describes the study, all the while connecting the content of the study to the content of the course/textbook. In reading your responses, we should we able to ascertain what the study was about (research question, how they answered the question, aka the method, and what the results are), and how it relates to what we talked about in class.

Your responses should be no more than 500 words. This isn’t a lot of words, which means you’ll need to think about how to be as clear and concise as possible to fit all the information you need in the length provided. Writing concisely can be a challenge, but it is a useful skill to develop!

The connections you make between your article and the class content should be meaningful, and not shallow. For example, saying “My article was about perceptual narrowing, and perceptual narrowing is something that we talked about in class” will not cut it. Here are some types of connections I could envision you making. Note: these are not all the possible types of connections you could make; also, the sentences I provide in parentheses are meant to be simplified templates for the types of arguments you could make, not actual sentence structures you should use in your responses:

Gaining more insight into something we learned in class (In class we learned that children X. My article argued that the reason children do X is because of Y.)

Contradicting something we learned in class (In class, we learned that children X because of Y. The article I read, however, argues instead that children X because of Z)

Extending knowledge from class to a new problem or domain (In class we learned that X children do Y. The article I read explored how this works with Z children). This may be a likely tactic for those interested in seeing how something we’ve learned about with monolingual children works in multilingual children (though the other ones would work for this too).

As mentioned previously, you should read an original research paper for your response. An original research paper is a primary source that describes an original research study. The paper you choose has to be recent (2010 or after). You cannot use a literature review, a meta-analysis, a knowledge translation paper (e.g., from journals such as The Conversation), a commentary or an opinion piece. The paper you choose must be taken from an academic research journal and must pertain to the topic of the course, i.e., Language Development or Acquisition. You can have your paper approved by the instructor via email if you want to be sure by sending a full reference and link to the paper.

The title of response should be the reference to the article you read (in APA format, 6th or 7th edition). This does not count towards the word limit. At the end of your response, on a separate line, indicate the word count (Word count: XXX). If you highlight your response in Microsoft Word, it will tell you the number of words in the bottom left.

I am available to assist you at any step of the process (finding/choosing an article, understanding the article, brainstorming how it connects to class, writing the response, etc.). Feel free to reach out to me at any time ([email protected]) or visit me in my office hours (Tuesday at 10:00 am).

The rubric on which you will be graded will be posted, so you’ll be able to see how you will be evaluated.

The assignment must be handed in through Quercus before 11:59pm on Sunday, December 5 as a word document.

Discussion: UTILITY/ELECTRIC BOX HUNT88 unread replies.88 replies.

Many cities have developed ways in which to encourage public art and beautify their cities and streets. Often, utility/electric boxes around town are painted and decorated. At times, the artwork can be breathtaking, or provide some mind opening social commentary. The styles in which many of these boxes are painted and decorated is vast.
Find A Decorated Utility/Electric Box:
Taking some inspiration from Dave Van Patten, take a photo of a decorated utility/electric box from around town that you feel is inspiring. A photo that shows you standing besides it is preferred, but not required. Be sure to also mention where the utility/electric box is located in your thread.
Be sure to embed your image/s (just like in the demo below). DO NOT attach the image/s in word doc or pdf files. Attached images that require downloading for viewing will NOT be looked at and the discussion will earn a zero.
Embedding Images Into Canvas Discussions (Links to an external site.)
Discussion Questions:
Tell us why you chose this utility/electric box.
What is it about the artwork that made an impression on you?
What do you feel makes it visually effective? Discussing a principle of design or two or anything from the visual toolbox could be helpful.
Tell us your interpretation of the imagery, including the theme you feel is covered.
Avoid going to Google for answers to the questions. Adding a little info from a source is OK, but I really want to hear your very own thoughts.
Your Discussion experience will come in three parts:
Part 1: Taking some inspiration from Dave Van Patten, take a photo of a decorated utility/electric box from around town that you feel is inspiring. A photo that shows you standing besides it is preferred, but not required. Be sure to also mention where the utility/electric box is located in your thread.
Embed the photo to your thread. Avoid using huge file sizes, they may not upload into Canvas.
Part 2: Write a short essay that answers the above questions and provide comments about your own viewing experience. Additions to your thread resulting from any added research is fine. But remember to stay on topic and answer the questions.
Part 3: Respond to a minimum of 2 other student Threads.
Points will be distributed in this manner:
Discussion- 20 max
Original and relevant content (5 points max)- Displaying you have studied and are knowledgeable of the material by addressing required prompts and writing your own thoughts and feelings regarding the material’s content.
A critical analysis (5 points max)- Exhibiting you have engaged with the material by address prompts directly by providing original, insightful observations and thought-provoking commentary- in both your post and classmate responses.
Engaging Responses (5 points max)- Engage in critical analysis of the content present in your classmate’s post. You are expected to provide insightful observations, thought-provoking commentary, or feedback to your classmates. Only responses that engage and encourage critical thinking will receive maximum credit.
Quality of writing (5 points max)- Cleary and concisely articulates ideas and feelings about the material utilizing good sentence fluency (syntax), spelling, and grammar. College-level writing is required.
**Note-many of the rubric’s requirements overlaps, applying to both your post and response.
*The purpose of this exercise is to promote critical thinking. Be sure to provide detailed and supportive answers. One-word answers like “cool, awesome, lol” are not sufficient. You will be graded on the quality of your posts and responses. Failure to respond to at least 2 posts will cost you points. Be mindful and polite to one another, and more importantly, be creative and have fun.

Writing Question

Research Paper:
Length: 1800 words (plus or minus about 100 words. Word count does not include bibliography or works cited pages)
Write a 1800-word (approximately 6-7 pages) paper which develops the topic you proposed in your research proposal and begins to answer one or more of the questions you proposed inquiring into. There are two options for writing this paper: 1. The paper can be in the genre of a “review article;” that is, it makes a claim about the available scholarship on your
chosen topic. 2. The paper can analyze a primary source, such as a Shakespeare play, movie, illustration, or historical speech referencing Shakespeare, theatre review, etc., related to your project; your analysis should be in conversation with the work on similar subjects done by other scholars. The paper should take the argumentative form of a single, focused argument, which develops an evolving thesis from the introduction to the conclusion and makes use of appropriate evidence (such as quotations) to support the argument.
It should be cited using an academic style appropriate to the topic and should include a bibliography or works cited page, which should include a minimum of five academic 5 sources (scholarly books or articles: at least 1 monograph and at least 4 articles are needed, though you are welcome to add sources beyond what you used in the Annotated Bibliography. See the description under “Annotated Bibliography” for more detail). Additional sources can include additional academic sources, or, if it is appropriate for your research, one or two primary sources, such as literary texts, historical documents, or media such as films. The research paper should include the major elements of
academic writing we’ve learned this term, especially the knowledge deficit and state of knowledge; it may make use of as many of the discursive academic features as you find useful.
The research paper should be carefully edited and polished, making it as free of formatting and mechanical errors as you can make it before turning it in. An excellent paper will include very clear, even elegant prose which showcase your ideas and how they have developed.
The research paper is the culmination of your work this term; take time to enjoy the opportunity to explore a topic of your choice and to present your work as cleanly, clearly, and sharply as possible.

Facility Impact on Inmates

Complete the table below by replacing the bracketed text with your responses. In each row, select a facility type and a population, and under “Impact,” in 100 to 150 words, explore the impact of the facility type on the inmate population you selected in that row. Be sure to cite any references in APA style.

Type of Facility/ Architectural Design

Inmate Population

Impact

Example: Telephone Pole Design

Example: Elderly

Example:

Telephone pole design institutions have several wings that are connected by a central corridor. These designs can have a physical impact on elderly inmates. Older inmates may struggle getting around the long corridors typically present in these designs. Gaining access to medicine and services can be problematic. These institutions can also have a psychological impact on elderly inmates. Older inmates may feel the stress of being placed with younger inmates. They may feel more vulnerable to being attacked. There could be a sense of social isolation. And, further stress could be felt due to the inability of staff being able to gain control of a corridor in the event of a riot (Siegel & Bartollas, 2018). Further, this design could affect inmate/officer relationships. This type of style creates a distant relationship between officers and inmates. As a result, officers may not realize the unique needs of the elderly inmates and may have the same expectations of them as they do of the younger inmates.
