Instructions
Approach the journal activities as (a) an opportunity to reflect upon and apply what you learn each week based on the assigned readings, discussions, and activities, and (b) an opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise based on your educational and professional experiences in the past.
Write about a child with special needs or suspected needs that you know. You may also choose to write about what you have observed in yourself as a child that might be considered an emotional or learning challenge.
Reflect upon your observations of the child. What are the potential developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges for this child? What interventions may be helpful in overcoming this challenge? Explain.
Here is the child I want to address for assignment:
An 11-year-old girl has moved to an entirely new school with more advanced academics. She has not been diagnosed with ADHD but has focus issues. She needs accommodations to keep focused on her tasks such as a longer time to complete work as well as reminders to remain on task. She has shown herself to be able to understand tasks and she is also open and receptive to redirection. Socially she is doing well, she makes friends in any surroundings, and she interacts well with older children and even adults because she is advanced in her speech. In this child, it is important to monitor temperament because it can indicate what kind of day she had or is having regarding academics. She does not have behavioral issues and transitions well. Also, to note, she is currently in occupational therapy, in school and after reading group classes to help with reading due to low percentage in reading level, she has done vision therapy and also cheerleading.
